CASES

 CASE1

Tuberculinum bovinum kent

 - Boy, 21/2 years old

 - Here it deals with a remedy which is very badly represented in the Repertory.

 - There are some remedies which we hardly can find only with the Repertory, and this is one of the remedies.

 - This means that there are a lot of additions on the base of experiences.

 - In practice we saw this and that case and therefore we know that the place of lung diseases in this remedy usually is the left apex of the lung, it is a more left sided remedy.

 - We have this and many other additions from our practice which are not in the Repertory.

 - This is a German patient, his father is also a doctor, I think a gynecologist.

 - After his son was cured he called me and asked me whether he could send some patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

 - All right, this is about his child.

 - A : What is his problem?

 - FP : Every 6 to 8 weeks he gets a sinusitis or a cold in the nose and cough.

 - The acute state was treated with PADIATROCIN, because the fever went up to 40o.

 - Then the cold went away.

 - After a few days he got a tonsillitis, again with 40o.

 - Again, he had to be treated with antibiotics.

 - The pediatrician wanted to treat it without antibiotics, but he couldn't, because he also got a otitis media and a rattling bronchitis, which had to be auscultated and again he had to take antibiotics.

 - 10 days AMPICILLIN, then everything was all right.

 - A little while later we flew to the South of France.

 - At the Cote d'Azur there was quite a lot of sun, but also a lot of wind and after some days suddenly he started to mumble.

 - The tonsils were enlarged in a few days, but he had only subfebrile temperature.

 - If you look at the child you see that it is a blond child, with a bright complexion, an active, lively child with very lively eyes., You could see these eyes, for example, in Calcarea children.

 - These are also children with a bright complexion, but the difference with this boy is that Calcarea children have a larger head and you see a weakness in these children on the physical level.

 - This is not the case.

 - He is rather hyperactive, very active and strong on the physical level.

 - Second we hear a story of recurrent tonsillitis, otitis media, coryza and swollen tonsils.

 - Of which remedy do you have to think first in swollen tonsils?

 - Answer : "Of Baryta carbonica."

 - A : Yes, Baryta carbonica is one of the most important remedies if we see such tonsils.

 - And what is peculiar in the observation of the tonsils in Baryta carbonica?

 - Answer : "They touch each other."

 - A : Yes, they touch each other, but there are a lot of remedies.

 - If you look closely at the tonsils of Baryta carbonica you see veins, dilated veins on the tonsils.

 - You will find this under throat, "varicosis, tonsils" on page 470.

THROAT, VARICOSIS,Tonsils : Bar-c., bar-m., ham., lach.

 - There is another remedy with these very strong swollen tonsils and a chronic discharge from the ears.

 - It is known for the chronicity of the disease, the chronic discharge from the ears, together with the very strong swollen tonsils, that they nearly touch each other, it is which remedy?

 - Answer : "..." (not understandable)

 - A : No, it is not this remedy.

 - It is Kali muriaticum.

 - If you already gave Silicea, Calcarea, Thuja and Tuberculinum and so on, and the patient isn't cured yet, you should think of Kali muriaticum.

 - In the Repertory there is a big mistake, namely - in all the rubrics, where there is Kali chloratum, it should be Kali muriaticum.

 - If you look, for example, under throat in the rubric, "inflammation, follicular" on page 454 you see Kali chloratum.

 - Kali chloratum has two important points and first it is the stomatitis with very deep ulcers in the mouth, and second the acute Nephritis with hemoglobinuria and so on.

 - The right remedy for this kind of tonsillitis, the follicular tonsillitis, is Kali muriaticum.

 - In the Repertory they mixed up the two remedies and this mistake is all through the Repertory.

 - You should study Kali muriaticum in Boericke and then you can correct everything.

 - FP : The HNO doctor tried it again without antibiotics, but it was impossible.

 - He could hardly swallow, he was snoring, he could hardly breathe.

 - First he tried it with PADIATROCIN, 10 days.

 - No result.

 - Then again with CEPHALOSPORAN.

 - 10 days long, and then the swelling slowly disappeared, the breathing and the swallowing improved, but it is not all right yet.

 - Constantly subfebrile temperatures until 38o

 - This is very typical.

 - Subfebrile temperature means a lack of reaction in the child.

 - The temperature increases only until WC, it is too low.

 - If the fever goes high you might be satisfied, then the resistance power of the child is very good.

 - If the temperature in an appendicitis increases only until 37o, 38o then you have to be careful because there is a danger of a perforation.

 - FP : We were always very quick with the therapy of antibiotics because we wanted to be careful.

 - When he was 1/2 year old he got convulsions.

 - Therefore we were anxious that the temperature would really increase.

 - Do you see how the child tries to make contact with me? He wants to play, he is provoking me, so that I would react.

 - He loves the activity.

 - FP : Further he had a phimosis operation then.

 - A few weeks before!, he had a pneumonia.

 - So this is the history of the disease.

 - Further he is a very cheerful and lively child who enjoys things and horses, around.

 - A : Always lively?

 - MP : Yes, very.

 - Obstreperous.

 - FP : Yes, in fact a little bit hyperkinetic, but only a little bit.

 - This hyperkinesis is one of the main mental symptoms of this, remedy.

 - There are some other hyperkinetic remedies, and which is according to you the most important? Which is the most important hyperkinetic?

 - Answer : "Tarentula."

 - A : Tarentula, yes, together with maliciousness.

 - And a second hyperkinetic remedy is which? A child, with the same appearance as this child, blond, very active, very thirsty, very, very thirsty, desire ice cream and so on.

 - Answer : "Veratrum."

 - A : Yes, Veratrum.

 - Veratrum album, lets say the most positive remedy of the restless remedies with this very strong projectile vomiting since birth.

 - All right, Veratrum, Tarentula - another remedy?

 - Answer : "Agaricus."

 - A : Agaricus? In children?

 - No, Stramonium.

 - Stramonium children are also very active children, maybe not so restless as in the two other remedies, but at least as malicious as in Tarentula.

 - If the parents describe their child as hyperkinetic first you have to think of Tuberculinum, Veratrum album, Tarentula and Stramonium, these four remedies.

 - Then there is another hyperkinetic remedy which is moving constantly, but completely directed to themselves, autistic, and this is?

 - Bufo.

 - Bufo children are the most hyperkinetic children but they don't communicate with the surrounding.

 - A : Tell me something about the diseases in your family.

 - What kind of disease did your father or mother have?

 - FP : My father was a gynecologist.

 - He died of a heart infarct, my mother had Hodgkin's disease.

 - If you hear this kind of story, that the mother had Hodgkin's disease (Hodgkin's lymphoma, cells in the lymphatic system grow abnormally and may spread beyond the lymphatic system. ) , a lymphatic disease, of which remedy do you have to think first?

 - I won't tell you now, you will see it later on.

 - FP : She died of this disease or possibly of a paralysis as a consequence of the radiation.

 - They don't know exactly.

 - A : And the brothers and sisters of your parents?

 - FP : The brother of my father also had a disease of sclerotic vessels.

 - On my mother's side I can't tell you anything, her brothers died in war or of appendicitis.

 - A : And the parents of your wife?

 - MP : My parents are healthy.

 - FP : My father-in-law has hypertension, but further he is healthy.

 - My mother-in-law is also a person who already had a operation of the maxillary sinus and had problems with the ears.

 - Besides the sinusitis and the maxillary sinuses have been a problem for my father and for me and my wife.

 - A : What does he like to drink?

 - FP : Orange juice.

 - MP : And tea, camomille tea.

 - FP : Or very weak peppermint tea.

 - A : Does he like cold or warm drinks?

 - FP : Both.

 - A : What does he like to eat, what doesn't he like? Tell me something about his eating habit.

 - FP : Bread, 1 or 2 kinds of sausages, mild veal sausages.

 - What else? Marmelade.

 - MP : Apple, especially bananas, potatoes, apple sauce.

 - He likes to eat soft things.

 - A : Does he like everything or is he fastidious?

 - FP : He doesn't eat what he doesn't know.

 - When he tries it and it tastes good then he will enjoy eating this.

 - He is a real sensualist.

 - A : What kind of meat does he like to eat?

 - FP : I would say light meat, like veal, so that he doesn't have difficulties in chewing.

 - I would say it this way.

 - A : What about sausages?

 - FP : He just likes mild sausages.

 - He doesn't like sharp sausages.

 - This means that he likes sausages, but not every kind of sausages.

 - "I like only this meat, not this one, no, only this!"

 - Where do we find this in the Repertory?

 - Under "delicacies", he is fastidious.

 - In the rubric "desire delicacies" on page 485

STOMACH,DESIRE,delicacies : Aur., bufo., calc., Chin., cub., cupr., Ip., kali-c., mag-c., nat-c., petr., psor., rhus-t., sabad., sang., spong., Tub.

we see three capital remedies : China, Ipecacuanha and Tuberculinum; also Calcarea is there.

 - Does anybody know, Ipecacuanha?

 - What is peculiar in this remedy?

 - Answer : "..." (not understandable)

 - A : Nausea, all the time nausea, even after vomiting.

 - And what is typical in the bronchitis of Ipecacuanha?

 - It is one of the most important remedies in asthma and bronchitis of children.

 - What is typical?

 - First the nausea with?

 - Answer : "Vomiting."

 - A : Yes, vomiting, but vomiting has so many remedies.

 - The child vomits, but what else?

 - Answer : "He doesn't improve."

 - A : Yes, it doesn't help, but what else?

