CASES

1.  Give the six main remedies with craving for salt:

 A:

 - Natrum muriaticum.

 - Phosphorus.

 - Veratrum.

 - Argentum nitricum.

 - Carbo vegetabilis.

 - Medorrhinum.

 - Nitricum acidum.

 - Lac caninum.

 - Causticum.

 - Conium.

 - Tuberculinum.

 - Calcarea phosphorica.

 R:This combination: strong craving for salt + strong craving for pepper + strong craving for whiskey: Lac caninum usually.

 2. Give five keynotes or strong confirmatory symptoms for Argentum nitricum:

 A:

 - Fear high places, fear of high buildings, that they may fall upon them. Fear of high places and impulse to jump from the high building.

 - Desire sweets and desire salt.

 R:If you see somebody comes in and you have underlined three times: desire sweet + desire salt, the first remedy to think of is Argentum nitricum.

 - Aggravation from anticipation of an event.

 R:In other words: they are anticipating going to the movie and they are thinking so much about it, that they get into a terrible anxiety state, or may be they have diarrhoea, something like this.

 - Aggravation from sweets. Diarrhoea from sweets also.

 - Very superstitious, fixed ideas.

 - Hurry when walking.

 R:Argentum nitricum has this tendency that they start walking and they have a feeling something is going wrong, or something is about to happen. And they get nervous and they start walking faster and faster to get away from it and pretty soon all the sudden they stop, they go: "Ah, I am running, what am I running for?" They slow down and then it builds up again. Like Sulphuricum acidum which has that symptom very strongly. (Tarentula can also have it).

 - Very strong claustrophobia.

 - Splinter-like pains, especially in the throat.

 R:  Pain like a splinter in the throat. The other remedies: Hepar, Nitricum acidum, Silicea, Kali carbonicum, Natrum muriaticum.

 - Fear of losing self-control, especially in terms of an impulse.

 R:  Impulses is the main keynote for Argentum nitricum. Impulses to do ridiculous things, to jump from a high place or to take a screw driver and put it into the electric socket, or to touch something poisonous, or a bee, or something like this. Where they feel that they may lose control and that they may do something very dangerous. Or sometimes they may have fear that they will lose control and hurt somebody in the family - their child, or something like that.

 - Great anxiety about health.

 - Fear of fainting is a keynote.

 R:  Although there is one remedy that has that more strongly: Lac caninum. Argentum nitricum: feeling like they will faint in a crowd. Generally they don't faint, they have very good circulation usually.

 - Fear to be alone, you can consider that a keynote. Need for company.

 - Desire for strong cheese.

 - Palpitations lying on the right side.

 - Palpitations, feels as if the heart will jump out of the chest, jump out of position.

 - A spot on the eye.

 R:  They develop a conjunctivitis in one spot, a raw spot very well circumscribed. A small spot, about may be half a centimetre wide, very red, raw, looks like raw meat.

 - Aggravation from thinking about it.

 R:  Oxalicum acidum is the main remedy that has aggravation from thinking of the complaint.

 A:  Forsaken feeling?

 R:  It is not so strong to be a keynote. Argentum nitricum may have that, but the main remedy for forsaken feeling will be Pulsatilla. Argentum nitricum also has it.

 A:  Desire for alcoholic drinks?

 R:  They may desire, but it is not enough to be considered a keynote.

 A:  Desire for fresh air?

 R:  Desire fresh air, because Argentum nitricum is extremely hot. Desire fresh air, but not enough for it to be considered a keynote.

 A:  Desire to have the head bound?

 R:  They do like to have the head bound, but maybe not enough to be a keynote though.

 A:  Trembling?

 R:  Of course they do have trembling, but I wouldn't consider that a keynote.

 A:  Question (...).

 R:  The main remedies that when they see somebody else standing at the edge, have fear for that person standing at the edge: Sulphur and Calcarea.

 3.  Give four remedies with stomach pain at 2 a.m. :

 R:

 - Medorrhinum, number 1.

 - Kali carbonicum, number 2.

 - Arsenicum, number 3.

 - Lycopodium, number 4.

 4.  Give the three main remedies for right shoulder pain:

 R:

 - Sanguinaria is the main remedy.

 - Chelidonium.

 - Ferrum muriaticum.

 R: Sulphur has more left shoulder pain.

 Lycopodium has right shoulder pain, but it is not one of the main remedies for that.

 Ledum has more left shoulder pain than right shoulder pain.

 5. Give the two main remedies for diarrhoea, driving the patient out of bed in the morning, waking him to go for stool, the first thing in the morning at 6 a.m. :

 R: Sulphur and Aloe are the main ones.

 R:  All the Natrums will usually wake up and after they are up, then they have the diarrhoea. The main thing with Natrum sulphuricum is after they wake up, then they go. Usually it does not wake them. If it wakes them we think mostly of Sulphur or Aloe. If we just say diarrhoea in the morning, then Natrum sulphuricum is the main remedy. But usually it is after they wake up and they have been up for ten, fifteen, twenty minutes, then they have to go immediately, they have to rush to the toilet. Amelioration after stool, the main remedy is Natrum sulphuricum and Borax (another Natrum).

 Nux vomica has stool and then they feel they still must have more stool. Sometimes the pain will be temporarily ameliorated by the stool.

 6. Give the main remedy with aggravation at 9 a.m.  and the main remedy with aggravation at 9 p.m. :

 R:

 - Aggravation at 9 a.m. : Chamomilla.

 - Aggravation at 9 p.m. : Bryonia.

 7.  Give four remedies for the symptom silent grief:

 A:

 - Natrum muriaticum.

 - Ignatia.

 - Phosphoricum acidum.

 - Staphisagria.

 8.  A woman comes to your office and she says that her main problem is that she is having menstrual troubles and great tiredness and fatigue ever since the time she had an abortion. What is the most likely remedy that you are going to be giving her?

 A:

 - Sepia.

 R:  Sabina is very good for the abortion, but not so much for the consequent effects after the abortion.

 Kali carbonicum you may think of, but Sepia should be the first.

