You can observe black hair, paleness, swelling under the eyes and she is dressed very well.

All kinds of fears: fear of high places, fear in narrow places, fear of birds, fear of animals, fear of spiders, fear of the future, all kinds of fears. That is Calcarea.

Very important "fear of insanity" (S. 46), "delusion that she will become insane" (p. 28) and typical for Calcarea "delusion, insane, that people think her" (p. 28).

Calcarea phosphorica needs constantly something else, they are not happy when they are in Lourdes for three days.

It might happen that these children are sitting immovable and doing nothing when you put them somewhere. You find this in the rubric on page 38:

You may misinterpret this and prescribe Baryta carbonica. Baryta carbonica also learns to walk late and if you put them somewhere they also sit immovable, but the difference with Calcarea phosphorica is that Calcarea phosphorica are very obstinate and Baryta carbonica are not. If Calcarea phosphorica wants something they cry and cry and you can't calm them down. Especially during dentition they are very obstinate and cry a lot.

She becomes nauseous while riding in a car, she doesn't like to dance very much, instead she prefers to read. She prefers to sit rather than play some sports.  She is a typical Carcinosinum girl. Another point which indicates Carcinosinum is that her great-grandfather died of cancer.

Her appearance resembles that of Sepia officinalis a lot, but in a different way, more like a gypsy. The behavior of a gypsy is very typical for Carcinosinum. They like to travel, they like music and then let themselves be suppressed. They settle down in a place, they are chased away, go to another place, are chased away again and so on. They don't fight. This is the typical Carcinosinum mentality.

 When you have a patient who has the appearance of Sepia officinalis it might be Carcinosinum. There are also blond Carcinosinum patients, but in most cases they have a dark appearance.

 Another desire is meat and fat, fat meat, bacon. That is important, for example in children, they like to eat fat bacon. You give Tuberculinum or Calcarea phosphorica, but there is also Carcinosinum.

 If they are suppressed as a child, if they have a dictatorial father or mother, they can not show their feelings because they are so sensitive.

 But if a child is reading real books, no comic strips or adventures, but all kinds of books, then think of Carcinosinum. Like this child, and we have seen it several times, even in summer during the holidays, they are sitting in the sun or under the tree and they are reading books the whole day, the whole week.

 It is important to notice that most Carcinosinum patients are not fat people, they are rather thin people, although they eat a lot. You can think of Tuberculinum and so on, but also of Carcinosinum. They eat quite a lot of fat things and they are thin. First, I thought Carcinosinum people were people who liked to do some sport, but now I have other ideas concerning that matter. I do not think they like sport. They do not like sport, they like to read, to listen music and dance, but not pursuing sports. 

Besides Sepia officinalis has a desire for sour things, often an aversion to fat. As far as the desires are concerned the differential diagnosis between Sepia officinalis and Carcinosinum is not easy, because often both have the same appearance. But Carcinosinum has a real strong desire for fat, while Sepia officinalis rather has an aversion and a desire for ice cream is stronger in Carcinosinum than in Sepia officinalis.

 MP : My husband never bothered about him. When my son wanted to help his father he started shouting at him, "You are a dummy, you don't known anything about it". Also when something went wrong in school he always said, "I was the first of the class and you don't know anything, and you are lazy"...and things like that. He was always criticizing him. Although the boy wanted to help in his own way, but he could never do things right for my husband.

D : How did he react in that situation?

MP : My son went away, he started crying, he sat somewhere all alone, reading a book, a watching television, he closes himself.

 I as having a quick look at him during the consultation. He had this beautiful café au lait discoloration in his neck. It gave me a kick. Then I heard about the chocolate, the soup, the desires and I became more and more convinced that Carcinosinum was definitely to be considered.

I got more excited as the consultation went on. At the end I inquired if there was anything wrong in the family. And I assure you there was. His mother's mother has diabetes, her sister died from cancer. A niece of his father had tuberculosis. There was tuberculosis and cancer all over the family.