 - Answer : "A clean tongue."

 - A : A clean tongue, yes, right, that is typical.

 - Notwithstanding the nausea and the vomiting the tongue is not coated.

 - Which other remedy has this also?

 - Cina.

 - And what is the contrary of Ipecacuanha? I mean children who suddenly vomit without any nausea?

 - Ferrum.

 - Ferrum in white, transparent children who vomit, as if they empty a sack.

 - This white, waxy appearance is also called Chlorosis.

 - A : Does he like hamburger?

 - FP : He never ate hamburger.

 - A : Does he like milk?

 - FP : Not so much.

 - If he drinks milk, he drinks it cold.

 - MP : But little.

 - Sometimes he eats a little bit of yogurt.

 - Normally, these children like to drink milk, but it has to be cold.

 - Another remedy which likes cold milk is?

 - Answer : "Phosphorus."

 - A : Yes, Phosphorus.

 - And which other remedy?

 - Answer : "Rhus toxicodendron."

 - A : Yes, Rhus toxicodendron, who wakes up at night, because they can't sleep anymore, get up, go to the refrigerator and drink cold milk.

 - All right, and another important remedy which we may not forget.

 - Answer : "Staphisagria.

 - A : Staphisagria, yes, Staphisagria in children.

 - What is important in Staphisagria children? Where do you have to look?

 - Answer : "At the teeth."

 - A : Yes, the caries of the teeth with fine black stripes.

 - A : What is the position of sleep?

 - MP : He lies on the left side.

 - A : He never lies on his abdomen?

 - MP : No.

 - A : Does he perspire during his sleep at night?

 - MP : Yes, very much.

 - FP : Especially at the beginning of the night.

 - MP : While falling asleep he perspires incredibly.

 - A : Where does he perspire?

 - MP : On the throat, on the head.

 - A : Not on the neck?

 - MP : Yes., And on the upper body.

 - So, this is the most important differential diagnosis.

 - In children who perspire on the neck during sleep the first remedy you have to think of is Calcarea carbonica, and this is the differential diagnosis.

 - This remedy also has exhausting sweat.

 - In the morning they are completely tired from perspiration.

 - Where can we find this? In which rubric?

 - 'Weakness, perspiration, from, night" on page 1418.

GENERALITIES,WEAKNESS,PERSIPERATION FROM,night : Ars., bar-c., bry., carb-an., chin., eupi., ferr., merc., samb., stann., tarax., Tub.

 - This is very important in lung diseases, chronic lung diseases, Crohn's disease, in many chronic diseases.

 - In the rubric there is also Ferrum, Baryta carbonica, Tuberculinum is capital and an addition is Kali iodatum (from Nash).

 - A : Does he like eggs?

 - FP : Yes, yes.

 - MP : Only the white part.

 - FP : He doesn't eat the yolk.

 - MP : Sometimes he eats a lot of the egg white.

 - It is interesting to note that he doesn't eat the yolk.

 - I don't understand, because it is also soft and it is easy to swallow.

 - But even the ceremony of sharing an egg cannot tempt him.

 - "Only the white", you see again the delicacy.

 - It is important that you notice this in these children.

 - A : (examines the child) He has swollen glands.

 - FP : Yes.

 - You always have to do this examination (palpation of the glands in the throat) in these children.

 - What am I looking for?

 - Enlarged cervical glands.

 - This remedy always has - no, "always" doesn't exist in Homoeopathy as well as "never" - so nearly always enlarged cervical glands.

 - Everybody knows where we can find this in the Repertory, it is not a problem, is it?

 - In external throat, glands, cervical.

 - Hodgkin's disease is also a disease of the glands, therefore we have to think of this remedy If you have somebody of the family with Hodgkin's disease or immediately in cases of Hodgkin's disease.

 - This remedy is also an important addition in leukemia.

 - In leukemia we nearly have all the Natrums, where emotional reasons are the cause; we have the 2 or 3 important psora remedies, Calcarea and Sulphur, and Kali phosphoricum.

 - We already talked about Kali phosphoricum : they are weak, tired after a cancer operation, they become so weak that the slightest work seems to be a big mountain.

 - Then the diarrhoea, when they start eating, the diarrhoea after supper, this is typical for Kali phosphoricum.

 - The perspiration on the neck you nearly always find in Calcarea children.

 - This perspiration is an indication for me to repeat the remedy.

 - If in a child with Osteogenesis imperfecta whom I gave Calcarea the perspiration in the cervical region, but only in the cervical region, not at other parts of the body starts again I have to repeat the remedy.

 - This means when the symptom of weakness appears again.

 - Calcarea carbonica has to be repeated often in children, as well as this remedy here.

 - A : At what age did he walk?

 - MP : At the age of 10 months.

 - He walked very early.

 - Do you know the remedy which learns to walk late? Which is the first remedy?

 - Answer : "Calcarea."

 - A : Yes, and also Natrum muriaticum.

 - These are children who are not able to coordinate their movements right, they don't know how to do it, this is Natrum muriaticum.

 - In Calcarea it is because of a physical weakness.

 - There is another remedy which learned to walk late, which all of us always forget, and this is Causticum.

 - It is important to know that Causticum learns to walk late, because it is not so easy to recognize Causticum in children.

 - Which is the biggest anxiety in Causticum children?

 - Anxiety for dogs.

 - And how do they look, the Causticum children? What kind of colour of hair do they normally have?

 - Dark.

 - In these children from birth on you see a kind of paralysis on the right side, the upper lid is a little bit lower and there is a kind of disproportion of the face.

 - Besides, often they are left-handed.

 - In general the right side of these children is not so well developed.

 - So he walked at the age of 10 months, this means that we can forget Calcarea.

 - FP : Besides the adenoids have been removed in the meantime.

 - A : Have the tonsils been removed as well?

 - FP : No, they haven't.

 - Polyps are always the result of a chronic inflammatory disease.

 - What happens if you remove the polyps? (Nasal polyps : They are common, noncancerous, teardrop-shaped growths that form in the nose or sinuses, usually around the area where the sinuses open into the nasal cavity.

) You take away the result of the disease but you don't touch the disease.

 - Why is this chronic inflammatory state there? Because of a weakness, and you have to treat this.

 - A : How is his behaviour when he has fever?

 - MP : He is tired and he has pain in the abdomen.

 - A : Does he talk when he has fever?

 - FP : No.

 - What did I expect? How are these children often with fever?

 - Answer : "..."(not understandable)

 - A : Talkative, Yes., Look in the Repertory under mind, "loquacity, heat, during" on page 63.

MIND,LOQUACITY,NIGHT,heat, during : Coff., lach., podo., stram., Teucr., tub.

 - Another remedy which also has this loquacity in fever is Teucrium.

 - Teucrium is a remedy for what?

 - For Polyps.

 - And at the other side of the body they have what?

 - Answer : "Worms."

 - A : Itching from worms.

 - Everybody knows ascarides means oxyuriasis.

 - Enterobius vermicularis are oxyuriasis and these are called ascarides in the Repertory.

 - A : He doesn't say anything when he has fever?

 - FP : No.

 - A : Does he have a very red head?

 - FP : No.

 - Why did I ask about the red head? Of which remedy did I think? Of Belladonna, because it is complementary to Calcarea.

 - A : Does he grind his teeth?

 - FP : Yes.

 - If somebody says so clearly "yes", then you notice that you are on the right way.

 - This gives you the courage to go on.

 - To prescribe a remedy without feeling anything, only in the head is not good.

 - You have to do with your heart also.

 - "Oh yes, exactly this is the right remedy! Call me in three days and tell me what happened!" This is Homoeopathy.

 - You get this only when you have studied hard, you have to work for it to get this feeling.

 - A : During sleep?

 - FP : Yes, but that is a long time ago.

 - A : When did you hear it the last time?

 - FP : A few months ago.

 - A : Does he sleep in your room?

 - FP : Since he was ill the last time.

 - Before he didn't.

 - A : Before how did you hear he was grinding teeth?

 - FP : When we entered his room at night we heard it by coincidence.

 - A : How many months ago?

 - MP : 3 to 4 months ago.

 - He slept very badly.

 - He woke up 8 to 10 times a night.

 - FP : But now it is better, isn't it?

 - MP : Yes., He still wakes up 1 or 2 times.

 - He is tossing about a lot.

 - FP : He is very active, also at night.

 - A : All right.

 - It is clear.

 - The waking up with a fright and the clinging to somebody is also Tuberculinum, just like which other remedy.

 - Where do we find this in the Repertory? And which is the other remedy?

 - Suddenly they wake up at night terrified, the mother comes to see and they cling to her.

 - I think Boericke described it; and where do we find this in the Repertory?

 - Under mind, Clinging, child awakens terrified, knows no one, screams, clings to those near" on page 12, there is only one remedy : Stramonium.

MIND,CLINGING TO PERSONS OR FURNITURE, child awakens terrified, knows no one, screams, clings to those near : Stram.

 - And Stramonium is a very important differential diagnosis with Tuberculinum, but Stramonium is more malicious than Tuberculinum.

 - Stramonium likes to hit others.

 - If a Stramonium boy with his mother is sitting in front of you and his sister is sitting next to him you see that suddenly he is pinching his sister and after a while he kicks her suddenly.

 - In the meantime he is very nice and friendly, but from time to time he has to do malicious things.

 - It is very difficult to differentiate Stramonium from another remedy which we usually give in very acute cases, but which we also gave constitutionally.

 - There are certain mental symptoms by which you can differentiate both remedies.