 Pulsatilla will develop menstrual problems, but not usually fatigue.

 But if we see both menstrual problems and fatigue following an abortion: Sepia.

 9.  Another woman comes to your office and she is complaining of premenstrual syndrome and she has a very strong bearing down sensation. And you notice that she is very aggressive. You say: "Are you irritable?" And she says: "What do you mean, am I irritable!! Why you ask me this question!? What kind of a doctor are you?" And you quiet her down a little bit and you say: "Do you have any strong food craving?" And she says: "I have a craving for meat." What remedy you are most likely going to be giving her?

 A:

 - Lilium tigrinum.

 R:  Tremendous bearing down sensation you will find in which remedies mostly?

 - Sepia.

 - Lilium tigrinum

 - Murex.

 - Belladonna.

 10. A man comes into your office. But he doesn't just come into your office, he runs into your office. Very hurried. Speaking rapidly. He takes a list out of his pocket and he starts to list you some symptoms. He finishes his list, he puts it down and he pulls another list out of his back pocket, that is on a little scrap of paper and tells you three more symptoms. And then he has written down on his hand one other symptom. And he says that he is in a terrible state with many compulsive activities. You see that he is very thin and you say: "Are you eating okay? Do you have a good appetite?" He says: "I eat like a horse, I eat constantly, it is the only thing that helps me." You notice that he is sweating in the room. What remedy are you most likely going to be giving him?

 A:

 - Iodium (Argentum nitricum, Bromium).

If I say food:

 - A strong craving for sweets + salt, you will be thinking of Argentum nitricum.

 - A strong craving for sweets + salt + fat, you will be thinking of Medorrhinum.

 - A strong craving for sweets + fat + spicy, you will be thinking of Sulphur.

 - A strong craving for sweets + aversion to eggs, you will be thinking of Sulphur or Ferrum.

 So you see many times you reduce to just this area.

 If I say fears:

 - Fear of dark + thunderstorms, you will be thinking of Phosphorus, or Natrum muriaticum.

 - Fear of animals + water + dark, you will be thinking of Stramonium.

 - Fear of heights + mice, you will be thinking of Calcarea.

* E.g.  all natrums produce a tremendous tendency towards fever blisters and canker sores around the mouth. We see a case that has a tremendous tendency towards canker sores and fever blisters around the mouth, but it doesn't seem to be Natrum muriaticum, Borax, or one of the main natrums. Then our mind may turn: "Well, could this be one of the other natrums?"

if you can remember that all of the carbons are very chilly, then you may hear of a carbon you don't know well. Or you come across a small symptom when you are taking a case, you look it up and it has a carbon: Strontium carbonicum. The patient says also that he is very chilly. You know that all the carbons are very chilly, and so your mind is reinforced along this remedy. Then you can investigate more clear mindedly.

a case appears to you to be Kali carbonicum, but something doesn't fit, the patient is too warm to be Kali carbonicum. But you have this feeling deep inside: the patient must be a Kali carbonicum, or something like a Kali carbonicum. Which of the other kalis may it be? Kali sulphuricum, Kali iodatum, Kali nitricum (a very warm blooded remedy generally).

- Let's say that it was a kali with a large goitre and hyperthyroid symptoms, then we may be preferring Kali iodatum, because all the iodiums have the tendency for goitre and for hyperthyroid symptoms.

 Let's say that it was a kali, but it had a strong aversion to eggs, then we may be preferring Kali sulphuricum.

R: No. It is a good thought, Kali phosphoricum can have uterine haemorrhage. But the main remedy that has tremendous haemorrhage without pain is Kali ferrocyanicum. (Kent: female, metrorrhagia, painless: Kali ferrocyanicum (3), page 730.)

stout : heavy built

* E.g.  many of the calcareas will have a craving for eggs:

 - Calcarea carbonica very strong.

 - Calcarea phosphorica, sometimes.

 - Calcarea fluorica, sometimes.

The carbons will have craving for eggs:

 - Calcarea carbonica.

 - Baryta carbonica.

 - Natrum carbonicum can have it.

* E.g.  all the carbons have a tendency for obesity:

 - Calcarea carbonica.

 - Kali carbonicum.

 - Natrum carbonicum.

 - Magnesia carbonica.

Also:

 - Carbo vegetabilis is stout.

 - Graphitis - all carbon and nothing else, is very stout.

 The carbon element has a stoutness to it, also the calcarea element.

 When we put them together, we find the stoutest, or the most commonly stout remedy of all: Calcarea carbonica.

all the natrums have aggravation from milk:

 - Natrum muriaticum.

 - Natrum carbonicum.

 - Natrum sulphuricum.

 - Natrum arsenicum, very strong.

 Many of the carbons will have an aggravation from milk.

 - Kali carbonicum etc.

Natrum and carbon together, it reinforces and gives us the strongest aggravation from milk in our materia medica: Natrum carbonicum.

 * E.g.  all the magnesias affect the nerves very much.

 Also phosphorus affects the nerves very strongly.

 These two elements together: Magnesia phosphorica, a tremendous effect on the nerves and our strongest remedy for neuralgia.

 Once you have learned these things you will be able to almost mathematically predict in which ways these remedies will reinforce each other.

II. Sometimes they will diffuse the energy of one another.

 * E.g.  the natrums are mostly warm blooded.

 Arsenicum is mostly pretty chilly.

 So Natrum arsenicum will be less warm and less chilly, more moderate, than either one of the elements by themselves.

* E.g.  the calcareas crave eggs.

 Sulphur has aversion to eggs.

 So Calcarea sulphurica of all the remedies, will be the most neutral about eggs.

 III. Some symptoms are specific and peculiar for only that combination. It doesn't have anything to do with the two families that they come from.

 * E.g.  calcarea and phosphorus come together and produce a strong craving for bacon and smoked meat. Which neither will have by themselves.

 * E.g.  ferrum and iodium come together and produce a very strong craving for salty fish. Which neither will have by themselves.

 * E.g.  calcarea and silicea come together and produce a strong mental symptom: speaks with the death. Which neither will have by themselves.