The outstanding point which leads to the consideration of Eupatorium is the degree of pain which the patients have. There are very intense pains all over - of an aching character - which seem to involve all the bones of the skeleton, arms, legs, shoulders, back, hips and, particularly, the shin bones. As a rule, Eupatorium influenzas develop rather more quickly than others, and the pains develop very rapidly. The patients say it feels as if the various joints were being dislocated - it is that type of very intense, deep-seated pain. Associated with the pain, there is incessant restlessness; the patients are always moving to try to ease the aching pain in one or other of their bones. In Eupatorium influenzas - a useful differentiation, point - the sweat is very scanty. Other drugs which have a very similar degree of bone aching all tend to sweat. The patients are always depressed, but with a different depression from that of Bryonia. They are acutely depressed and definitely complaining; they complain bitterly about the intensity of their pain and, if they are not complaining, they move around in bed, groaning and moaning; and are very sorry for themselves.

                                                        In appearance, they usually have a fairly bright flush and a dryish skin, with rather pale lips, in contrast to the deep congested appearance in the other drugs already described. They tend to have a white-coated, ticklish fur on the tongue and, instead of the bitter taste of Bryonia, they simply have a flat, insipid taste. Eupatorium patients are always chilly; they feel cold and shivery, are sensitive to any draught of air and very often have a sensation of chilliness spreading up the back. They usually suffer from quite intense headaches. Typically,

they complain of extreme soreness of the head, very often most marked in the part that is resting against the pillow. There is one exception to this : they complain of extreme soreness in the forehead, where there is no pressure at all, and a sensation of pulsation in the occipital region, accompanied by a feeling of intense heat on the top of the head. They sometimes have a strange surging feeling in the head and, oddly, the surging seems to go from side to side across the top of the head. Coryza in Eupatorium is rather distinctive. The patient has a feeling of intense obstruction - as if the the nose is completely stopped up- and this is accompanied by most fluent discharge with violent and incessant sneezing. With this coryza there is always marked involvement of the the eyes. The margins of the lids look red and inflamed, there is intense lachrymation and a feeling of generalized soreness. They look congested; and there is some degree of photophobia, but not very marked.Eupatorium patients sometimes develop and extreme hyperaethesia to smells of any kind. Any odour induces a sense of irritation, aggravates the the coryza and, very often, makes them feel sick.

                    They suffer from an intensely dry throat, which is just generally congested. With it they are very thirsty, with a desire for icecold drinks. I remember a Eupatorium patient whose one desire was for ice-cream. He did not swallow it but held it in his mouth to cool the burning at the back of this throat. Care must be taken, however : if Eupatorium patients have too much ice water, ice-cream or cold drinks, they are very prone to gastric attacks. Liable to a good deal of eructation of wind anyway; irritation of cold fluids in the stomach may cause a definite bilious vomit. The catarrhal condition usually avoids the larynx, but the patients complain of intense heat and burning in the trachea. This is accompanied by a very trying cough, which again is accompanied by intense soreness in the chest walls. There are intense aching pains all through the chest muscles, pains which feel as though they are actually in the ribs.

The Eupatorium cough is very violent, with scanty sputum, and it seems to hurt the patients from head to toe. It makes their head burst and increases the chest pains, so that they try to restrain the cough or control the chest movement, even while they are coughing, because of the pain. It is a generalized aching pain - as if they were being broken; not the sharp, stabbing pain of Bryonia, which is equally as sensitive.

 - They are not so sensitive to injustices and for them the society and its functions are not so important.

 - Hepar seems to be much more egoistic.

 - Hepar has a Calcarea element and Calcarea is known for its egoism.

 - Hepar wants to have the way he imagines and he wants to feel good with it.

 - The slightest thing which comes into play, which disturbs their life they have an outburst.

 - He says, "They can make me angry nine times, but the tenth time I could kill him.

 - " This could also be Lachesis, but we rather see it in Mercurius. something doesn't fit him, he is grumbling internally the first time, a little bit more the second time and then the anger comes out.

 - Hepar is more impulsive, he doesn't get angry internally such a long time before he explodes.

 - Usually Hepar doesn't seem to be happy.

 - It is never good enough for them.

 - I cured a man with Hepar from a very bad cough, with a specific inflammation of the inguinal region, with stinking pus coming out, and this man was my step -father.

 - These people can be very, very hard on other people.

- I’m sure that in the city or the village you come from there is somebody whom you were afraid of as a child and who was always angry; somebody who lived alone, with a very big, long jacket, untidy, unshaved, by appearance somebody like Sulphur, but not happy.