 - Which is the remedy?

 - Belladonna.

 - And how does it differentiate from Stramonium? By the anxiety in the dark.

 - Stramonium is capital in the rubric and Belladonna is not in the rubric at all.

 - Besides we had some cases with anxiety in the dark where the patients didn't react to Stramonium, but to Belladonna.

 - But I think that in general Belladonna does not have fear of dark, there are always exceptions.

 - A : How often is he ill?

 - FP : For a longtime he has been ill constantly, but before he wasn't.

 - Sometimes 1 or 2 days, but it always went away.

 - A : When was he really ill the last time?

 - FP : The last period was about 6 weeks ago.

 - MP : 8 to 9 weeks.

 - A : Is he tired easily?

 - MP : No, he plays about very much, he is very active.

 - FP : But he is not tired easily.

 - MP : At the moment he is.

 - FP : That's right, but otherwise he isn't.

 - This does not mean that he stops playing.

 - You just notice that he can't go on anymore.

 - A : All right.

 - I give you 2 tubes with each 2 tablets.

 - The tablets in the second tube are stronger.

 - First I give him a tablet and when he has problems you call me and then we decide what we do.

 - I'd like to see you again within a few months, even when he is doing fine to take it on video and to use it for the teaching to prove that he is better.

 - Also his hyperactivity has to improve.

 - It is always the same.

 - When they are ill they promise you all kinds of things, as long as you cure them, but then...

 - I begged him on my knees to come back once for the video, but he didn't have time.

 - I asked a doctor from the Centre to call him and to write down how the child was doing.

 - Do you know which remedy I gave?

 - Tuberculinum.

 Follow-up (after 1/2 year)

 - A : When were you here?

 - D : (Doctor) At the end of October 1987.

 - A : So at the end of October 1987 he was here and he lives at a distance of about 800 km.

 - He was called and begged to come back, but when the child is doing well they don't want to travel again.

 - Therefore the father was asked by telephone about the health of the child.

 - How did it develop?

 - D : The father told me that the temperature in the beginning went up and down.

 - In October the mother went to the sea with the child.

 - There he got again fever and got Tuberculinum 50M in dissolution.

 - After a while the temperature went down.

 - Tuberculinum can be better or worse at the sea, both are possible.

 - In Medorrhinum the sea ameliorates in 90%, in Carcinosin both are also possible, an amelioration and an aggravation.

 - Normally Natrum muriaticum has an aggravation at the sea, like all the other Magnesium's.

 - Brom has an amelioration at the sea or near the sea.

 - After he has been to the sea he got Tuberculinum once and the fever diminished very quickly afterwards.

 - A : The tonsils have become clearly smaller within half a year.

 - The father says that they are normal now.

 - In February the chronic infection of the bronchial tubes disappeared.

 - They went on holiday in Teneriffe and there he got coryza and a cough once.

 - When they came home they called me and according to the agreement they repeated the remedy in dissolution.

 - Then also the fever decreased very quickly.

 - The child didn't need antibiotics anymore.

 - In October he got NYSTATIN for the throat.

 - The father saw two pediatricians, he always goes to professors when there is something wrong.

 - Therefore he is not sure whether the child improved on the gargle medicine or on the homoeopathic remedy.

 - One week after the last administration of Tuberculinum he got swollen tonsils again.

 - The swelling decreased within a few days.

 - He didn't have an ear inflammation again.

 - Concerning the development of the child the father thinks that he probably has become more quiet.

 - He is not so hyperkinetic anymore.

 - He still perspired at night, especially on the head and on the neck, especially while failing asleep.

 - But it was also better for quite a while.

 - Now, it appeared again because of the swelling of the tonsils.

 - He didn't grind his teeth anymore.

 - His appetite has been better for a while.

 - He still likes the same things, chocolate, peas and potatoes with sausages, but only a certain kind of sausage.

 - He doesn't drink so much milk.

 - A : Cold milk?

 - D : He doesn't like milk so much at all.

 - He still wakes up at 1 : 00 or 2 : 00 o'clock at night, but there is nothing particular.

 - The development is good, he plays, he starts riding on a bike, to dress himself.

 - And his father also says that he feels very good without antibiotics.

 - A : Does he doubt about the action of the remedy?

 - D : Yes, he doubts about it.

 - A : The father is proctologist.

 - D : Yes., It was very difficult to get information about the child from the father, because he always mentioned clinical diagnoses and he always said, "Maybe it is better", "Maybe the fever went down because of this".

 - But in fact he doubts very much.

 - You see that you have to repeat the remedy in a relapse.

 - In one child it is after one month, in another child after two months, it is different.

 - Later on the fever and the swelling of the tonsils decreased spontaneously, without any remedy, this means that the resistance of the child has become stronger.

 - Question : "How often did he take this remedy?"

 - A : Three times.

 - Question : "..."(not understandable)

 - A : Yes, the second time it was 10M.

 - Or the first time I gave him 10M and then 50M.

 - I don't know it exactly anymore, it is not so important.

 - Remark : "Desires bananas."

 - A : Yes, desires bananas.

 - In the next cases you will see that the desire for bananas indicates Tuberculinum very strongly.

 - After teaching in Holland with 200 students at the end they all agreed that Tuberculinum should be added in the rubric "desires bananas".

 - The remedy which already is in this rubric and is also a remedy for tuberculosis, in acute, floride tuberculosis is Theridion.

 - Who knows the key-note of Theridion?

 - Answer : "Sensitive to noises."

 - A : Yes, they are sensitive to noises, but what is more typical?

 - Answer : "Pain in the teeth."

 - A : Yes, pain in the teeth.

 - They feel noises as a pain in the bones and in the teeth.

 - Besides it is a very important remedy in vertigo.

 - Where do we find in the Repertory the rubric for lung tuberculosis?

 - Under chest "phthisis, florida" on page 879.

CHEST,PHTHISIS,florida : Ferr., med., nat-p., puls., sang., Ther.

 - This is a clinical rubric, but it is very important.

 - There you see Ferrum, a very important remedy in acute tuberculosis.

 - What is typical for Ferrum, an important key-note in children?

 - Epistaxis.

 - Ferrum is the first remedy in nose bleeding in children.

 - Besides it is very important in septicemia and in upwards bladder infections, going to nephritis, with very high fever, together with pain in the liver and in the chest.

 - Where can we find this rubric?

 - Answer : "Inflammation of the kidneys."

 - A : No, not in inflammation.

 - (Many rubrics are mentioned, but none is right.)

 - A : No, none of these are right.

 - You find it under bladder, "urging, pain in liver, chest and kidneys, with".

 - You always find blood in the urine, pus, leucocytes and a constant urging with pain in the liver, kidneys and the chest.

 - Does everybody know the rubric for septicemia? It is in the generalities on page 1399.

 - All right, that for the phtisis florida, by which you certainly have to think about Ferrum.

 - Which is the biggest desire of Ferrum?

 - Answer : "Eggs."

 - A : Eggs? Oh no, on the contrary, they have an aversion.

 - They like tomatoes.

 - They eat tomatoes like Medorrhinum eats oranges.

 - But they can also have an aversion tomatoes, both are possible.

 - The desire for tomatoes only has two remedies, namely Ferrum and Ignatia.

 - All right, in phtisis florida we also see Medorrhinum and Natrum phosphoricum.

 - Which is the biggest desire of Natrum phosphoricum?

 - Answer : "Fried eggs."

 - A : Yes, that's right, everybody knows this in the meantime.

 - Also Pulsatilla and Sanguinaria.

 - Sanguinaria is a very important remedy and in this remedy we always find a combination of two peculiar things.

 - It is an important remedy in whooping cough with a very, very red face or just in cough with a very, very red face.

 - At a certain moment the cough becomes better, but something must happen, and what is this?

 - Eructation.

 - They cough and cough, they have to sit up and they are very, very red in the face.

 - I remember a case at 2 : 00 o'clock in the morning, where I didn't know what all this means, and then suddenly he had to eructate and the cough was better.

 - This is typical for Sanguinaria.

 - He was dark red in the face, therefore I thought of Belladonna, but because of the eructation it was Sanguinaria.

 - Now, I will show you some Tuberculinum cases with the same appearance, so that you have the Tuberculinum picture in the back of your mind.

 - If you have a child with a small neck, who is very pale, with blond hair, by whom you have the feeling of a lack of power, a tuberculosis, brittle child, you think of Tuberculinum immediately.

CASE2

 Recurrent bronchitis

 Tuberculinum bovinum kent

 - Boy, 6 years old

 - MP : This year he already had antibiotics four times, it was a little bit too much.

 - His grandmother gave it to him the whole time, because I am working.

 - He coughs and coughs and he starts coughing again.

 - He doesn't eat well.

 - His tonsils have been removed, but he just continues coughing.

 - He started coughing as soon as he had a draft of air.

 - After every draft of air he got a cold immediately.

 - This is very important.

 - I think Boericke writes : "...with the least cold they have a coryza."

 - A : You were here with the little sister and because her bronchitis cured so well you came with this boy.

 - He is still coughing, but not so bad as before.

 - Regularly he also had colds and had to take antibiotics every time, but he always relapses.

 - Also the removal of the tonsils didn't help, he still has bronchitis.

 - I want to give you some advice : the swelling of the tonsils is a reaction of the child.

 - Don't take away the possibility to react, don't cut the tonsils away.

 - Leave the tonsils and give them a remedy so that the tonsils become smaller.

 - When you take the tonsils away you make the child more ill.