So there will be:

 - Symptomatology that is specific, peculiar for the combination itself.

 - Symptomatology of both of the elements that make up the combination.

 It is very important to know both these types of symptomatology.

 IV. A phenomena called gradation, according to which salt is added to the remedy.

 * E.g.  the natrums have a great deal to do with grief that is imprinted on the individual. Yet there will be a moderation; as we go through the different salts of natrum, a downward gradation occurs:

 - Natrum muriaticum, most affected by grief.

 - Natrum carbonicum.

 - Natrum sulphuricum.

 - Natrum phosphoricum.

- Natrum arsenicum etc., least affected by grief.

 The natural tendencies of the natrums are grief (like the salt from our tears). And yet as you change the anion, which is attached to this natrum, you will change the degree to which this symptom is expressed.

 * E.g.  the same sort of gradation with heat in the calcareas.

 - Calcarea sulphurica will be most warm.

 - Calcarea iodata, perhaps even warmer than Calcarea sulphurica.

 - Calcarea fluorica.

 - Calcarea phosphorica.

 - Calcarea carbonica, almost always chilly.

 - Calcarea arsenica, even more chilly.

* Fluoricum acidum has a very high sex drive and pushes the people around them into sexual situations, which are for their own satisfaction, without any concern for the person that they are manipulating. (Kent: indifference to loved ones, Fluoricum acidum (2).)

* Nitricum acidum is very selfish, irritable, unsympathetic to other people's problems. Only concerned about themselves.

 * Phosphoricum acidum emotionally becomes flat; apathetic to every emotion.

 * Sulphuricum acidum is extremely hurried, so preoccupied and so mentally agitated that they begin to feel a type of disconnection with the people around them. They feel a type of alienation from their own emotions.

Physical \ general

 - Very chilly generally. One of the more chilly remedies, generally speaking.

 * Nitricum acidum is extremely chilly.

 * Phosphoricum acidum is very chilly.

 * Sulphuricum acidum tends to be chilly, even though sulphur is warm.

 * Fluoricum acidum is the exception: it is quite hot. (Here two elements are coming together and the fluoric element over the temperature is so strong that it overcomes the coldness of the acids.)

 -  Offensiveness is another strong characteristic. There are two remedies that have urine that is so offensive, that after they have urinated and have flushed the toilet, the odour is still so strong that you can't go into the bathroom immediately afterwards:

 * Nitricum acidum.

 * Benzoicum acidum.

 * Nitricum acidum has tremendous offensive perspiration.

 The breath can be quite offensive in the acids, because there is an element of fermentation, or decay: in the urine, the breath, the perspiration etc.

 - Weakness. An element of weakness and aggravation from exertion is usually quite common to all acids.

 A: The weakest are Phosphoricum acidum, Muriaticum acidum and Picricum acidum?

 R: Yes, but you will also see strong elements of weakness that will go along with all of the acids.

 * Sulphuricum acidum can be extremely weak in certain stages.

 * Nitricum acidum has a great tendency to weakness as well.

Physical

 - Diarrhoeas. Very often associated with diarrhoeas, all the acids.

 - Increased appetite. Often associated with increased appetite.

 - Urinary troubles are quite common.

 - Excitement of the sexual sphere is a very strong element in almost all acids. The acid element will often produce this exaltation of the sexual sphere:

 * Fluoricum acidum has a strong perversion.

 * Nitricum acidum also has a very strong sex drive.

 * Picricum acidum sometimes has a tremendous sex drive etc.

 * Phosphoricum acidum in the early stages will have a high sex drive. Then will later go to collapse of the sexual element and then goes to impotence and indifference to sex.

Many of the carbons will have a strong tendency to stomach disorders:

 * Natrum carbonicum.

 * Calcarea carbonica.

 * Magnesia carbonica.

 * Carbo vegetabilis.

 * Carbo animalis.

 * Graphitis.

* Kali arsenicosum strongest anxiety.

 * Kali carbonicum strong anxiety.

 * Kali phosphoricum can be quite anxious, to say the least.

* Kali iodatum the hottest.

 * Kali sulphuricum also quite warm.

 * Kali nitricum also quite warm.

 * Kali phosphoricum is between here, not so chilly.

 * Kali carbonicum to the chilly side.

 * Kali bichromicum even more chilly usually.

 * Kali arsenicosum quite chilly.

- Aggravation at night, especially:

 * Kali arsenicosum, Kali bichromicum more around midnight, or 1 a.m.

 * Kali carbonicum 2 a.m.  especially and 2 till 4 a.m.  quite strong.

 * Kali nitricum 3 a.m.

 * Kali sulphuricum usually 3 a.m.

 * Kali iodatum 5 a.m.

- The sinus troubles of the kalis are almost legendary, quite strongly running through all. Quite strong sinus trouble and lots of mucus: thick mucus, often green or yellow (depending on which one of the remedies), ugly mucus.

 See CASE 5.

 * Kali bichromicum is more green.

 * Kali sulphuricum is more yellow.

* Kali carbonicum has the keynote swelling in this region. But under the eyes: most of the kalis have this.

* Kali carbonicum is one of the most important remedies for pneumonias.

* Muriaticum acidum tremendous aggravation by the sea.

 * Magnesia muriatica very much aggravated by the sea.

 * Natrum muriaticum, usually aggravated by the sea, sometimes ameliorated.

- Headaches, the main remedies for headaches and migraines:

 * Natrum carbonicum.

 * Natrum muriaticum.

 * Natrum arsenicum.

- Amelioration from stool, common in them. (You find it in different places: anxiety - better stool; irritability - better stool; anger - worse before stool. Not one rubric that is better from stool.)

 * Natrum sulphuricum and Borax are the main remedies.

 * Natrum muriaticum.

 * Zincum.

A: Fastidiousness, a keynote for Arsenicum.

 A: Sudden urging for stool, a keynote for Sulphur.

 A: Amelioration at sea, a keynote for Medorrhinum.