 - Sulphur can be happy in his chaos, Hepar not.

 - They never laugh and they are angry at the slightest triviality.

 - They are sensitive to everything, especially to pain.

 - They can become unconscious from it, even when the pain is not so strong.

 - You can see this often in children, for example, when they kick their foot against something and they fall down unconscious.

 - This is Hepar.

- Pain is something subjective and they feel it so strongly that they even faint.

 - You find this in the Repertory on page 90 "unconsciousness pain, from".

 - A second Hepar element is if they have pain and don't become unconscious, they can become angry, really angry, violent from pain.

 - So in this case the desire and the sensitivity to coldness clearly indicated Hepar.

 - In children who put the cover above their head it is an important indication for Hepar.

Hepar is an important differential diagnostic remedy to Nux vomica. You know that Nux vomica likes fat and highly seasoned food; Hepar Sulphurhas the same desires. Both are chilly and are easily angry, but Hepar tries to withhold its anger and then comes the anxiety and the depression. Nux vomica doesn't withhold anything, he can't, he just throws things out.

The essential thing in Nux vomica are the spasm. You see them all over the body, spasms in the eyes, the stomach, the abdomen, the rectum, the testicles, the feet, everywhere.

But I wanted to say something about the impulse to kill. They can become very very angry as we can see in Hepar. The differential diagnosis between Hepar and Nux vomica is often not easy. The irritability of Hepar is terrible, also of Nux vomica, but where is the difference between them?

You know of Hepar that he is already irritated by the slightest noise. Somebody is sitting with many other people in a bus, one is turning the paper, another one smells very strongly, a Sulphur woman is sitting there with a lot of make-up, another one is sleeping and is grinding his teeth. Nux vomica is sitting here and there Hepar. Tell me how they will react. What does Hepar do and what Nux vomica?

Answer: Hepar doesn't go along with the bus.

A : Yes, when he sees this he wouldn't even enter the bus. But let's suppose he didn't see this beforehand.

Answer: He can't control his anger.

A : No, no, he is controlling his anger. He is sitting with set teeth and turns everything inside out, while Nux vomica explodes. There is a difference on the mental level.

Remark: Hepar would set fire to the bus.

A : Yes, Hepar would set fire to the bus.

Remark: And if somebody would sneeze in his face he could kill him.

A : Yes, maybe. Anyway Hepar reacts in a way that he would withhold his anger. Then he gets anxiety from this, anxiety for his own danger. He feels that he could kill and because of this anxiety he withdraws himself and he has an aversion to company.

In Nux vomica it is rather a sudden impulse and then they shout. They show it.

Both are chilly, both like highly seasoned food, pungent food and fat. Hepar prefers sour, sour things, mustard. The typical Hepar lunch is a German specialty, trotter with sauerkraut and mustard.

The target organ is the skin. Hepar is one of the most important remedies in eczema and in asthma from suppressed eruptions.

Hepar is a lot more chilly than Nux vomica and they tolerate the sun, Nux vomica doesn't.

A : This is difficult to say. Anyway Hepar, Arsenicum, Psorinum and Silicea are very chilly.

 Hepar sulphuris was a good proposal, but here we are dealing with an influenza, and in Hepar sulphuris it is which acute disease in 90 % ? A purulent tonsilitis. And then you see them sitting close to the heat and with the slightest draft of air the pain becomes worse. They perspire the whole night, like which other remedy ? Look at "perspiration night, lasting all night without relief" (p. 1294), there are 2 capital remedies: Hepar sulphuris and Mercurius.Hepar sulphuris perspires as much as Mercurius, but the big difference is that Hepar sulphuris is covering himself up to the tip of the nose. He just can't put one little finger out of the blankets, he just can not bear it.

- A: Mercurius doesn't like it very warm and Hepar likes it very warm, very warm.

 - Both have bad inflammations, both are sensitive to cold, but Hepar is much more sensitive in this way than Mercurius.

- Somebody told me about one of his patients who has her teeth extracted because of toothache and afterwards she had more pain, but it was another kind of pain.

 - What is the first remedy we think of?

 - Answer : "Hypericum."

 - A : Yes, right, pain after treatment of teeth is Hypericum.

