CASE1

Acute gastroenteritis

 Aethusa cynapium

 - Boy, 8 months

 - Now this child is doing well, but one day before I trembled because it was lying there, didn't move, the eyes deep in the head, the cheeks a little bit sunken, rather pale, with a hippocratic face.

 - When I saw the child immediately I saw that the child was very dehydrated and we had to give him absolutely the right remedy.

 - The parents have been in the Centre a few times already, but apparently without result.

 - A : Yesterday I saw the child in an acute state.

 - Tell me, how was it yesterday?

 - MP : He had gastroenteritis and yesterday he didn't want to drink anymore.

 - A : He didn't want to drink anymore?

 - MP : No., He only wanted to lie down and to be left alone.

 - At the beginning of the disease I had been seen by a colleague and he gave him a tablet, I don't know which, and afterwards he started drinking again, but not eating yet.

 - Then it remained about the same.

 - The fever was 38, 39o, the whole day through he had the same temperature.

 - It didn't come down.

 - He didn't want to take anything at all.

 - When I gave him something he vomited it immediately.

 - A : When you gave him something?

 - MP : Yes, his porridge, his soya milk with rice.

 - A : He vomited it immediately?

 - MP : Yes, it came out by his nose.

 - A : And how did it look?

 - MP : The first days it was not digested.

 - It was just the milk which came out again.

 - It was as if it hasn't been in the stomach at all.

 - It came out the way it went in.

 - A : How did the milk look?

 - MP : It looked just the same way as in the bottle, only there was mucus with it.

 - Then I came back with him the next day.

 - I got another remedy for him.

 - He still didn't want to eat yet, but then he drank some tea.

 - He didn't have to vomit from drinking tea, but he vomited the milk immediately.

 - A : How did the milk look?

 - MP : It was curdled milk, so sour.

 - A : Yesterday the situation of the child was really serious.

 - He was sleepy, had deep sunken eyes, he didn't want to drink anything, always had diarrhoea.

 - He had a very particular kind of stool.

 - MP : The second day when he became ill again his stool was very thin, watery and with mucus and it smelled very badly.

 - A : Yesterday the stool was green?

 - MP : Yes, I saw it, it looked like spinach.

 - A : It stank very much and it was green like spinach.

 - MP : But it didn't run out of his pants, it was not so thin anymore, but more solid.

 - Today he also had stool, but today it was more yellow.

 - A : Yesterday the child still had fever, didn't he?

 - MP : Yes, 38.4oC.

 - A : And he had such a sunken face.

 - How was the weeping? Tell me again!

 - MP : He was moaning the whole day.

 - In his sleep suddenly he was screaming loudly and afterwards he started moaning, probably because of cramps in the abdomen or something like that.

 - I don't know.

 - Now he is laughing again.

 - A : Do you think that the child was cutting teeth?

 - MP : Yes, I think so.

 - A : Then you told me that he had aphthae in his mouth.

 - MP : Yes, I examined him and at the side of the tongue there was an aphthae.

 - A : Yesterday it was really frightening and your husband said that you had to go to the hospital.

 - MP : Yes, he said that when it doesn't improve he wanted to go with him to the hospital, because he was afraid that he would dehydrate.

 - A : Yes, that's right.

 - Yesterday he got a remedy in M potency.

 - How did you give it to him?

 - MP : I dissolved it and every time when he was thirsty I gave him a little bit of it.

 - I put water in his bottle and when he was thirsty I gave him some.

 - I paid attention that he didn't eat anything in between.

 - Then I had him drink some of his bottle until the thirst was quenched.

 - A : How long did it take before he became better?

 - MP : Yesterday evening I gave him some of the dissolution and three, four hours after the remedy he became really hungry.

 - It was three, four hours after the remedy.

 - Then I made him some soya milk.

 - He didn't want it, he had an aversion to it.

 - Then my mother said, try to give him something else.

 - A : In fact he didn't want the soya milk?

 - MP : No, he didn't want it at all.

 - Then I just gave him plain milk and he drank it.

 - I put some sugar in it.

 - He drank 30 g of it and he didn't vomit it.

 - In the evening before he went to bed he was moaning again and wanted to eat something.

 - My husband gave him something to eat.

 - He vomitted very little of it and the rest stayed inside.

 - A : How did the vomit look?

 - MP : It was very strongly curdled.

 - A : How was it at night?

 - MP : He slept the whole night through, didn't moan.

 - He woke up this morning at 7 : 00 o'clock, and was hungry again.

 - First I gave him something of the dissolution.

 - He drank it completely.

 - There was still 40 g in it.

 - One hour later I gave him his milk and he drank 120 g of the plain milk with sugar and didn't vomit anything.

 - A : How is the fever?

 - MP : He doesn't have fever anymore.

 - The stool is still a little bit soft, but it is not diarrhoea anymore.

 - A : Is it still green?

 - MP : No, it is more yellow.

 - A : The child is active again?

 - MP : Yes, he is playing again.

 - A : I have to tell you something which is important, it is warm, it is summer and it is 37oC.

 - I really think he is better now.

 - You don't have to go to the hospital anymore.

 - MP : No, it is not necessary anymore.

 - Normally this is a child for the hospital, a child which has to be fed intravenously.

 - All right, let's see why this child is so ill.

 - It is because of the warm weather and the dentition.