 A: Craving fruit, a keynote for Veratrum and Phosphoricum acidum.

 A: Aversion to fat, a keynote for Pulsatilla.

 A: Worse lying on the left side, a keynote for Phosphorus.

Colchicum: sensitive to odours, aversion to eggs, motion ameliorates, swelling of the eyelids, headaches.

A: Ferrum: arthritis in the shoulder, palpitations, high blood pressure, chilly, craving for bread, hernia, sleeping on the back, irritability,  sensitive to odours.

A: Colchicum: sensitive to odours, aversion to eggs, motion ameliorates, swelling of the eyelids, headaches.

 A: Calcarea fluorica.

 R: Usually Calcarea fluorica will have craving for eggs.

 A: She is putting on weight easily, like with Calcarea. She is fatigued etc.

R: Calcarea fluorica can sometimes have modalities like Rhus tox:

 Better from motion, better from exertion, better from heat.

 Nodosities, bunions, desires fruit, sensitive to odours.

A: Crotalus horridus: numbness of hands when sewing, difficulties in speech, forgetfulness for names.

A: Ptelea.

 R: It is really one of the main remedies for strong aggravation from cheese. They hate cheese and fats. They get bloated and diarrhoea, get pains in the liver etc. Strong aversion to fat (3).

Strong tendency to indigestion from eggs: Colchicum, Ferrum and China arsenicosum should be there (add it).

A: Sleeplessness from grief: Natrum muriaticum, Ignatia, Kali bromatum.

R: There are many points for Staphisagria, but the essence of Staphisagria is what? Very sweet, repressed, never hurt anybodies feelings, meek. That is not this patient.

R: Biting the fingernails. A very strong keynote for Medorrhinum. Many other remedies have this, but let me describe each of those.

 Biting nails:

 - Natrum muriaticum: you see them biting the fingernails like this (...), it is because of their inner tension and they can't express clearly.

 - Baryta carbonica bites the fingernails very much. You see these little children, they are very afraid and they are biting their fingernails.

 - Medorrhinum, this type of biting their fingernails, where they bite the nails all the way down until the fingers bleed, they bite the nails down till there is nothing. And when the fingernails are completely bitten, then she takes her toenails, and she bites the toenails too. This is only Medorrhinum. To this extreme, this is a strong keynote for Medorrhinum.

 - Sulphur bites the fingernails. Not because of itching, but it is because they are too lazy to go and find the scissors to clip the fingernails (laughter). You have to differentiate even between something like this.

 Feeling that they are taller than other people even when they are not, is a keynote for Platinum.

So when you are seeing a case which says: "Every time I get a cold, it goes to my chest." the first remedy you think of is Phosphorus.

R: Moving around all the time, yes. So, we can look this up under desire to travel. So, if we take: desire to travel and dissatisfaction, then we will think of what remedy?

 A: Tuberculinum, Calcarea phosphorica, Ignatia.

- Aurum. It comes out Aurum. Can he be an Aurum? Maybe, but why don't we like Aurum? He has a depression, but not suicidal. Aurum should have some thoughts of death.

 - Lycopodium. Why not Lycopodium? He has lack of confidence, he has symptoms with his stomach, he is timid. Lycopodium is usually quite timid inside, very timid. They have a bluff, that they are very arrogant, but inside they feel afraid. Why not Lycopodium? When Lycopodium is irritable with people, they get irritated with people that are below them or above them? Irritable with persons below him, but this patient has irritability with people above him.

 - Argentum nitricum. He has the impulse to jump, he has aggravation from sweets; impulses in general. But what did I say for his personality; he is more serious and reserved, whereas Argentum nitricum is very extroverted. So, again it does not come out with anything that seems to help us.

Did you hear the rest of the description? A deep distrust and a feeling of uncertainty, like: "What is going to happen to me?" That is exactly what you will hear over and over again for Arsenicum.

R: So the first part she says: "I am going to get sicker and die," a despair about recovery. This goes mostly for Arsenicum, Calcarea and Nitricum acidum. So then the next words out of her mouth: "And I want to have a baby and I am upset about that." Which goes more for what remedy?

 A: Pulsatilla.

First of all we have very severe itching of the rectum. The main remedy for that is Sulphur. The itching is worse at night and worse from heat, which are also symptoms of Sulphur.

So, when somebody says that they are so angry, all the time angry at everybody and they are very sensitive to noise, they have to keep turning the sound down and down, we think of Nux vomica.

So I asked her: "Are you impatient?", because Nux vomica should be very impatient. She says: "Yes, I am impatient." The way she answers, do you think she is very impatient? No. She is not really impatient.

R: Yes, I asked. And what came out (but I didn't tell you, it came up later in the case), is that she is neither warm nor cold. We would expect, as you point out, Sepia should be on the chilly side and Sulphur should be on the warm side, but we didn't get any information.

R: It is like coca-cola. Fizzy drinks. You know the remedy that has aversion to fizzy drinks? Aversion to soda pop? It is Phosphorus. You know the main remedy that is craving soda pop? It is Phosphorus.

R: Yes, there are two different rubrics and what he does is picking. Parents make no such distinction. Picking is actually to take something out, to try and to take something out. Boring is just ... The two main remedies for boring into the nose? Cina and Arum triphyllum.

R: Yes, there are two different rubrics and what he does is picking. Parents make no such distinction. Picking is actually to take something out, to try and to take something out. Boring is just ... The two main remedies for boring into the nose? Cina and Arum triphyllum.

A: Cina.

 R: Yes, that is a possibility. Cina is boring and they are very aggressive children. They slap the mother.

R: Good, this is a case of Veratrum album, why? From the totality? No, it does not come up in the totality. From keynotes? No. So it comes up from the essence. Now remember this picture, it is exactly the essence of the Veratrum child. Extreme restlessness, where they cannot even sit down to eat. Usually they are being restless, doing useless things. Tearing up a piece of paper to smaller and smaller pieces. Or very often they like to cut with scissors. They will just take a piece of paper and zzzjjjj, for hours just cutting something. Or in your library they start to take the books, they take each book of the shelf and put it over here. And then they get done and then they put each one back on the shelf and then back again. That kind of useless behaviour.