 - But do you think that Hypericum would act in this case? She had pain before the extraction of the teeth and afterwards the pain was even worse and because of this pain she went to the dentist.

 - Remark : "But the pain has changed."

 - A : Yes, right, the pain has changed, it has become worse.

 - I think that the extraction of the teeth was a suppression and therefore she will need the same remedy as before.

 - Normally this is so.

 - She said that it was a shooting pain.

 - Shooting pain is Hypericum, first you have to try Hypericum, and then ask why she has this toothache.

 - Usually you will find a mental reason.

With other remedies like Causticum, Plumbum, Mercurius, Argentum nitricum, Natrummuriaticum and so on the paralysis develops slowly; with this remedy the symptoms appear shortly after the causation.

P : (almost crying) Yesterday my daughter came. She divorced her husband and now she is all alone with her 4 year old child. And this affected my heart.

It might be, don't ignore that. Ignatia is not only a hysterical remedy. If the grief is really very strong it might affect their heart.

My throat was constricting. I couldn't breathe anymore, my throat was closing. I couldn't breathe, it was as if I was choking.

Do you see the sympathy in her, "What will happen to the child?" It is the sympathetic element of Ignatia and on the other side the effect of wounded honor.

 Aggravation from tobacco.

If you are sitting somewhere and two tables away a woman starts coughing when you are smoking this is Ignatia. Ignatia is the first, the most important remedy which doesn't tolerate tobacco smoke.

When I was following a course with Vithoulkas in Edipsos there was also a woman who complained about my smoking, although we were very close to the sea with a lot of fresh air! This was clearly Ignatia. She adored George on her knees.

People who come from America with the picture of George on their chest need Ignatia.

A : She liked fruit a lot.

MP : Yes, a lot.

We often find this remedy in families who overprotect their children. They care too much about their child. She may not eat an apple that hasn't been washed; they worry that she could fall when she is running and so on. The parents worry too much and the child becomes hysterical.

It is very interesting what Kent writes. You can see what he writes comes from his own experience and not from other teachers, "...sensitive, highly educated, overloaded at school, in studies or in practicing an art profession."

These are very highly educated people who give you a somewhat haughty expression, so that you have to think of Platina in certain circumstances.

I remember a case of a patient with anxieties and so on, I could smell the beer when he was in my consultation room. There is also this Medorrhinum type who is very closed and needs alcohol to open up.

If you smell alcohol on a patient's breath, you have to think of Natrum muriaticum and Medorrhinum.

 This was a classical Medorrhinum case. These are people who have traveled around the whole world, who had all the women on earth, who drank a lot, who lived at night and slept during the day, people who lived excessively. They are sensitive to gonorrhea. In such a case it is easy to find the remedy.

 He had a myocardial infarct. Medorrhinum is also a heart remedy, because they work with their heart. The remedy is not in the rubric "angina pectoris", but you should not forget Medorrhinum in myocardial infarct and angina pectoris.

I don't know why, but it is a kind of sycotic expression. And they walk like a woman, they behave in a very female way. Often they have long hair, usually they are not shaved and very often they wear white shoes. Often they wear very fine shoes, these Italian shoes. This is the classical appearance of Medorrhinum.

 A : Yes, typically the strongest symptom is the sleeping position, the knee-elbow position. A second strong symptom is the sycotic tendency with the nose and the eyes, discharges from nose and eyes, agglutinated eyes.

What is the most important symptom in newborn children?

 The strong emotionality and the anticipating fears let us swing between Lycopodium clavatum and Argentum nitricum. The first remedy in anticipating fears is Argentum nitricum, the second is Lycopodium clavatum and the third is Gelsemium. But usually Gelsemium is easier to recognize because of the weakness, the heaviness of the limbs and the trembling.

If you don't know which remedy to choose in strong anticipating fears, whether Lycopodium clavatum or Argentum nitricum is the right remedy, you have to think of Medorrhinum.

She is better from and she likes bitter drinks and bitter food. 

This remedy hates until the last day of their life if they are really hurt deeply. I know a woman who was mortified by her own mother. She hated her mother for 10 years, until she died at the age of 92, and she didn't go to the funeral, deep hatred.

Here the reason is not psychological, there is no disappointment, otherwise we could think of Natrum muriaticum.

You see she reproaches her mother.