 - A : He also easily had inflammations of the throat and it became better after the tonsillectomy.

 - But after the removal of the tonsils he got one bronchitis after the other.

 - In fact, it didn't help much.

 - MP : No, in fact not.

 - A : He looks like a very lively boy, is that right?

 - MP : Yes, he has too much energy.

 - He hardly sits still.

 - Do you see the playfulness in this child? He tries to play with his sister.

 - A Calcarea child would sit there very nice, but he tries to play.

 - In this child you see again this tenderness, the emaciation and the paleness, but in the eyes there is something lively.

 - A : He is also thin.

 - GM : (Grandmother) Yes, he was born too early.

 - He weighed only 1, 7 kg.

 - A : Is he sensitive to cold?

 - MP : Yes, especially to wind.

 - When it is a little bit windy and he was outside he gets a cold immediately.

 - A : What about his appetite?

 - GM : He doesn't eat.

 - He eats very badly, he eats only bananas constantly.

 - But further he has a very bad appetite.

 - Not so much meat.

 - In general they say that the children don't eat well and If you ask whether they don't eat at all the mother answers, 'Yes, when I give him chocolate he eats the whole time.

 - But further he doesn't eat anything at all.

 - Doctor, would you please give him something so that he eats better; you see how thin he is."

 - These children eat a lot, they burn quite a lot of energy, but he doesn't eat the things which the mother thinks he needs to get strong.

 - A : He doesn't like to eat meat?

 - GM : No, both of them don't like to eat meat.

 - A : No meat, W.

 - GM : No, not at all, well, just a little bit.

 - You have to mix everything.

 - A : Isn't there any kind of meat which he likes to eat? For example, bacon?

 - GM : No, in fact not.

 - A : What about chopped meat?

 - GM : Yes, he eats chopped meat.

 - A : And sausages?

 - GM : Not so much.

 - A : And bacon either?

 - GM : Do you like bacon?

 - P : Yes, sometimes.

 - GM : Well yes, it's not worth talking about.

 - He easily gets enough of it.

 - He doesn't eat much.

 - A : Pork either?

 - GM : No, not so much.

 - The parents of these children always tell you that their children don't like meat, just sausages, chopped meat, just these kind of things which you don't have to chew, hamburger and that kind of stuff.

 - Besides you always hear that they like pork and another kind of meat, together with Causticum and Calcarea phosphorica, namely, smoked meat.

 - A : Can you tell me something about his character?

 - GM : How shall I say? Wild, sometimes.

 - A : What do you mean?

 - GM : He always has to do dangerous things.

 - For him there is nothing else but his pistols, he goes to bed with his pistols, gets up with his pistols, and goes to school with his pistols.

 - When they ask in the shop what he likes, he always goes to the guns.

 - A : Do you have difficulties in handling him sometimes?

 - GM : No, some days, but that is not so bad.

 - There are also days, that he is very quiet.

 - A : (examines the cervical glands)

 - You always have to examine the glands.

 - In this remedy you always find some.

 - If there are enlarged glands in the occiput it is which remedy? Baryta carbonica.

 - In the rubric "head, swollen, glands, occiput" on page 232 Baryta carbonica is capital and Magnesia muriatica one.

HEAD, SWOLLEN glands of head,Occiput : Bar-c., mag-m.

 - Magnesia muriatica are according to Vithoulkas the peacemakers.

 - And how is their pain? By what are they ameliorated?

 - Usually it is temporal pain which are ameliorated by a strong pressure.

 - And they have liver problems.

 - A : May I see the back?

 - Why do I want to see the back?

 - To see whether he has hair on the back.

 - In Tuberculinum children you often see hair on the back, more hair than in another child.

 - A : Does he easily perspire?

 - MP : Yes, when he is sleeping.

 - Sometimes I think it is because of the eiderdown, but he is always very wet, especially here in the hair, they are wet through.

 - And also on the back he perspires enormously, especially when he sleeps.

 - I don't know whether it is because of the eiderdown, but he also perspires when he sleeps with his grand mother.

 - A : Where does he perspire in particular?

 - GM : Here, at the head, and here at the back.

 - A : What does he like to eat, because he doesn't like meat?

 - GM : Quite a lot of chocolate, I have to hide the chocolate.

 - Sweet things and biscuits, sweet biscuits and things like that.

 - He is mad about sweet things.

 - And bananas, he wants to eat bananas every day.

 - A : Also sweet things.

 - How does he lie in bed?

 - GM : On his side.

 - A : On which side?

 - GM : Often he lies crossways in bed, A few times he slept with me in my bed, and when I went to bed he was lying completely diagonally in bed.

 - He is turning very much.

 - He lies in bed then this way, then that way.

 - You can't sleep with him.

 - He is always kicking.

 - He is turning very much and he is kicking.

 - He kicks so much during sleep so that his sister doesn't want to sleep with him anymore.

 - I just see the way he bores into his nose, that's why I think of Ipecacuanha.

 - Where does Ipecacuanha put his finger?

 - Answer : "In the mouth."

 - A : Yes, they have their finger in the mouth.

 - Symptoms which you can observe are very valid symptoms.

 - What people tell you you can often doubt, but you don't have to doubt about what you see yourself.

 - Do you have the additions for this rubric? "Mouth, fingers in the mouth, children put" on page 405,

MOUTH,FINGERS in the mouth, children put : Calc., cham., Ip.

the additions are : Lycopodium, Tarentula, Calcarea phosphorica, Silicea, Medorrhinum, Natrum muriaticum and Zincum.

 - He bores in his nose, there are a lot of remedies.

 - Which remedy is very important?

 - Arum triphyllum.

 - Arum triphyllum in coryza, in excoriating coryza with bleeding.

 - And which remedy bores in the nose and here (at the anus)?

 - Answer : "Cina."

 - A : Yes, Cina.

 - Question : "Do you also have additions here?"

 - A : In boring nose? No, I don't have additions, there are already a lot of remedies.

 - In which position does Cina sleep? In the knee elbow position.

 - Remark : "And on the abdomen."

 - A : Yes, also on the abdomen, but especially in the knee elbow position.

 - Like which other remedies?

 - Like Medorrhinum.

 - A : Is he anxious?

 - GM : No, not particularly.

 - Only for dogs.

 - Oh, I have to tell you.

 - You are very afraid of dogs, aren't you?

 - Are you afraid of dogs?

 - If they tell you spontaneously that they are afraid of dogs you have to think of Tuberculinum immediately, but there is still another remedy, which...

 - Answer : "Belladonna."

 - A : Yes, Belladonna also.

 - Answer : "Causticum."

 - A : Yes, Causticum also.

 - Answer : "Stramonium."

 - A : Yes, Stramonium is also there, also Hyoscyamus, but there is another important addition.

 - Which remedy has urging when they are washing their hands or when they hear running water? This is Lyssinum.

 - Add this in the rubric "anxiety for dogs", it is very important.

 - Further important additions are Carcinosin, Calcarea carbonica, Natrum muriaticum and Pulsatilla.

 - A : Is he afraid of spiders or mice?

 - GM : No.

 - A : So, he is kicking in his sleep.

 - "Kicks, sleep, in" on page 60

MIND,LICKS,sleep, in : Bell., cina., sulph.

 : Belladonna, Cina, Sulphur.

 - Additions are Tuberculinum, Natrum carbonicum and Phosphorus.

 - Natrum carbonicum is a very important remedy for a sun~ stroke, together with which other remedy?

 - Glonoin.

 - Glonoin with pulsations everywhere.

 - A : Is there something else which is remarkable during sleep?

 - GM : He doesn't lie still.

 - He is really restless during sleep, then he wants this, then he wants that.

 - The sister confirms it.

 - In this child as well as in the other child you see the waking up frequently of Tuberculinum.

 - A child who slept very well the whole time, one day he is frightened and afterwards he wakes up frequently.

 - This is which remedy?

 - Answer : "Silicea."

 - A : Yes, Silicea.

 - "Anxiety from a fright and anxiety from noises, If you compare these two rubrics you see Aconitum and Silicea in both rubrics, but Silicea is the first remedy, has especially this symptom that the child can't sleep anymore, when it has been frightened once in his sleep by a sudden, loud noise.

 - A : Is he very thirsty?

 - GM : Yes, he drinks quite a lot.

 - A : What does he drink?

 - GM : Everything, cola, milk, lemonade.

 - Also less cola because I don't buy it anymore because it is not so good.

 - But he drinks very much milk.

 - A : Warm milk?

 - GM : No, it always has to be cold milk.

 - (His sister says that he always drinks warm chocolate milk).

 - A : Did you sleep with him?

 - GM : Yes.

 - A : Did you ever hear him grinding his teeth?

 - GM : No, I never heard it.

 - What can you observe on the forehead of this child? What does he do the whole time?

 - (The patient frowns his forehead often)

 - "Frown, disposed to" on page 50.

MIND,FROWN, disposed to : Hell., lyc., mang., nux-v., stram.

 - Tuberculinum is not in the rubric.

 - You don't have to add it either, but we can observe it.

 - A : When he lies in bed does he lie still or does he always turn his head?

 - GM : Oh, he rolls his head very much.

 - He really does.

 - So, to and fro, before he falls asleep.

 - Then he turns his head in all directions.

 - He does it a few times, but he doesn't do it a long time.

 - Where do we find the rolling of the head?

 - The child lies in the bed and rolls his head to and fro.

 - "Head, motions of head, rolling head" on page 131 there are two capital remedies, Belladonna and Tuberculinum.