R: No, not always autistic. It may be indicated in autistic children. The usual Veratrum child is precocious, very intellectually developed beyond their years.

R: Very good question. It is sometimes very hard to differentiate Tarentula and Veratrum. The main difference will be that Tarentula will have much more aggressiveness than Veratrum. You see, this child here is not very aggressive. He is restless, but he is not doing naughty things. He is disobedient, but not malicious. Whereas Tarentula, if they have so much energy, they can be so restless, they will also be smacking the mother, they will be kicking, they will be biting, pulling the hair. All these other things as well, usually. Another difference between Tarentula and Veratrum is that Tarentula will be much more sexual very early. Veratrum out of the mania remedies is the least sexual and Tarentula is the most sexual.

A: How do we differentiate between Chamomilla, Cina, Tuberculinum?

 R: All these will be sometimes hyperactive remedies and naughty children. Generally speaking, bad children. The difference will be: in Veratrum the degree of the physical restlessness. They will be the most restless children. Much more restless than Chamomilla, Cina and Tuberculinum. Physically restless. You see, this child cannot even sit down to eat. Tuberculinum, Chamomilla will sit down at least. So that will be the main thing that will indicate towards Veratrum.

He said in Bells palsy many cases are Platinum. I said: "I found the remedy, now I am sure, it has to be Platinum." I gave Platinum 1 M.

R: Because Rhus tox has fear that they may kill, they have superstition, they have delusions to be murdered. How to rule out Rhus tox?

 A: Restlessness.

R: Rhus tox is generally restless, but if it goes to a deep mental state like this, they won't be physical restless anymore. We want to find a remedy that has fear of death to the strongest degree possible. She has fear of death underlined once, twice? A hundred times! You never will find a case that will have fear of death stronger than this. So we want a remedy, it has to have fear of death in capitals. It has to be not just that it is in capitals, it has to be a remedy that has a tremendous fear of death. Rhus tox can have a fear of death, okay, but this degree of fear of death you will find in Aconitum and Stramonium.

A: Wouldn't you expect more violence in Stramonium?

 R: Not necessarily. In Stramonium you may have a strong element of violence, or you may have a strong element of fear, either one just by themselves. The three elements in Stramonium to look for:

 - Tremendous fear.

 - Tremendous violence.

 - Convulsions.

If you find a case with convulsions and anger, it is Stramonium.

 If you find a case with convulsions and great fear, again it is Stramonium. But you may just get the fear, or just get the violence, either one.

R: It was tried already twice. There is itching at the bends of the joints, the main remedy for this is Graphitis. You see eruption around the mouth: Graphitis. Itching in the ear: also Graphitis. And she said there was one time a crack behind the ear. And what is the other thing she says? He is not so thin!

Aversion to lemon is a strong keynote for Sulphur, you didn't know that?

She said: "Oh, constipation, so bad, I used to put my finger inside and pull the stools down." Which is another keynote for Alumina and Nux moschata.

All I have to do is just change some of the symptoms so that it fits let's say for Rhus tox. Much worse in wet weather, better from heat and craving milk.

So here we have a case with aversion to salt, meat, fish and we have to think of Graphitis. Also we have the craving for chicken, which is for Graphitis. And Graphitis is a remedy which will produce cracks in the skin and eczema very much. And also you see she is unrefreshed in the morning, another hint for Graphitis.

- Fear of dark + thunderstorms, you will be thinking of Phosphorus, or Natrum muriaticum.

 - Fear of animals + water + dark, you will be thinking of Stramonium.

 - Fear of heights + mice, you will be thinking of Calcarea.

So we can make a Calcarea sulphurica if we say also craving for green fruit; then it can be Calcarea sulphurica, but not without one strong keynote.

(Kali sulphuricum has aversion for eggs, also Ferrum, Nitricum acidum, Sulphur).

First of all: the main remedy for asthma in the evening is Natrum muriaticum (keynote). It is not so strong listed in the repertory, but it is the main remedy. You know the remedy that likes to drive fast and dangerous and almost suicidal with their driving? Aurum. For daredevil, this sort of doing dangerous things on purpose, for the thrill, think of Medorrhinum and Platinum. So if we say that this case has a grief, a romantic disappointment and then comes on an asthma that is worse in the evening, and he is craving lemon, and salt, who is very fastidious and easily offended and he closes up. Then we are going to think of Natrum muriaticum.

Now I will read it in a different way: here is a man, he is a very sweet likeable person, he wants everybody to like him, he is craving sweets, spicy and salt very much, easily moved, liked consolation, fear of dark and storm. Then we are going to think of Phosphorus.

What are the main remedies for pain in the right shoulder? Sanguinaria, Chelidonium, Ferrum muriaticum. What are some of the main remedies for obesity? Capsicum, Calcarea carbonica, Graphitis, Ferrum. Ferrum is usually a chilly remedy, they sometimes can be warm. We see hints (obesity, craving for sweets, pain in the right shoulder) for Ferrum but the patient is warm, so we want a Ferrum which is warm, which will be?

So when you are seeing a case which says: "Every time I get a cold, it goes to my chest." the first remedy you think of is Phosphorus. (Sticta, the cold usually goes deeper into the nose.)

R: Moving around all the time, yes. So, we can look this up under desire to travel. So, if we take: desire to travel and dissatisfaction, then we will think of what remedy?

 A: Tuberculinum, Calcarea phosphorica, Ignatia.

R: Yes, he wants alcohol, which Tuberculinum will like.

 You know where his acne is? You know, what is called barbers itch? Tuberculinum is one of the main remedies to be thought of, when there is acne all in the area of the beard. So, it is a simple case of Tuberculinum.

 She has a condition that started when she left the security of the family. So I am thinking: "Maybe she is Arsenicum."

R: If Arsenicum has e.g.  an erysipelas, then cold will ameliorate. If they have a chronic pain of the face, then heat will ameliorate.