 - These two things cause the situation.

 - And where can we find this? In which rubric?

 - Answer : "..."(not understandable)

 - A : "Diarrhoea, dentition, during" on page 612, this is a very big rubric, and "diarrhoea, hot weather", and now we need our computer.

dentition, during : Acon., aeth., apis., arg-n., ars., bell., benz-ac., bor., calc-p., Calc., canth., carb-v., Cham., chin., cina., coff., colch., coloc.,corn., cupr., Dulc., ferr-ar., Ferr., gels., graph., hell., hep., ign., ip., kreos., mag-c., merc., nux-m., ph-ac., podo., psor., Rheum., sep., Sil., sul-ac.,sulph., zinc.

hot weather : Acon., aeth., aloe., ant-c., ars., bapt., bell., Bry., calc., Camph., carb-v., chin-a., Chin., coff., colch., crot-h., Crot-t., cupr-ar.,cupr., ferr., Gamb., hyper., iod., ip., iris., jatr., kali-bi., lach., mag-c., merc., mez., mur-ac., nat-m., nat-p., Nux-m., Olnd., ph-ac., phos., Podo.,psor., rheum., sec., sul-ac., verat.

 - The causations are the dentition and the warm weather, but there is another peculiarity, and that is the aversion to milk.

 - He didn't want to drink his milk, he only wanted tea.

 - "Stomach, aversion, milk" on page 481.

milk : Aeth., am-c., ant-t., arn., bell., bry., calad., calc-s., calc., carb-s., carb-v., cina., ferr-p., guai., guare., ign., Lac-d., lec., mag-c., Nat-c., nat-p., nat-s., nux-v., phos., puls., rheum., sep., sil., stann., sulph.

 - Remark : "The rubric concerns real milk, and the soya milk is not real milk."

 - A : No, it is milk.

 - Remark : "No, soya is a vegetable product and milk an animal product.

 - Therefore..."

 - A : What is soya milk? Is it not milk?

 - Remark : "No, it is soya."

 - A : Don't think too complicated, take it as milk.

 - The child is vomiting his milk, but not his tea.

 - This is remarkable enough, this means there is a difference between milk and tea.

 - Remark : "It is also important to remark that the child before it became ill, didn't drink milk and didn't like milk.

 - That's why he got soya milk."

 - A : Aha, so an aversion milk.

 - Another symptom is the vomiting of the milk, "stomach, vomiting, milk, after" on page 534, in

milk, after : Aeth., ant-c., ant-t., ars-i., ars., atro., bar-c., bell., calc., carb-v., iod., iris., kali-bi., lach., mag-c., merc-c., merc-d., morph., ph-ac.,phos., podo., samb., sanic., sep., Sil., spong., sulph., Valer., vip.

the rubric there are three capital remedies; and then "vomiting, milk, curdled" on page 538.

curdled : Aeth., ant-c., ant-t., Calc., merc-c., nat-m., nat-p., sabin., Sil., sul-ac., sulph., Valer.

 - Everybody knows the remedy.

 - If you see these children, you might get an anxiety, because the eyes are so deep in the head and the cheeks are really fallen in.

 - Because of the vomiting and the diarrhoea they dehydrated very quickly.

 - In the rubric "face, hippocratic " on page 378 there are eight capital remedies and in the rubric

HIPPOCRATIC (See Sunken) : Acon., Aeth., agar., am-c., ant-c., Ant-t., Ars., asc-t., camph., canth., carb-h., Carb-v., Chin., chlor., cic., colch.,cupr., dig., ferr-ar., ferr-i., ferr-p., ferr., iod., kali-bi., kali-n., lach., lyc., merc-c., merc., mez., nux-m., op., ox-ac., ph-ac., phos., phyt., plb., rhus-v., Sec., stann., staph., stry., sul-ac., Tab., Verat., vip., zinc.

"diarrhoea, green, dentition, during" -no, the remedy is not there.

 - Remark : "But it is in Boericke.

 - A : Aha, it is in Boericke.

 - Good.

 - And then the aphthae, aphthae are also very important in this remedy.

 - And strange enough the aphthae are at the side of the tongue just like in Syphilinum, but in this remedy at both sides, not only at one side like in Syphilinum.

 - Which remedy did we give?

 - Answer : "Aethusa."

 - A : Aethusa 10M or M, I don't know, and one day later the child was healthy again.

 - Before it was already twice in the Centre and got some remedies, I don't know which - but without result.

 - Think of this remedy in children in the summer and during dentition, with vomiting and diarrhoea.

Do you know which remedy likes animals most? More than people? Someone who loves animals more after they have learned to know people?

Aethusa. And which is the first question you have to ask when you think of Aethusa? Aethusa is a constitutional remedy, so that there already may have been symptoms during childhood.

 Audience: Vomiting milk.

A : Yes, vomiting milk. And what is this vomiting like? What is the milk like they vomit?

 Audience: Like cheese.

A : Curdled, the milk is curdled.

We had patients in the Center for whom we couldn't find the remedy by repertorisation. All the anxieties of Aethusa are not in the Repertory. The essence is that they love animals excessively. They have three, four cats and two, three dogs and they buy them good food to eat, instead of buying good things for their partner or themselves. Their refrigerator is full of cat and dog food. These people have been very much disappointed in their life.