 - A : He always sleeps on his side, doesn't he?

 - GM : Yes, usually on the side, never on the abdomen.

 - A : The mother is healthy and also the father.

 - Are there certain diseases in the family?

 - M : Nothing besides migraine.

 - A : The grandmother has been in treatment here for migraine for quite a long time and now she wants to come back because the eldest daughter has leukemia and since then she got the migraine again.

 - The daughter, so the sister of this woman, the aunt of this child has leukemia.

 - This is also Tuberculinum.

 - A : How long ago were you here?

 - GM : A long time ago, then I have been seen by another colleague.

 - I was here in 1985, but then you were at a seminar.

 - The grandmother is rather loquacious.

 - Of which remedy can you think of?

 - Of Lachesis.

 - GM : (says something about the neighbours)

 - A : Does he have fear of dark?

 - MP : No, not so much.

 - In fact, he doesn't have fear of dark.

 - I don't have to leave on the light.

 - His grandmother wants the light to be on.

 - GM : Yes, yes, I always have to leave the light on.

 - We always did this before.

 - It is a habit.

 - MP : But I don't want it either.

 - A : Now we have to take care that he will become healthy.

 - GM : Yes, the cough is really very annoying, especially at night.

 - This exhausts everybody.

 - A : He is very thirsty?

 - GM : Yes, yes, he drinks very much.

 - At night he often wakes up and then he says, 'I'm thirsty."

 - Thirst at night, which remedy is capital? Silicea.

 - A : Are there other diseases in the family?

 - GM : No, only migraine, and we all suffer from, it.

 - I have seven daughters and all of them suffer from migraine.

 - The grandmother, the aunts and the sisters, all of them suffer from migraine.

 - We really get attacks of migraine with trembling and flickering before the eyes., I have to lie down and can't do anything at all.

 - A : Does he often want to drink at night?

 - MP : Twice, three times, but not every night.

 - A : That is a lot.

 - The mother has migraine and before an attack she has flickering before the eyes., Could you prescribe the right remedy for the mother?

 - You know in loquaciousness and flickering before the eyes in headache there is one remedy which she needs.

 - "Vision, flickering, headache, during" on page 279.

 - Which remedy is it?

 - Lachesis.

 - So, now we can give the mother a present and we can say to her, "All right, madam, you take this remedy and your migraine will disappear."

 - A : He is rather restless, he can't sit still easily.

 - MP : Yes, yes, he is very restless.

 - A : Do his nails easily break off?

 - MP : No.

 - A : Is he very sensitive towards cold?

 - MP : No, in fact not.

 - He is rather too warm.

 - When I want him to put on a pullover he gets annoyed, he becomes angry.

 - He doesn't want to put on these things.

 - A : Is he fantasizing much?

 - MP : Yes, very much.

 - It is terrible.

 - GM : Yes, very, very much.

 - In school he is telling the teacher that we have a very big dog at home, although we don't have a dog at all.

 - Then he is fantasizing.

 - A : Does he like to eat fruit?

 - MP : Yes, yes, especially oranges and bananas.

 - A child with very much fantasy, who likes to eat fruit is Veratrum.

 - Veratrum has quite a lot of fantasy and asks quite a lot of questions, where God is, about the stars, about the moon and things like that.

 - But also Tuberculinum has quite a lot of fantasy.

 - Sister : Lately he ate many, many oranges.

 - GM : He can be very sweet.

 - A : (To the mother) Is he very sweet? Do you think so?

 - MP : Sometimes I think it would be better, when he would lie in bed.

 - Sometimes he is very difficult, for example, while eating.

 - When he comes home from school he eats with my husband.

 - We eat only at 4 : 00 o'clock, but he doesn't want to eat with us at all.

 - All right that is enough.

 - You saw the child, you heard about the restlessness, the desires are there, the rolling with the head, the enlarged glands and the face of the child fits, so he got Tuberculinum.

 - Remark : "But once I saw that the boy was pulling his hair first, and afterwards his sister's."

 - A : Yes, he was pulling his hair.

 - Remark : "This is a Tuberculinum symptom."

 - A : Is this in the Repertory? Pulling hair?

 - Remark : "It is not in the Repertory, it is an addition from P.

 - Schmidt."

 - A : Oh Yes., If you observe very closely, for example, the frowning of the head, the boring in the nose, the pulling of the hair, then you already have quite a lot of indications for Tuberculinum.

 Follow-up

 - A : I gave him the remedy on March 7, now it is April.

 - You came here because he always had a cold with coryza.

 - Now, he fell asleep.

 - Tell me how was the reaction to the remedy.

 - MP : He didn't cough anymore.

 - Nothing at all.

 - Until 2, 3 days ago, then he started coughing at night again.

 - I didn't hear him coughing during the day.

 - A : So up to then you didn't hear him coughing anymore?

 - MP : No, only the last 2,3 nights, a little bit.

 - But further I didn't hear anything.

 - A : This was a good reaction.

 - MP : Yes, I think so.

 - A : Because before he got a cold regularly?

 - MP : Yes.

 - A : He doesn't have complaints with the cold anymore?

 - MP : No, nothing.

 - A : He also had a wild character.

 - Do you think something has changed?

 - MP : Nothing particular.

 - He is active.

 - When he is awake he is very active.

 - A : Does he sleep well now?

 - MP : Yes, very well.

 - A : You told me that he always wanted to do dangerous things, is this still so?

 - MP : Yes, it is still so.

 - A : He dares to do many things?

 - MP : Yes.

 - A : Do you think the restlessness is as strong as before or do you think it has improved?

 - MP : Not in particular, it is the same.

 - A : Do you have to complain about it?

 - MP : No.

 - A : I will give you a tablet in a tube to take home and for the time being you don't do anything at all, you just call me when you have problems.

 - All right, he sleeps better, doesn't cough anymore.

 - When he has a relapse we will wait a few days and when we see that he doesn't cure by himself we will repeat Tuberculinum.

CASE3

 Recurrent cough

 Tuberculinum bovinum kent

 - Boy, 5 years old

 - A : He always had a cold.

 - VP : It was really very bad, he got a cold with the slightest draft of air.

 - Then I came here and the tablet he got helped him very much.

 - He keeps strictly to the rules, he doesn't drink cola or anything.

 - In fact, we have very little problems with him.

 - Only last night he coughed a lot and he was vomiting while coughing.

 - A : And sage tea?

 - P : It didn't help much.

 - A : I have the impression that it is a dry, short cough.

 - FP : Yes, yes, that's right.

 - I took him last night in my bed and he was coughing from half past three until five o'clock.

 - If you hear this kind of cough (the cough is short and superficial), this superficial cough, you have to think of Tuberculinum.

 - Again you see a relatively thin child, an active child with an emaciated neck.

 - Where do we find the rubric for an emaciated neck?

 - Under back, "emaciation, cervical region" on page 887.

BACK,EMACIATION,Cervical region : Calc., iod., lyc., Nat-m., sanic., sars.

 - This is a very important rubric.

 - Tuberculinum is not in this rubric, but it has to be added, also Veratrum and Senecio.

 - Underneath you see the rubric "emaciation, dorsal region, scapular muscles", it is Plumbum.

 - Don't forget Plumbum in infantile paralysis.

 - If you doubt Calcarea you have to think of Plumbum.

 - What do Plumbum children do to their fingers?

 - Answer : "Bite."

 - A : Yes, they bite their fingers, together with which other remedy?

 - With Hura brasiliensis.

 - A : Does he perspire much at night?

 - FP : Yes, yes.

 - A : Does he still do?

 - FP : Much less.

 - Now, he perspires less.

 - Before, oh dear it was terrible.

 - A : Where especially?

 - FP : On his head.

 - He always had wet hair.

 - We thought that this was one of the causes why he got a cold.

 - A : Now he perspires less?

 - FP : Yes, less.

 - A : How is his appetite?

 - FP Very good.

 - A : What does he like to eat?

 - FP He nearly eats everything, but vegetables, he doesn't like to eat it so much.

 - But in fact he eats enough meat.

 - A : Does he eat everything or is he fastidious?

 - FP : The other child is fastidious.

 - A : What about milk?

 - FP : Do you drink milk?

 - P : No, very little.

 - A : Eggs?

 - FP : He also eats very little eggs.

 - He eats very little fried eggs.

 - Sometimes he eats a little bit, but only a small piece.

 - A : At that time the tonsils were swollen.

 - How are they now?

 - Open your mouth.

 - (Looks at the tonsils)

 - It is less.

 - They are less swollen now.

 - FP : Once we went to X with him to have the tonsils taken out, but they warned us, "Leave the tonsils."

 - Because it was not worse than average.

 - A : He started talking early, was walking at the age of one year, has strong fear of heights.

 - FP : Yes, on small playing toys which are a little bit higher, he had an anxiety from a certain height on.

 - He will climb somewhere, but not on a climbing frame, that is too much.

 - A : Everything is all right with his character?

 - FP : Yes, Yes., In fact he is the opposite of the others, he is very lively.

 - He can't sit still.

 - A : He doesn't sit still while watching television?

 - FP : He always has to jump or climb on the couch, but he can't sit still, unless there should be a program on television he is very interested in.

 - A : Is he afraid of horror films?

 - FP : No, but I noticed that he has a remarkable fear of dogs.

 - Once he saw a dog at quite a distance and the owner held the leash.

 - Nevertheless he held his breath, and rolled his head to and fro and didn't breathe anymore.

 - On the other side he likes to go to our friends, because they have a little dog and then he is running about with it.