 Asarum is very strong for cold bathing ameliorates, not just the face but in general. But of course if she would be Asarum, we would expect a different personality: wringing of the hands, the great sensitivity to noise etc., which she doesn't have. And Asarum will be people that may try to contain their emotions, but they never will be able to be like this woman. In Asarum the emotions are bursting out, because of the hysterical element. Here we get the impression of great energy held in check, held in a type of a balance. She is very sharp.

R: No, it is not particulary known for Apis, although it may be. One other feature here is: strong claustrophobia. So if we find a person that:

 - Is very self-contained.

 - Is very neat.

 - With claustrophobia.

 We will be thinking of Natrum muriaticum. So there is maybe a hint that perhaps underlying will be Natrum muriaticum and on the surface is Apis, the acute remedy.

- Asthma, worse in the evening: Natrum muriaticum main remedy.

 - Ailments after grief: Natrum muriaticum, Ignatia main remedies.

 - Craving for salt - Natrum muriaticum.

 - Craving for ice-cream - Phosphorus.

 - Craving for chocolate - Phosphorus, Natrum muriaticum.

 - High sex -  with this high sex drive he gives a peculiar symptom: frequent nocturnal emission, a keynote for Natrum phosphoricum.

 We cross off Calcarea sulphurica and Calcarea fluorica, mostly because they are warm

R: Her main complaint is asthma, where as Calcarea carbonica is not so common a remedy for asthma. It can have asthma of course, but the arsenicums all have the tendency to asthma.

 R: Calcarea arsenica has fear of birds. Like: Ignatia, Calcarea sulphurica.

 R: There are quite a few points for China:

 Touch. Worse from slight touch, which is often with China.

 Waking up at night with the headaches. Headache after midnight, 3 a.m.

 Gas, some flatulence. Craving for sweets.

 R: This was one of the earlier cases I had of China sulphuricum, with this type of headache. But then I started to see a pattern: almost every time I had found a case that was waking up between these hours, 1 and 3 a.m.  and waking up from sleep with very severe migraine headaches, this would be a very strong keynote for China sulphuricum.

One prescriber I know had a case of somebody that had a broken arm and who was in a lot of pain. He gave first Symphytum, Arnica and Bryonia: without effect. Then he said: "Okay, let's try," and he gave Eupatorium, because it felt like it was broken; it gave the patient a lot of relief. You may keep that in mind if you are treating a fracture and you don't get relief from the typical remedies known for fracture.

R: Kali phosphoricum is usually associated with lots of anxiety, as well as the mental weakness.

Alumina. If it is Alumina you like to see a strong tendency to constipation. Sometimes it will be constipation alternating with diarrhoea.

Another thing that will run through almost all cases of Alumina: they can't be hurried. If you tell them to hurry they fall to pieces.

R: Calcarea carbonica:

 He is little bit stout and has fatigue.

 He doesn't like damp and cold.

 He has weakness in his mind.

 He perspires at night.

 He is craving salty food.

What he doesn't have for Calcarea carbonica are the common fears that we expect to see: heights, claustrophobia, animals, mice.

 A: Mistakes, speaking and using wrong words. The strongest which come up are: Lycopodium, Natrum muriaticum, China and Nux moschata.

 A: Difficulty in speech, heaviness of tongue: Gelsemium, Crotalus cascavella.

 A: Clothing aggravates, external throat: Lachesis, Crotalus horridus, Naja, Cenchris, Elaps (all the snakes).

 A: Diarrhoea after breakfast: Natrum sulphuricum, Thuja.

We know the type of Thuja quite well. The Thuja type is quite sensitive and has this very strong tendency to want to please others. Very low self-confidence and feeling that they want other people to like them. So they change what they make out from themselves. Thuja tells lies, it is not exactly that, except in the very deep cases where they tell exact lies. They try to make themselves into what other people like. Here we don't see the personality for Thuja.

 A: Sulphur: she wants cold on the head.

She wants open air. Wanting milk - Sulphur can have it. The main remedy for wanting milk is Rhus tox, also Phosphorus and Tuberculinum.

Ferrum is the main remedy that has these headaches that go on for a long time. Four days up to a week. Severe headaches lasting for a long time. Ferrum can have periodicity. Ferrum can be related to the menstrual period.

 You see the idea: there was the weight, the obesity, the arthritis, the sardines and the heat. Just a few points, but enough to go along with Ferrum iodatum. You see how easily you could prescribe Pulsatilla in this case. Against Pulsatilla goes that she was craving fat. Ferrum typically has aversion to eggs, but not always. And this is Ferrum iodatum, which doesn't even much have the aversion to eggs. Pulsatilla will crave eggs, especially hard-boiled eggs.

 The number-one remedy for craving pickles is Antimonium crudum (and for cucumbers).  But also you will see Sulphur, Sulphur iodatum, Hepar, Lachesis. You will see craving for mayonnaise quite often. I have seen it once in Pulsatilla. But I haven't found exactly what remedies stick to that. She has an aversion to fat, but mayonnaise is quite a lot of fat.

 A: Ptelea.

 R: It is really one of the main remedies for strong aggravation from cheese. They hate cheese and fats. They get bloated and diarrhoea, get pains in the liver etc. Strong aversion to fat (3).

 R: She is a woman with arthritis in the shoulders, neck and hand. The first remedy you think of in an old person with arthritis which is better from exertion, is Rhus tox. Rhus tox, perhaps then going to Calcarea. Better from exertion, you go away from Calcarea carbonica - which is worse from exertion. She is also worse as the day goes on, something that Calcarea carbonica will say, but also Rhus tox can say the same thing: they will say that they are better from motion, but they wear out.

R: Ptelea is a remedy mostly affected in the liver and the intestines. She is waking refreshed, a very strong sign against liver problems. She is relatively healthy. With liver problems you almost always expect gas and fermentation and very common is craving for either alcohol or sweets with liver problems. But she doesn't have any of these characteristics. You don't expect the liver to be very much affected and, despite the aversion to fat and aggravation of cheese, Ptelea is not a remedy that covers arthritic problems very well.

