This man assisted me when I worked as a surgeon in Zaire. We worked together, experienced many difficult and dangerous situations and we liked each other very much. He often had malaria, a nephritis, arthritis and things like that. His parents both had tuberculosis and died of cancer

In such cases you have to observe very well. Every symptom they tell is important because in very acute cases the important symptoms are told right from the beginning

He says that he has fever every two days and it starts with tremendous chilliness. So, there is a very strong chilliness and a periodicity. It is a periodicity of 2 days with a strong coldness of the hands and he feels the coldness as if it is in his bones

Where can we find that the attacks of malaria, this chilliness comes every two days

In the rubric "periodicity" under "chill". "Chill, periodicity, regular and distinct" (p. 1269). There we see remedies like Aranea diadema, Bovista, Cactus, Capsicum, Cedron, also Natrum sulphuricum is an important malaria remedy. Because we know that this is malaria, we can be sure we have to look which of these remedies is a malaria remedy. Aranea diadema, Cedron, China sulphuricum and Natrum sulphuricum we know in malaria.

The second symptom he says is that he is very cold and that he has the feeling as if the coldness is in his bones. We find this in the generalities in the rubric "cold, as if in the bones" (p. 1350). This is exactly what he says, so we have to take this as a symptom. Aranea is there, Arsenicum, Calcarea and others

P: No, but yesterday I had pain.

He says that his spleen has enlarged, because his wife felt the swollen spleen. Where can we find this, "swelling or enlargement of the spleen?" "Abdomen, swelling, spleen" (p. 603) and "abdomen, enlarged, spleen" (p. 547). Here, some remedies have to be added, which I will tell you later

In the rubric "enlargement of the spleen" there are malaria remedies, first China. China is one of the most important malaria remedies

In Zaire where I worked as a male nurse one day a sister came to our hospital to be operated on hysterectomy. A: No, it is not said it is a hardening, it is said it is cancer. You have to see under pancreas, "pancreas, affections" (p. 599), and then you have to differentiate those remedies. Which of these remedies has affections of the glands? Conium. If you have tumors of the pancreas, and the pancreas is a gland, also the mammae, the testicle and so on, then the first remedy you have to think of is Conium

So, China would be a possibility and also Aranea. But we can not give China, because it has not the chill in the bones and this symptom was so clear that this remedy has to cover this symptom

A: Is the spleen swollen during or after the fever?

P: After the fever.

A: It concerns periodical malaria attacks. Is the liver normal?

P: I don't have pain there.

A: Are you also confused in the head like before with the encephalitis?

P: Not so strong.

Before the malaria attack he came once again after the Baptisia encephalitis, because he started to have a bad taste in the mouth, a kind of confusion about who he really was, the flatus was smelling very terrible, and therefore I repeated Baptisia and he became healthy again. Baptisia is not only indicated in fever situations, but also in situations without fever. After the second Baptisia he got a malaria attack and another doctor gave him again Baptisia, because it cured him before and because Baptisia is a malaria remedy. But this time it did nothing

P: No, but I am enormously concerned that I can't perform my duties.

Baptisia did not do anything in this case, it didn't give the expected effect. Indeed, it is better but it comes back. That is not the right remedy. We have to give something especially for the malaria.

At this moment I have two remarkable symptoms: the chill that comes back at the same time and the coldness in the bones. Only one of the three remedies with the regularly returning chill also has the coldness in the bones, and that is Aranea diadema

Then, I take my Boericke and see if the picture that the patient gives corresponds to that what is written in Boericke. Boericke writes about Aranea diadema the following: "All symptoms of Aranea are characterized by periodicity, and coldness, and great susceptibility to dampness. It is the remedy for the constitution favorable to malarial poisoning, where every damp day or place favors chilliness..." - that is the case here - "Patient feels cold to the very bones. Coldness not relieved by anything. Feeling as if parts were enlarged and heavier." He said that he has the feeling as if his hand was larger, a kind of itching, numbness in his hand..

Then: "Abdomen - enlarged spleen. Colic returns same hours...

Then: "Fever - Coldness, with pain in long bones, and feeling of stone in abdomen at the same hour daily. Chilly day and night...