 - This is strange : on the one side they like to do dangerous things and on the other side they have a fear of dogs.

 - This is a peculiarity for Tuberculinum.

 - If somebody has been bitten by a dog I take this as a symptom for fear of dogs.

 - A dog doesn't bite anybody who isn't afraid of dogs, unless they excite the dog, this is something different.

 - But if somebody is just walking on the street and he meets somebody with a dog, the dog sees him, runs towards him and bites him, this means that this person is afraid of dogs.

 - A : This cough is interesting.

 - This is the cough which is typical for the remedy, which is a peculiarity of this remedy.

 - I will give him the remedy and I would like to see him again.

 - FP : Together with me?

 - A : Yes, I would like to see him again next week, to see how he reacted.

 - He got this remedy already before.

 - Now he has a slight relapse and I repeated the remedy.

 - Remark : "He has fear of heights."

 - A : Yes, but this is not typical for Tuberculinum.

 - They might have it as you hear in this case, but it is not typical.

 Follow-up ( 1/2 year later)

 - Do you see the difference between the two children? The eldest is a Calcarea child and the youngest is a Tuberculinum child.

 - The head of the eldest child is larger than in the younger child.

 - This does not mean that the Calcarea child will never need Tuberculinum.

 - There is a Tuberculinum miasm in the family, therefore one day the eldest child might need Tuberculinum.

 - But up to now he is doing fine on Calcarea.

 - He also has this emaciated neck, and Calcarea is also in the rubric, this thin Cleopatra neck.

 - You often see this neck in people with black hair and grey blue eyes, long, narrow people.

 - You find this in the Repertory in the generalities under "lean people" on page 1370.

GENERALITIES,LEAN people : Ambr., arg-n., bry., Calc-p., caust., ign., iod., lach., lyc., nit-ac., nux-v., phos., Sec., sep., sil., Sulph., tub.

 - You have to add Natrum muriaticum and Phosphoricum acidum in this rubric.

 - If you see somebody with a Cleopatra neck you should think of Natrum muriaticum.

 - Also Calcarea has such a neck and Tuberculinum.

 - Tuberculinum is also lean, and when they take off their clothes you can easily count their ribs.

 - They are narrow chested and when they turn their head you see the glands.

 - If somebody is very thin emaciated, with a narrow chest it must give you the impulse to think of Tuberculinum.

 - A : I saw him on January 4, because he was coughing the whole night.

 - Then he was good until March 22, your wife was here.

 - I gave him the remedy in 10M potency.

 - He was doing well for nearly 3 months.

 - FP : This is unusual because otherwise he was coughing about every three weeks or he had a cold.

 - This kind of cough is a dry cough and a dry cough is a "hacking cough" on page 791.

 - It is a very big rubric, but the most important remedy here is Tuberculinum.

 - A : Now he comes for a cough especially in exertions.

 - He talked very much, he couldn't shut up.

 - FP : He can't sit still either.

 - He is always running through the house, upstairs, downstairs.

 - It is normal on the playground, but not in the house.

 - He also does this in school.

 - He is always in motion and doesn't get tired.

 - He is running about the whole time.

 - A : I repeated the remedy on March 22 in 10M potency, this is 10 days ago.

 - How did he react to it?

 - FP : You gave us two tablets to take home.

 - A : And I told you that first you should wait, maybe he would become better by himself.

 - FP : I didn't give him a tablet, it went away by itself.

 - I also asked my wife and she also said that these three tablets were reserve.

 - A : Then he got a cold, but this went away within a few days.

 - This is a sign that he has become stronger.

 - FP : It is not to compare.

 - Before he was in treatment with a child specialist in X and he was ill the whole time.

 - One weekend he was healthy and the next weekend he got it again.

 - He had a geographic tongue.

 - The child specialist said it was typical for children who have this kind.

 - A : Strange enough he has a completely different character as his brother.

 - The one is very lively and the other is always a nice boy.

 - FP : His brother is always busy, but you don't hear him.

 - You can see him already reading in the morning, but he not.

 - Do you see this Calcarea child? He is sitting there with a book and is reading, while his Tuberculinum brother is running about.

 - A : Does he lie still in bed?

 - FP : No.

 - A : Is he wobbling to and fro?

 - FP : No.

 - A : How does he lie in bed?

 - FP : On his side.

 - Not on his abdomen.

 - I saw him also lying on his back and also on the side.

 - In the morning and in the evening when daddy is training his mother is suffering very much.

 - He is just running in the bathroom, always wants to play, wants to get in somebody else's bed, annoys his mother, does things like that.

 - A : Sometimes he is a difficult child?

 - FP : Yes., He is very affectionate.

 - My mother-in-law prefers his brother to come, because he is not so difficult.

 - A : He doesn't break his things?

 - FP : His brother has all his toys, there is not even a scratch on them.

 - A : Does he break things, this little boy?

 - FP : Yes, the tires of his cars and things like that.

 - In the rubric "destructiveness" the remedy is second degree.

 - It is relatively a big rubric, but nevertheless it is interesting to look at the remedies in this rubric on page 36.

MIND,DESTRUCTIVENESS : Agar., anan., apis., bell., bufo., calc., camph., canth., carb-s., cupr., cur., hura., hyos., lach., laur., merc-i-f., mosch., op., phos., plat., plb., sol-t-ae., staph., stram., stront., sulph., tarent., tub., verat.

 - You see Belladonna, Calcarea carbonica, Stramonium, Tarentula, Tuberculinum and Veratrum album.

 - Notwithstanding that I haven't seen it in Veratrum yet.

 - Did anybody see yet a destructive Veratrum child?

 - Answer : "Yes, when they are anxious and the mother tries to hold them they can be destructive."

 - A : Does he still like milk?

 - FP : Yes., I also want to say this : he likes to eat a lot of cheese.

 - A : Does the other boy like to eat cheese?

 - FP : Yes., He also likes meat.

 - A : So, he still drinks milk?

 - FP : Yes., In fact he doesn't like coffee.

 - A : Does the milk have to be warm?

 - FP : No, cold milk.

 - A : He also had swollen glands and large tonsils.

 - Open your mouth.

 - (examines the patient's throat)

 - It is completely normal.

 - There are still glands.

 - There are some small ones.

 - At that time it was a very clear symptom.

 - Chronically swollen tonsils are a very important symptom of Tuberculinum.

 - Tuberculinum and Baryta carbonica these are the two important remedies in chronic swollen tonsils.

 - A : And he is still afraid of dogs?

 - FP : Yes, although it also became less.

 - But it still happened that he asked me to carry him on the arm.

 - He goes towards the dog, but when he sees that the dog is coming to him, then the father has to carry him.

 - A : He didn't need a homoeopathic remedy since November 4.

 - It is already a while compared to before, and then he had to go to the child specialist every two weeks.

 - FP : It went immediately away the first time when we came here.

 - We were immediately convinced.

 - The first tablet showed its action.

 - A : So since December 1986 you were here 4 times.

 - Until now I gave him the remedy three times, twice M and once 10M.

 - Here you see again that you have to repeat the remedy.

 - Besides Boericke describes that you have to give Tuberculinum especially in high potencies, M, 10M, 50M.

 - Maybe you have experiences with low potencies, but we use high potencies and we have good results.

 - Question : "Is it typical for Tuberculinum, that these children are very talkative?"

 - A : Yes, they are talkative children, especially during fever.

CASE4

Pneumonia

 Tuberculinum bovinum kent

 - Girl, 4 years old

 - At the beginning of this case I would like to tell you that whenever you teach you just teach what you have seen in practice yourself, not what you have read somewhere in books.

 - You can do Homoeopathy quite a lot of damage, for example, when you teach that in acute cases with high fever you may never give Tuberculinum.

 - "Never" does not exist in Homoeopathy as well as "always".

 - So just teach what you have really seen in practice.

 - This is a clear picture of a lung inflammation of the left lower part, nearly half of the lung is affected.

 - A : She comes from India and now she has been with you for four years.

 - How often did she have bronchitis in the course of last year?

 - MP : Last year about 4 or 5 times.

 - A : Has she been hospitalized every time?

 - MP : No, but she got antibiotics every time.

 - A : Did you ever go with her to the hospital?

 - MP : No, we have been seen by a specialist.

 - He took X-rays of the lung, but there was nothing to be seen.

 - Then she had to take medicines and she had to take them her whole life.

 - A : Which?

 - MP : LOMIDAL (Cromoglycin).

 - A : Does she have to take them because of the asthmatic breathing?

 - P : No, for the lungs, so that they remain open.

 - And she also had to take THEOPHYLLIN.

 - A : The specialist told her that she had to take medicines her whole life.

 - You came here in treatment because she was so often ill.

 - When you came to the first consultation the child was not ill.

 - MP : Yes, last year during the summer holidays.

 - A : She wasn't ill when you came here with her?

 - MP : At that time she was not ill.

 - Normally she was ill and got a cold during winter.

 - In the summer she was all right.

 - We were here in June and at that time she was doing well.

 - A : Until when was she doing well?

 - MP : She was good the whole winter.

 - Oh no, it's not true.

 - A : She got fever.

 - When did it start?

 - MP : The last time? It was last week on Monday.

 - Now, it is Tuesday.

 - On 22, when she wanted to get up she had pain everywhere and had shivers, 39.5o fever.

 - She lay on the couch the whole day, then I came to you.

 - I took this case on video some days or one week after the acute state.

 - At that time I even couldn't take it on video because it was a very dangerous case, you will hear about it.