R: Pulsatilla? She is chilly and better from heat with the arthritis. Pulsatilla is better from cold. She does have the aversion to fat and craving for cheese, which is common for Pulsatilla, but ...

A: Ferrum: numbness, better from motion.

 R: Cataract, Calcarea fluorica is one of the main remedies for that. The first remedy I think of when I see very severe or early cataract, is Calcarea fluorica.

 R: Aggravation from eggs, the food cravings are somewhere in all of these remedies. Strong tendency to indigestion from eggs: Colchicum, Ferrum and China arsenicosum should be there (add it).

 V: Fears of darkness. Desires spicy food, milk, soft eggs and sweets. "My hands and feet are cold. I wear socks to bed and in the middle of the night, I take my socks off."

 N: Aurum cleared the case and now a beautiful Calcarea is there. Calcarea worked beautifully; she has done really well.

 A: Sleeplessness from grief: Natrum muriaticum, Ignatia, Kali bromatum.

 N: She is so emotional, that she doesn't have control. (Arsenicum wants to control in anything that makes her anxious.) In-between she laughs. She has extreme ups and downs, emotionally. Ignatia has a little of rage and so does Natrum muriaticum.

 A: Nux vomica: impatience and anger.

 A: Psorinum: eruptions and despair.

 N: Aurum. The aggravation at night is on the emotional level. Mostly despair at night. Sleepless at night and worse. The only thing that relieves is music. This is the strongest symptom in the case. Deep despair, grief. So much pain, she wants to get out. Violence. Aurum will think: "I am so good, how can anyone leave me!" Suicidal  thoughts, but not seriously in this case. Grief + worse at night, during sleep + amelioration from music + very much in love, idealistic: Aurum.

A: Ignatia: grief, sleeplessness, intolerance to contradiction, she sighs.

 N: Ignatia will have the most bitterness. Ignatia won't be so violent.

 N: A great reaction to being left: Aurum, Ignatia, Natrum muriaticum.

 N: This is absolutely a classical thing for Aurum to do. When they feel the grief, they work. They push themselves really hard and they achieve more and more and more. Outside you can't see anything going on. But inside they are extremely sensitive and especially to criticism. They really can't tolerate any criticism. They are absolutely perfectionist. They want to do things in the very best possible way. If someone criticizes them they will just say: "Oh thank you, I appreciate that.", and they go off and feel remonstrated by it.

 V: After the grief she just threw herself into work and became very organized.

 N: That way she is indus

 N: Particulary Aurum teenagers are compulsively praying for hours and hours.

 N: An other way they do it (suicide) is by driving a car, they are driving and then they get upset and angry. Then they have the strong compulsion to just drive into a wall.

N: Aurum females tend to be somewhat unfeminine. Often they don't have children. Businessworld women. Passionate inside but cold and dead outside.

N: Pulsatilla and Ignatia have more femininity. Aurum and Natrum muriaticum will have long periods without relationship. They want it so much. Staphisagria, Pulsatilla and Ignatia: more relationships and in the relationship they complain about it.

N: A few confirmatory points for Aurum:

 Suicidal depression with outburst of temper.

 Religious obsession, praying obsessively.

 Strong outburst of temper. Complaints from grief.

 Fear of heart disease. Cardiac disorders.

 Physical complaints better in the evening.

 Emotional complaints worse in the evening.

 Undescended testicles, a keynote for Aurum.

 Headache with boring pain, in the right inner corner of the eye.

 Better from music. Sensitivity to pain. Moaning in sleep.

There are remedies I think of when they come in and the first thing they start talking about is their work: Nux vomica and Aurum. Usually people talk more about relationships, feelings, physical problems. But Nux vomica and Aurum talk about their work because it is the centre of their life.

 N: With the suicidal depression, the seriousness, the industrious aspect of the case, we think strongly of Aurum and strongly of Natrum muriaticum. But there is a particular remedy that has this particular symptom: palpitations at night, sleeplessness from palpitations: Aurum muriaticum.

 N: Aurum muriaticum:

 The aurum part.

 The muriaticum part also.

 Suicidal depression.

 Haemorrhaging at menopause.

 Keynote: warts on the tongue.

 Pain in the tibia.

N: Aurum muriaticum kalinatum:

 Uterine haemorrhage. When you see uterine haemorrhage in general, think of this aurum.

 N: Aurum muriaticum natronatum:

 Uterine fibroids are a keynote.

 Boring pain, but in the left eye.

 Aurum case plus fibroids, give this remedy. Keynote is the strong thing, when you have an Aurum case plus fibroids.

 Induration of the uterus.

 N: Aurum sulphuratum:

 Aurum and Sulphur, with the redness of the orifices - the sulphur kind of area.

 Constant nodding of the head is an indication for this remedy.

Natrum muriaticum: the grief, the sensitivity, the closeness, the romantic problems.

 Silicea: she is a sort of a delicate type, so you can see how Silicea was given.

Psorinum: if you put together the idea of rash, eczema, severe depression and suicidal feelings, you will think of Psorinum.

R: So this was a case where we don't have a clear picture, we have a strong symptomatology from the past which fits for Hyoscyamus: she was ecstatic (joyful excitement), she was having religious delusions, she was talking a lot, she was dancing, taking off her clothes, the symptom of the restless fingers.

 I have had cases like this where the parents say: "Well there was a funny thing, whenever he had he asthma he wanted to get down on his hands and knees on the floor." Medorrhinum! So you can do that in these circumstances.

 N: A thirty-eight-year-old male who has extreme anxiety. With this impending sense of doom, very pessimistic, very negative. When you hear this kind of very negative, very strong 'everything is going to go bad' what do you think of?

 A: Nitricum acidum.

 N: But then, there is not so much anxiety about health.

N: Coffea has thoughts, but more thoughts of happy things. Coffea is not the deep serious, heavy thoughts. It is: "Oh I am going to meet a friend tomorrow" and anticipation and joy. Or they had something good happen to them and they wake all night, thinking about that. Which remedies wake with anxiety in the night?