He said that it comes every two days, it is the malaria tertiana. Look in the Repertory under "chill, periodicity, clock-like" (p. 1269). There are three remedies: Aranea diadema, Cactus and Cedron

He was very, very cold and said that he would die. Then, I gave him Aconitum 10M and ten minutes later he felt completely quietly, so pathetic as if floating in the air

You see, we homoeopaths have to work day and night, but by working at night you can recognize certain remedies, for example also the remedy which has the apoplexy at 3 o'clock at night. Which is the remedy? These people have fear for an attack during headache and they look like Belladonna. It is a remedy especially for brain-strokes and brain-tumors, also tumors in the breast. It is Asterias rubens. You can only recognize Asterias rubens when the patient calls you at night and says he has fear to get an attack. I had such a case. The patient had a hypertension of more than 20 to 15 Pa. I did not know what I should do. I could have given her Valium, but then I went home, looked in my Repertory and there it said, "Fear to get an attack at night." Then, I took Clarke, read the remedy and it was clear to me that it was Asterias rubens. I gave her the remedy and the next day she had a blood pressure of 15 to 9 Pa

The first attack he got at 4.00 p.m. After the first attack he got Baptisia first, by which the attack seemingly was pushed to 7.00 o'clock every two days. Apparently, Baptisia gave him the energy to develop a clearer symptomatology

Under the time of the chill we see at 6.00 p.m. : Cedron; at 7.00 p.m. : Cedron (p. 1274), Aranea is not there. And he said that it was once at 6.00 o'clock and once at 7.00 o'clock

P: The first attack was during the night of December, 23 to 24 between 2 and 3 o'clock. The second attack on December, 25 about 7.00 p.m. and then every two days, on December, 27, 29 and yesterday, on December, 31 at 7.00 p.m.

A: That night I was with you. So very clear periodicity, every two days, exactly the same hour. Then, it started with very strong feverish chills. We know that these are attacks of malaria, because your spleen was swollen between the attacks. Not during the attacks, but between the attacks. That is a logic appearance because of the demolition of the blood cells. So, surely malaria.

Now, I am theorizing. He said that the spleen was swollen between the attacks. You know what happens in malaria? The plasmodia are in the liver. They are wandering in the red blood cells and at a certain moment the red blood cells are bursting and the plasmodia come freely into the blood. At that moment there is a fever. The rest of the red blood cells will be destroyed in the spleen. Because of this allopathic way of thinking it is normal that the spleen is enlarged and therefore I did not take this as a symptom, but later you would see that I should have taken it

Everyone of us likes to explain everything and so do I, and every one sees that I know malaria. But I was wrong what I told you

Which remedy did I give him

Cedron. If we read in Boericke, we see, "Periodicity is the most marked characteristic of this drug. Is particularly useful in tropical or in damp, warm, marshy countries. It has been found curative in malarial affections, especially neuralgia. Adapted to persons of a voluptuous disposition, excitable, nervous temperament. You know that with most people who have taken QUININE for quite a long time the hearing is less and they get noises in the ear. Cedron is an antidote

"The whole body seems numb with headache". With him not the whole body was numb, but he did not feel one hand while having headache. Which remedy do we know in numbness with headache? One is Chamomilla. The head is numb, or the hand. A second remedy is Natrum muriaticum and a third one is Sepia. It is not in the Repertory, but we have often seen it in practice

Here you see Cedron, Arnica, China, China sulphuricum, Eucalyptus is also a malaria remedy, also Ipecacuanha, Natrum muriaticum, Natrum sulphuricum, Psorinum also, especially in poor countries. In the World Wars there were very much Psorinum cases. Because of shortage of food and a shortage of money a mental picture of Psorinum was developed: the anxiety for poverty. They need, they need, "I have not enough of this, I have not enough of that and so on." They have suicidal tendencies and are very depressed

A: The liver was also slightly swollen. But important were the pains in the spleen. On January, 5 I gave you the next remedy. Two days later you called me. When would you normally have had the next attack?

P: On Saturday.

A: Well yes, anyway, after the last remedy you still had an attack twice. That was at 1 o'clock at night and two days later about the morning. That was an attack without chill and less strong as previously, although you still felt very miserable. When was the last attack?