 - It started with fever and pain all over, sore everywhere.

 - You will hear this kind of expression again and again in Tuberculinum cases.

 - It starts with a kind of influenza and the patients say that everything is sore, that all the limbs are sore.

 - These are not particularly strong pains, no stitching or burning or whatever kind of pain, it just hurts.

 - If you look under extremities, "pain, sore" on page 1126 you see the general rubric and as a subrubric "heat, during".

EXTREMETIES,PAIN,SORE,BRUISED,heat, during : Arn., ars., bell., Chin., nat-m., nux-v., phos., Puls., rhod., tub.

 - This and also in "chill, during" in both rubrics there is Tuberculinum.

EXTREMETIES,PAIN,SORE,BRUISED,chill, during : Arn., bapt., nux-v., rhus-t., tub.

 - Everybody gives then Nux vomica, because it looks like an influenza or Rhus toxicodendron, when the pain is better by motion.

 - Another important influenza remedy which is also in this rubric is Baptisia.

 - Baptisia in differential diagnosis to which remedy?

 - To Bryonia, because of the busy dreams.

 - In Baptisia it is a kind of Delirium, these are not real dreams, it is more a delirium, "I haven't slept the whole night nor was I awake; I worked the whole night."

 - Another differential diagnosis is Rhus toxicodendron because of the restlessness, they are tossing in bed.

 - And the bed feels hard, this is the differential diagnosis to which remedy?

 - To Arnica.

 - They often have a very bad odor from the mouth and a strong coated tongue, we have to differentiate from Mercurius.

 - There is an equal rubric in the generalities, "Pain, sore" on page 1385 and as a subrubric "motion, amel.", there we find again Rhus toxicodendron and Tuberculinum.

 GENERALITIES,PAIN,SORE,MOTION,amel. : Caust., pyrog., rhus-t., tub.

 - That's the way it starts, but it develops further to a bronchitis and then to a pneumonia.

 - This is always the same.

 - If it is really a Nux vomica case you don't have to worry, it is not a problem either if it is a Rhus toxicodendron case; I mean these situations will disappear by themselves, but when it is a Tuberculinum case the patient will end up in the hospital.

 - MP : She also had pain below in the chest on the left side, but up to then she didn't say anything about it.

 - She said, "I have pain all over, in the arms and legs."

 - She said this in the morning.

 - Later she got pain deep in the chest on the left side.

 - A : It was strange that she couldn't lie on it anymore.

 - MP : Yes, she could not lie on the left side.

 - She had to turn around.

 - She had to lie on the right side.

 - It lasted some days.

 - This kind of influenza develops to a lung inflammation on the left side and she can't lie on this side.

 - She was in treatment with a colleague of the Centre and when it became really dangerous he came to me to ask for advice.

 - You find this pain in the lung under "chest, pain, lungs" on page 848 : Lycopodium, Phosphorus, Rumex, Sulphur, Tuberculinum.

 - "Right"..

 - Elaps is the only second degree remedy, Elaps also with diarrhoea, for example, in Crohn's disease.

 - "Left" : Phosphorus, Sulphur, and you have to add Tuberculinum.

 - Besides you have to add Myrtus communis in the rubric "pain, lung, left".

 - Myrtus communis has a pain on the left side in the lung which radiates to the left shoulder blade.

 - It is a special remedy in beginning tuberculosis.

 - Further you see in "chest, pain, lung" the subrubric "lower part" : Oxalicum acidum and Phosphorus and an addition is Tuberculinum.

 - Also in the subrubric "apex" Tuberculinum has to be added and also in "apex, left".

 - Below you write "and spleen", this means pain in the left lung and at the same time in the spleen, this is only Tuberculinum.

 - Under the subrubric "inspiration agg." you have to write a new subrubric ("chest, pain, lung, apex ) "extending to the left arm and to axillary" : Tuberculinum.

 - They describe these pains as deep pains, not in the wall of the chest as we know it from Ranunculus bulbosus.

 - It is a deep pain, they feel it really in the lungs.

 - Cimicifuga also has these superficial pains, neuralgic pains which are under the left mammae, especially during pregnancy.

 - These pains can extend to the left arm, but usually it is a numbness in the arm.

 - Cimicifuga is a very hysteric remedy which talks very much and sighs very much.

 - So, this is the second symptom of this child, the pain in the left lung after an influenza.

 - A : She had very high fever? How much?

 - MP : It was always more than 40oC.

 - That's what I wanted to prove.

 - The fever was always over 40oC, even up to 41o, so very, very high fever.

 - A : We gave her a remedy, Sulphur 10M.

 - The doctor who treated her gave Bryonia, because she was very thirsty - and even for milk, the mother told this only later.

 - She also wanted to lie alone on the couch, but not on the painful side.

 - Because Phosphorus didn't help - Phosphorus hardly can lie on the painful side and she was very thirsty - afterwards she got Bryonia, but the doctor didn't get a real good feeling with it; also not with Phosphorus, because she did not care for people.

 - You know that Phosphorus can be indifferent, withdrawn, without contact to the environment, but mostly in mental cases.

 - But this child was lying here, with very high fever, these left sided pains and she didn't worry about the other, I mean, she didn't want to have company.

 - It did not fit for Phosphorus.

 - That's why the doctor thought, "She is a little bit indifferent, she doesn't want to have company, maybe it is Bryonia."

 - So he gave her Bryonia - without result.

 - Phosphorus didn't help either, Bryonia didn't help, so what do we do?

 - We give Sulphur - without any result.

 - A : Suddenly she said that she liked ice cream and cold milk.

 - The fact that she liked to drink cold milk only appeared lately.

 - It was never so, was it?

 - MP : Before she liked to drink cold drinks, but not particularly milk.

 - Only the last time she liked to drink milk.

 - A : Then she got her remedy in 10M potency, one spoonful, and from Saturday morning on the fever went down.

 - MP : In the afternoon it came back.

 - A : Then we gave the remedy in 50M potency and on Sunday in the forenoon the fever went down again, in the evening the fever was nearly gone.

 - What happened exactly?

 - We gave her Tuberculinum 10M on Friday, then the fever came down on Saturday, went up again on Saturday in the afternoon.

 - Then she got Tuberculinum 50M and on Sunday she was nearly cured.

 - A : We saw her yesterday also, and then the pain was clearly better.

 - She started to eat, to walk around and today she is clearly lively.

 - The X-ray dates from yesterday and there you see a definite pneumonia.

 - At the moment that the girl had this fever I didn't send her to the radiology.

 - First I had to cure her and then send her immediately to radiology, to see what it was.

 - If you send a child to the hospital before it is cured, it is a lost case, because they put her immediately in the hospital.

 - I found the remedy only because I did an examination with the stethoscope; not only because of that, but also because Phosphorus, Bryonia and Sulphur didn't work.

 - During the examination I heard something which is very particular for tuberculosis, namely, the amphoric breathing.

 - That's why I knew there was a kind of abscess or a hole or something like that and I thought that this must be a sudden upset of tuberculosis.

 - I wasn't sure about the remedy, but then, because of the milk, the left sidedness and the desire ice cream it become clear.

 - Question : "..." (not understandable)

 - A : Before the doctor has seen the child for three days in the morning and in the evening, without any change of the situation.

 - If a child is very acute ill and you give the right remedy you see a wonderful reaction the next day.

 - Don't think that Phosphorus or Bryonia did something here, certainly not.

 - If you give the remedy to very sick children they are healthy the next day, even in acute appendicitis or pneumonia or what else.

 - 12 to 18 hours later they are cured.

 - You see a big difference compared to before.

 - A : Here are still two clear flus, probably a bronchopneumonia with two foci.

 - Nearly the whole left lung has been affected.

 - Maybe the allopathic differential diagnosis is not so easy.

 - Whether it is a bronchopneumonia or a pneumonia is not easy to say, because it was flu all over.

 - A : It cured spectacularly without antibiotics.

 - MP : Yes, it is really fantastic.

 - A : It is a very thin child.

 - MP : Yes.

 - A : Does she eat well?

 - MP : Yes, she has always eaten well.

 - A : But she doesn't gain weight?

 - MP : No, in proportion not.

 - Another typical symptom is the emaciation notwithstanding a good appetite.

 - You find this in the Repertory under stomach "appetite, increased, emaciation with" on page 479.

STOMACH, APPETITE, ravenous, eating, emaciation, with : Abrot., Calc., Iod., Nat-m., Petr., phos., psor., sulph., tub.

 - A : Is she afraid of certain things?

 - MP : No.

 - A : Of certain animals?

 - MP : No.

 - A : Never was anxious? For example, for cats, dogs?

 - MP : We had a dog, but she was never afraid of it, she never had an anxiety of animals.

 - A : Does she perspire much at night?

 - MP : Yes.

 - In serious cases the perspiration at night is a constant recurrent symptom.

 - This perspiration weakens the patient, "weakness, perspiration, from, night" on page 1418, Mercurius and Tuberculinum.

 - A : Every night?

 - MP : In the morning, especially on the head.

 - She can also perspire on the head, real drops, in fact at the whole body.

 - When it is very warm, just like now, she also perspires during the day.

 - She wakes up in the morning, and you feel that she is wet, she really feels clammy.

 - A : Does she like to travel?

 - MP : Yes, she does.

 - A : What do you mean?

 - MP : She likes to go if we are going somewhere.

 - A : In fact, she doesn't like meat so much, does she?

 - MP : No.