This is strange, it is a vicious circle. First she had problems in the sixth class, then at home, then her father died, again grief, then she lost her job, she went deeper, deeper and deeper.

It will be very difficult to cure this patient so that she really feels good and happy. We have to try to change her circumstances. Maybe she can become happy if she finds somebody who understands her well, who wants to marry her.

P : I just can't go outside when it is very warm. Immediately I get a headache. This is very bad. I don't see anything. My eyes close.

These are all confirmations. Pain in the back, lying on a hard surface ameliorates, herpetic lips, headache in the sun.

She also has dandruff on the head, an important symptom for Natrum muriaticum.

A very peculiar symptom is that she is chilly and she wants cold drinks. This is peculiar for this remedy. What is the remedy?

Natrum muriaticum.

All right, she is sighing, this is an Ignatia symptom, she has a lump in her throat, but this is Natrum muriaticum also. Both remedies have many symptoms in common and they are complementary. Natrum muriaticum can come in an Ignatia state after a big grief. I will show you this.

That's why the grief is so deep in Natrum muriaticum, because their relationships on the emotional level are so serious, it is a catastrophe for them when a partner runs away. There is no other remedy which holds on so deeply in an emotional relationship like Natrum muriaticum. These are very "faithful" people.

A : When you are angry they cannot approach you and give you a pat on your shoulder?

P : No, it must go away in peace.

He is a relatively closed person, aversion sun, aggravation sun, headache after injury, the aphthae, herpes on the penis, desire salt, aversion fish, this is all Natrum muriaticum. He also has this thin neck and the cracks, but you can't see it clearly.

This is typical. I was with a Natrum muriaticum person in Spain. He was lying on the beach and after 10 minutes he was really dried out and had something to drink. They have to drink constantly.

Natrum muriaticum loves animals, because they can talk to them without being hurt. For this reason Natrum muriaticum likes a cat or a dog that they can unburden their heart to and say everything they want, because the animal doesn't respond. They can't bear to be hurt emotionally.  

A few days ago I saw a child who was completely stiff and had pain all over the body, a headache and pain in the back. Because of the pain in the back the child had to lie flat on the ground. The consultation was very difficult, but the symptoms were so clear that I was sure of the remedy, only I didn't see the reason why.

The mother was weeping during the whole consultation - probably she was Pulsatilla - and afterwards she said, "Doctor, I must tell you something, I've just divorced." Then I knew the reason. The child had these symptoms since the divorce of the parents and they didn't realize the connection.

 If you don't have the picture of Natrum muriaticum in your head you have problems. If you have seen many Natrum muriaticum patients, their skin, their way of looking, and also the curled hair is a characteristic of Natrum muriaticum.

This is another keynote for Natrum muriaticum, as well as for Medorrhinum. You know that Medorrhinum also has this anticipating fear. I had a Medorrhinum patient, whenever he came he always smelled of beer. Before every consultation he had to drink three or four beers. This is also very typical for Natrum muriaticum. If you want to talk to a Natrum muriaticum person you have to give him beer and after the third beer he won't stop drinking or talking. In practice it is indeed very difficult to offer your patients beer so that they can talk openly to you. Soon you will get the reputation of being an alcohol doctor.

I have a Natrum muriaticum friend who never talks about his problems unless he drinks six beers. Then he starts talking and he never stops.

Natrum muriaticum needs the alcohol so that he can express himself. The anxiety about expressing their feelings is a little bit anesthetized by the alcohol. This is very typical, also for Medorrhinum.

The combination of dandruff, hay fever (IRRITATION/TROUBLESOME FROM RUNNING NOSE , EYES AND SNEEZING ) and a crack in the lip is typical for Natrum muriaticum, also the combination of headache, backache, and dandruff. When these three symptoms appear together it indicates Natrum muriaticum very strongly, and of course the aphthae.

As you can see Natrum muriaticum has both symptoms, the amelioration as well as the aggravation, the desire as well as the aversion to salt and the desire as well as the aversion to fish.

He doesn't show his feelings, his grief, his misery.

With the last cases I wanted to show you that the divergent strabismus is a very strong symptom of Natrum muriaticum. You know that grief is the cause in Natrum muriaticum, for example, headache from grief.