P: About a week ago. Normally, I would have had two attacks, but they didn't come through.

A: So since one week no attack anymore. What about the spleen?

P: Yesterday, it was still a little bit swollen, but not now anymore.

A: What about the pain? It already disappeared before?

P: The real pains were disappeared, but the swollen feeling only disappeared now. Now, I can lie on my left side again. Indeed, I mostly sleep on the right side, but when I wake up I lie on the left side. It was also typical that my cushion felt hard.

A: That was typical before, although the remedy is not in the rubric. How do you feel the last two days?

P: I feel much better, but in the morning I still have headache, especially around the eyes. I don't feel miserable, I eat normal.

If you read in Boericke this remedy seems to possess a specific relation to the spleen. "Ake cake of malaria." "Ake cake" means "liver- and spleen enlargement together with cold chill." "A left-sided remedy generally. Anaemic patients where liver and spleen are at fault." Swelling of the spleen and the liver in anaemia makes us think of which disease? Of leukemia. Ceanothus has to be added here

"Chronic bronchitis with profuse secretion." Under "abdomen" you find: "Enormous enlargement of the spleen. Splenitis; pain all up the left side. Deep-seated pain in left hypochondrium, hypertrophy of spleen. Leucaemia. Violent dyspnoea. Menses profuse, and yellow weakening leucorrhoea. Unable to lie on left side." That is what Boericke writes, but he does not write anything about malaria

Then we look in Clarke. He writes everything what the patient said, "Fears he will become unfit for work. Great nervous excitement with chilliness and loss of appetite." He thinks he has to do all this because he has the feeling that he will not be able to perform it afterwards. This is what he said. We took this as excitement before chill: Cedron. But if you listen carefully he said that he has to perform this and that and that is what the prooving of Ceanothus gave us

Then under "fever": "Intermittens with splenic enlargement." What does "intermittens" mean? It means, that the spleen is swollen between the attacks of chill and fever. That is what he told us, that his spleen was swollen between the attacks and again that is Ceanothus

Besides, in Ceanothus you also find that the urine contains bile. It is not in the rubric "urine, bile containing" (p. 681). Here it has to be added

In this rubric we see another remedy: Chionanthus. Because of which disease is there bile in the urine? Because of the obstruction of the gall-bladder by stones. One remedy is important together with enlarged spleen, and that is Chionanthus. Do not forget this remedy in acute obstruction of the gall-bladder by stones, when the patient has dark urine, even when the urine is green. Ceanothus is a very important remedy in serious attacks of malaria, in black water fever and also yellow-fever, in dangerous, deadly diseases

Which remedy can also be considered in yellow fever? Yellow fever with petechiae, bleedings

Crotalus horridus. Crotalus horridus is a very malignant, very destructive, deadly remedy like all the snakes

A: That is difficult to say. Maybe he would be cured right from the start if I would have given him Ceanothus as a first remedy, because he could not sleep on the left side from the beginning, the spleen was swollen between the attacks and the mental picture was there. Pulsatilla has wandering pain, Tuberculinum has wandering pain and also Syphilinum, all the three remedies have this symptom. With Pulsatilla you will touch the case, but there will be a relapse. Then you give Tuberculinum and some are cured with this remedy, but other people will have a relapse, they get Tuberculinum again, and again and again. Then, you discover that the father was an alcoholic, a keratitis (Keratitis is the medical term for inflammation of the cornea), excoriation between the toes, cracks in the toes, there are so many symptoms of Syphilinum, you give Syphilinum and then it is all right

I just treated a child with very heavy asthma. It reacted very well to Tuberculinum, then a relapse, again Tuberculinum, nothing, no reaction. His appearance reminded me very strongly of Carcinosinum, besides there was cancer in the family. So I gave Carcinosinum and since one year there is no problem anymore. In this patient Carcinosinum and Tuberculinum will appear if the upper layers which have been caused by the long suppression of malaria of NIVAQUIN are cured