 A: Arsenicum!

 N: Very conscious of how things look on him. The colour of his hair, he is white and he colours his hair and beard so he will look younger. What is the main remedy for tremendous awareness of how they look?

 A: Baryta carbonica.

 N: Baryta carbonica is very concerned about their appearance. "I must be just right, so that I look normal." The other remedy that wants to look normal and be normal like other people, but often more in the thoughts than in the dress is Thuja. They want to sound like other people and seem like other people, because they feel inside they are so different.

N: Arsenicum for being neat and perfect.

 N: Isolates himself. "I don't like dealing with things, so no one can bother me." What remedies?

 A: Natrum muriaticum, Aurum, Sepia.

 N: Sepia isolate themselves, they don't want anyone bothering them.

 N: Fear of intimacy, fear of relationship. Prefer lover to be blind, to not see me. This is a kind of deep introversion. It is more than a lack of self-confidence (like in Lycopodium).

 A: Think of Natrum muriaticum?

 N: Anacardium has the tremendous lack of self-confidence and a hardness, but not this exact kind of quality of intimacy.

 N: The main remedy that never sleeps on his back is Sulphur, because of nightmares.

N: Mercurius has a fear of his own impulses. This is what is behind his anger and his fear of confrontation. He is deeply afraid of his own inner violence, that it is just going to come out. They have the impulses to stab, the impulses to kill. And he is held within, so repressed.

 Also the trembling and the hurry. Mercurius is a very big remedy for this, all kinds of hurry. Suspicion.

 A very strong, clear Arsenicum picture.

 The restlessness. The sipping.

 The wanting company. The extreme anxiety. The suicidal thoughts.

 The temperature is unimportant, it is not an issue at this point. He was telling very clearly that he was at the end of the line, he couldn't take it any more. He was weeping and hysterical in the office. He came in with his sister, trembling and weeping and pacing, he couldn't sit down.

R: Waking at 2 - 3 a.m.  What is the main remedy with that symptom?

 A: Kali carbonicum.

 R: She has to get up out of bed and walk around. Arsenicum gets up and paces. Also Kali carbonicum very frequently has to get up out of bed at night. It is a keynote for Kali carbonicum. With the back pain, the kidney, the asthma: they have to get up out of bed at night and move around. The magnesias may have that as well.

R: Cold food aggravation in diarrhoea?

 A: Arsenicum.

 R: Arsenicum is the main remedy.

A: Natrum sulphuricum: asthma, worse at night, colitis, worse in wet weather.

 A: Dulcamara: diarrhoea, worse from cold food, worse from damp weather.

 A: Lachesis: sleeps right side, headaches worse from sun, doesn't forgive easily.

 R: What is the main remedy that has asthma 2 - 3 a.m. , that has to get up, that is worse from cold and damp, that may have or not have colitis and who is a person that respects people who do what they say?

 A: Kali carbonicum and Kali arsenicosum.

 R: We know that kalis are chilly. Arsenicum is chilly. She is not chilly. We want perhaps a kali to cover this and we want a warm kali. So: Kali sulphuricum, Kali iodatum and Kali nitricum.

 * Kali iodatum, time aggravation is usually around 5 a.m.

 * Kali sulphuricum, sticking the feet out. Although Kali sulphuricum is not one of the remedies that we know for putting the feet out of the covers.

 * Kali nitricum, time aggravation around 3 a.m.  Strong desire for fat. And we see strong symptoms of Nitricum acidum: unmoved by apologies. The nitrics have a strong tendency for colitis and diarrhoeas. So this was a case for Kali nitricum.

RM Yes, and anything that makes him feel more walledin, it symbolically represents to him what's his chief problem. And why the fear of robbers? Somebody will break into the wall or break through the wall. That's why there's fear of robbers, dreams of robbers, delusions of robbers; all these things. Phosphorus, for example, has fear of the dark, of deep water and of death. Why those fears? Because the basic pathology of Phosphorus is that they have no limit. Just the opposite of Natrum muriaticum. Everything diffuses outwards. With the dark you can't see your boundaries, so when they are in the dark, they can't tell where they are. The same with death. Death is a leaving outward. This is what they fear. And deep water as well. It's these symbolisms. Arsenicum has a big fear of robbers, because they are avaricious, greedy. They are afraid somebody will take from them something that they want. And also because the greed, the avarice, it's symbolically that they like to rob from somebody else. So sometimes the fear is symbolic of what's wrong with the patient himself.

Other times the fear is a sign of an impulse that the patient has. For example, Stramonium has fear of being murdered. Why? Because they want to murder. They have fear of animals. Why? Because of the animal inside of them. Aurum has a fear of heights because they have the impulse to jump and because they have the fear of failure. The height is where they are turning to and they have the fear that they will not be able to stay at the height. Lachesis has the fear of poison, because they would like to poison somebody. Argentum nitricum has the fear of hurting their family, because they have the impulse. So sometimes the fear is a reflection of an inner impulse, or it can be symbolic of the basic problem.

* E.g.  all natrums produce a tremendous tendency towards fever blisters and canker sores around the mouth.

 * Nitricum acidum.

 * Benzoicum acidum.

 * Natrum carbonicum.

 * Calcarea carbonica.

 * Magnesia carbonica.

 * Carbo vegetabilis.

 * Carbo animalis.

 * Graphitis.

* Kali arsenicosum strongest anxiety.

 * Kali carbonicum strong anxiety.

 * Kali phosphoricum can be quite anxious, to say the least.

* Kali iodatum the hottest.

 * Kali sulphuricum also quite warm.

 * Kali nitricum also quite warm.

 * Kali phosphoricum is between here, not so chilly.

 * Kali carbonicum to the chilly side.

 * Kali bichromicum even more chilly usually.

 * Kali arsenicosum quite chilly.

- Aggravation at night, especially:

 * Kali arsenicosum, Kali bichromicum more around midnight, or 1 a.m.

 * Kali carbonicum 2 a.m.  especially and 2 till 4 a.m.  quite strong.

 * Kali nitricum 3 a.m.