 JS: Of course the main remedy for wanting to be alone and liking to be alone, is Natrum muriaticum. They enjoy their own company. The other remedy, Sepia for instance, is ameliorated when alone. JS: Of course the Natrums all have weak ankles. It is a characteristic of the Natrums. Some stronger than others, but the Natrums generally have weak ankles.

Js : You will see in Natrum muriaticum that they try to tell a joke or something and it may be funny, but the way the timing goes, it is not funny. This is the stuck-door syndrome, there is very much awkwardness.

This patient is too strict, too hard - I don't know how I should express it, but in Pulsatilla you feel immediately the softness when you talk with them; and when you touch the emotional level in Pulsatilla immediately tears are coming from their eyes, no matter whether it is a man or a woman.

This is typical and you will always see in Nux vomica that they have an urge for stool, but the stool is never satisfied, never sufficient enough.

The most pain of Nux vomica is accompanied with urge for stool; pain in the abdomen, crmaps, colics, there is always an urge for stool. This is very, very typical for Nux vomica.

After a nap when he hasn't been disturbed he feels good again. This is typical for Nux vomica: short sleep ameliorates, but only when he hasn't been disturbed. This is one of the most important key-notes of Nux vomica.

Hepar is an important differential diagnostic remedy to Nux vomica. You know that Nux vomica likes fat and highly seasoned food; Hepar Sulphurhas the same desires. Both are chilly and are easily angry, but Hepar tries to withhold its anger and then comes the anxiety and the depression. Nux vomica doesn't withhold anything, he can't, he just throws things out.

The essential thing in Nux vomica are the spasm. You see them all over the body, spasms in the eyes, the stomach, the abdomen, the rectum, the testicles, the feet, everywhere.

In the village where he lives he is known as an angry, easily offended man.

P: A hot-tempered character. I can't rest as long as there is still work to be done. Nobody can give me explanations, it is important that everything goes on, long explanations are not needed. When the others are still working on their first task I have already started a new task.

If somebody says that he always has asthmatic attacks whenever he is excited and you are looking for a remedy first of all you have to think of Nux vomica; spasms from excitement. A child is excited and then has an asthmatic attack - and he becomes easily excited. As I already told you the spasms are an essential point in Nux vomica, and the second point is the hypersensitivity. They are easily irritable, they are not only easily angry, but in general there is an exaggerated sensitivity. This is the second important point in Nux vomica.

These people are on the edge of their nerves, they react very quickly.

You will see this in other cases. Many of these Nux vomica children make music besides their studies at school. They like music, they are good musicians and they have a very good feeling for rhythm.

Our previous Belgian Minister of Economy is the most beautiful Nux vomica person you can imagine. He studied economics at the University and he is a brilliant conductor of classical music; a very controlled, narrow man, who walks exactly the way I described.

This is the reason, not the house dust. The fact is that he did many more things, more mental work at the music school, this the reason for the allergy. It is strange that a child never had coryza and suddenly starts sneezing at the age of 8. Why? Or when a child suddenly has epileptic attacks. There must be a reason for that. In Nux vomica it is too much mental work.

When someone says, that he can not sleep on the left side and that is underlined five times, then we have to think of Phosphorus and Lachesis.

Usually, Phosphorus has a desire salt, highly seasoned food and ice-cream

 And now comes the differential diagnosis to Sulphur, because she has dark lips. The differential diagnosis between Phosphorus and Sulphur is not often so easy. Do not forget that Phosphorus also has fear of high places

He is anxious, because the child of a friend of him is ill. This means that he is very sympathetic, he is anxious about the others and that is the main point. Now, I will try to find out the constitutional symptoms of this remedy

Four words: anxiety, very thirsty, offended easily, position sleep: on the left side. That is all what I wrote down.

A hard bed is only good for Natrum muriaticum, Sepia, Pulsatilla, Rhus toxicodendron and some other remedies, but not for Arnica, Baptisia, Silicea and so on.

 In Rhus toxicodendron patients I am sure that they have to get up 2, 3, 4 times at night to urinate. You will see.

great restlessness, vesicular eruptions, sleeplessness, turning around in bed ? Which is the remedy ? Rhus toxicodendron.

You couldn't tolerate tight clothes, had headaches, especially after shopping and some liver spots.