A few months ago independent doctors of Tansania made a study about malaria. Most of the studies are done by pharmaceutic industries and the results of the studies are always that their medicines are the best and you have to take those. The examination about the measles was the worst that has ever been made and on account of the results every child is vaccinated against measles. That is the most stupid thing you can do, because the measles is a skin disease, a psoric disease and which is suppressed by the vaccination. We will see how many people will be paralyzed in the future, how many people will get leukemia, cancer and so on

Also in prophylaxis of malaria you see that many people come back with deafness, roaring in the ears, liver problems, and many people die of cancer. People who have been in the south for 20, 25 years, they blame the sun for it. But that is nonsense. The sun cannot do so much harm, you should not blame the sun

This group of independent doctors studied the effect of the chemical prophylaxis of malaria and the use of a plain mosquito net. By this examination they found out that the anopheles mosquito is only picking at a certain hour. I am not completely sure, but I think it was between the evening and 11.00 o'clock at night. The only sensible prevention is to sleep with a mosquito net. It is no problem during the day and after midnight, the anopheles mosquito is picking only a few hours. Maybe, there are other mosquitoes which are picking at other hours, but the anopheles mosquito which transmits malaria only picks in the evening and just before midnight

Second, I do not believe certain homoeopaths who say that you have to take Natrum muriaticum as a prophylaxis of malaria. That is nonsense. How can someone who is Calcarea constitutionally need Natrum muriaticum? Or does he have grief when he goes to the tropics? Yes, maybe he has homesickness, Natrum muriaticum is two and maybe you can get malaria because of homesickness - I do not know. I do not believe in this prophylaxis. In Homoeopathy you give the remedy on the basis of symptoms you see and how can you know in advance which symptoms are developed? Nobody can, that is impossible. There is an exception, you also find it in Hahnemann, and indeed with epidemics. If you find many people with exactly the same symptoms - and this exists, we know it of Eupatorium perfoliatum epidemics and of scarlantina epidemics, then you can give those people who are not ill yet, for example, Belladonna or Eupatorium perfoliatum, because probably they risk to have the same symptoms. But there are no epidemics of malaria, malaria is an endemic disease

A: Yes, maybe, but we do not know exactly. Anyhow, we have examples in the books from epidemic influenzas that have been cured with Eupatorium perfoliatum and examples of other epidemics that have been cured with Belladonna. There is no doubt about it. But in these cases all the patients had exactly the same symptoms.

We also see it in our centre, there are Bryonia periods, where many patients come with Bryonia symptoms, there are Baptisia periods, Rhus toxicodendron periods. In September/October you often see Dulcamara and so on.

The symptoms are decisively, the clear appearance of the same symptoms in several people, and nothing else

Maybe, in the meantime I have become such a bad person, that I don't get any diseases anymore, but there are so many other people who never took NIVAQUIN and did not get malaria

I depends on you, not on the plasmodia, it is you; it is not the streptococci or the staphylococci, it is you. Forget these animals as the cause of the diseases, it is not they, but it is because of us that we are ill, your resistance, your susceptibility

If you want to put the responsibility on the shoulders of some one else then you give NIVAQUIN, but if you like your patients, then you do not give NIVAQUIN, then you tell them to buy a mosquito net

A: No, it has no sense to force constitution if there are no problems. If you feel well and the others do not think you are crazy then you do not take a remedy, but only when you have symptoms. If you have complaints, then the remedy gives you force, but if you do not have complaints why should you take a remedy? It has no sense

Now, the children are vaccinated there and I also have vaccinated at least 100,OOO children against measles, one after the other, always with the same needle. At that time I did not know better. After the vaccinations the children did not die anymore, but I do not know if it was good to do so. I think it would be better to give them work and food, so that they can build their own resistance. We cannot take so many people, because we do not have enough homoeopathic doctors. If you say something on television or in the papers, how good Homoeopathy is - yes, it is true, but who will do the work? It is beautiful to see an aeroplane flying, but if you or I try to fly, we will fall down. It is the same with Homoeopathy. Homoeopathy works, but the man who is doing Homoeopathy has to be formed.

Because of these reasons I gave him Aranea, Aranea M. Then, I let him lie down for half an hour and saw again how his headache was, because the headache were the most important under which he has suffered.