 - A : But she prefers a particular kind of meat to another one, doesn't she?

 - MP : Yes.

 - A : When she only eats meat what does she like to eat?

 - MP : Tell it yourself.

 - P : Boiled meat.

 - A : What else?

 - Don't you think she is a little bit too lazy to chew?

 - MP : Yes, in fact she is on all levels.

 - She likes things to be easy.

 - If somebody else does something for her she takes advantage of it.

 - A : Does she like chopped meat?

 - MP : Yes, she likes it very much.

 - But I don't know whether she likes it more than other meat.

 - A : Does she like milk?

 - MP : Yes, she does in the last months.

 - Before she didn't like ice cream, but now she likes it very much.

 - A : Does she grind her teeth at night?

 - MP : No, I never heard it.

 - A : How does she lie in bed to sleep?

 - MP : On the right side.

 - A : Does she ever sleep on her abdomen?

 - MP : Yes., In the last days I also saw that she lies on her abdomen very often.

 - I watched her very closely when she was ill and she lay on her abdomen.

 - A : We have another X-Ray made for a check up.

 - Objectively and subjectively the child is doing well.

 - The X-Rays are not important for the child, but it is for us so that we can judge objectively.

 - We have to know whether it is cured completely.

 - Therefore we need another X-Ray.

 - Maybe after a fortnight and then again one 14 days later.

 - It has to look exactly the same on the left side.

 - A few foci will remain.

 - The doctor who treated her before entered my room and is telling what he saw at the beginning.

 - A : (to the doctor who is treating her) Tell me what was remarkable with her.

 - D : (doctor) Her mother told me that she always wanted to be alone and after a few days she didn't want to lie down on the couch once.

 - She said, "May l stay in my room?" Nobody had to stay with her.

 - That's why I gave her Bryonia, because it was also on the left side, she wanted to be alone and because she had dry, cracked lips.

 - A : Although she couldn't lie on the painful side.

 - D : This Phosphorus symptom only appeared after Bryonia.

 - And because this was so clear I gave her Phosphorus, although before she didn't react to Phosphorus in acute situations.

 - But because of these clear symptoms we repeated it once.

 - A : And after Phosphorus she wanted to be alone more often.

 - She had to lie on the right side or on the back.

 - We felt that the mental picture didn't correspond to the modalities.

 Follow-up

 - A : I don't know how long ago I saw you.

 - On June 29, so 3 weeks ago.

 - Then we saw the X-rays of the lungs.

 - And now you have the check up X-rays taken 2 weeks after the illness.

 - Give me the X-rays so that I can compare.

 - On the second picture which has been taken two weeks later everything is all right.

 - She is also lively again.

 - What about the appetite?

 - MP : It is very good now.

 - A few days after the remedy she was doing well, she even desired food, also in between she wanted to eat something.

 - I noticed that the first days, it lasted the whole week, that she was rather tired after every exertion.

 - She went outside to play, came back, lay down on the couch and slept.

 - The whole first week she was tired after exertion, but after one week it was over.

 - A : Has the pain disappeared completely?

 - MP : Yes, there are no complaints anymore.

 - A : And from coughing?

 - MP : She doesnt cough anymore.

 - She nearly didn't cough.

 - She had rather quite a lot of eruption on the head.

 - You still see it a little bit, the white spots on the head.

 - It is still a result of it.

 - A : This is a very good reaction.

 - What does she eat now?

 - MP : She eats everything.

 - I noticed when I asked her 'What do you like to drink?" she doesn't ask so much for milk anymore.

 - A : I have the impression she gained weight.

 - MP : No, she has grown.

 - That's what the other say.

 - I checked it on the basis of the school recordings.

 - Last April she was 1.10 m and now she is 1.25 m.

 - A : She grew 15 cm.

 - MP : Yes, in one year.

 - A : Her eyes look very well.

 - By this you often recognize how children are doing.

 - (To the patient) Look here.

 - Now they are flickering.

 - They are more lively.

 - I don't need to know more.

 - Everything developed normally.

 - I want to ask you explicitly : Did you give her any other medicine besides the one you got from us?

 - MP : Absolutely nothing.

 - A : What did the radiologist say about the X-ray?

 - MP : I didn't speak him personally.

 - But when I came the second time the nurse who made these X-rays said, "Has she been treated homoeopathically for quite a long time? 'Yes, for one year."

 - "And how are the results?"

 - I told her, 'We are satisfied."

 - And then she said, "I would like to be treated homoeopathically.

 - But my doctor is my neighbour.

 - I can't stay away from him."

 - I said, "May I see the X-ray?" She said, 'I'm only competent technically, the doctor has to decide about it."

 - But I could see the results by her view.

 - When you have children from India first you have to think of Tuberculinum, children from Zaire or from Haiti first think of Medorrhinum.

 - Prostitution in Haiti is enormous, it is an AIDS land.

 - It is the same in Zaire.

 - I think India is a little bit more moral, not so promiscuous and it is a poor country.

 Follow-up

 - A : In June 1988 she had a left-sided pneumonia.

 - We gave Tuberculinum 10M and 50M and she was cured.

 - I see that she has been well for quite a long time.

 - Do you see how good she is? This is now 10 months later, and there is a very good development.

 - MP : She was here a few times, but she was doing well until the end of March this year.

 - Then she got bronchitis again.

 - A : How did she react?

 - P : Today I have headache.

 - MP : She had fever and stayed home for one week.

 - After many medicines she became better at the end of the week.

 - A : Half a year, so nine months she was doing relatively good compared to the nine months before, where she had bronchitis regularly.

 - Is her character the same as before?

 - MP : I think she changed in the sense that she is more independent, she has more her own will.

 - She also tries to persevere.

 - A : Is she still so thirsty?

 - MP : Yes, she is.

 - After the last bronchitis she likes more sour things.

 - Otherwise she preferred sweet things.

 - Now she eats lemons.

 - Before she didn't want to eat them.

 - Normally, she eats very well.

 - I noticed it after the last bronchitis.

 - A : Is she still so thirsty?

 - MP : Yes, yes, she drinks very much.

 - A : Milk?

 - MP : Yes, also.

 - A : Does she still like ice-cream?

 - MP : Not so much anymore.

 - A : And meat?

 - MP : Yes.

 - A : In particular? Or everything?

 - MP : Now all kinds of meat.

 - No particular desires.

 - A : Does she eat everything?

 - MP : Yes.

 - A : Does she show certain anxieties?

 - MP : I can't say.

 - A : Is she afraid of animals?

 - MP : No, not so much.

 - A : No animal at all?

 - P : For lions.

 - A : But there are no lions here.

 - MP : I can't say she is afraid of them.

 - A : Do you have a dog?

 - MP : No, we don't have anymore, only a few cocks and chickens.

 - A : Is she grinding teeth?

 - MP : I payed attention to it, but I couldn't find out.

 - A : Does she still perspire easily?

 - MP : Yes, she still does.

 - 1 haven't seen her anymore.

 - She is in treatment with my colleague who gave her Pulsatilla a few times.

 - Are there still questions?

 - Question : "Could you say anything about Elaps in Crohn's disease?"

 - A : For these cases it is typical that they also have this perspiration and so on, but they have a very particular kind of colic.

 - It is a colic like in Colocynthis; they have a good appetite, but they can't eat.

 - That is typical for Elaps.

 - If you look in the Repertory under stomach, "appetite, eat, with inability W' on page 476 you see China, Elaps, Sulphur and Tabacum.

STOMACH, APPETITE, capricious (hunger, but knows not for what, or refuses things when offered), eat, with inability to : Chin., elaps., sulph., tab.

 - They have this kind of cramping pain in the stomach and they are better when they lie on their abdomen or press on it, "stomach, pain, lying, on abdomen, amel.

 - " on page 513.

STOMACH,PAIN,LYING,ON ABDOMEN,amel. : Elaps.

 - They have the desire of Tuberculinum, they like fat and fat things like Tuberculinum and in the family history there is tuberculosis, but they don't react to Tuberculinum.

 - If you study Elaps you see that it is a tubercular remedy, Crohn's disease and a right-sided lung problem.

 - These are also emaciated people, very thin people, who give a tuberculoid appearance.

 - Question : "If she would have had tuberculosis during early childhood would you have given her Tuberculinum?"

 - A : This is an adoptive child and the adoptive parents don't know it.

 - These are children of the street, who grow up in orphanages and are released for adoption.

 - Therefore the family history is normally not known.

 - But in India where normally the people don't eat meat and are starving - we know that Tuberculinum needs fat in order not to come in this bad situation and because there is nothing to eat in these countries the open tuberculosis appears very frequently.

 - If you give them sufficient food the frequency of the tuberculosis is diminished.

 - Question : "Aversion company during sickness, is this a symptom of Tuberculinum?"

 - A : I think Tuberculinum can imitate a lot of other remedies, but it is surely not a keynote for Tuberculinum.

 - I have a tuberculosis case like this here, which is cured with Natrum muriaticum and the causation for the tuberculosis was a grief.

 - In some cases you have to give Tuberculinum, in other cases Sulphur, in some other cases Calcarea.

 - The causation is important.

CASE5

 Recurrent bronchitis

 Tuberculinum bovinum kent

 - Boy, 6 years old

 - MP : We came with the child because of shortness of breath.

 - Last year about this time I had to go with him to the hospital, because he always had problems, coughing, coughing, coughing.

 - He took two bottles of antibiotics and was still coughing.

 - And I was very anxious.

 - I have been to the hospital with him every three weeks for one year.

 - They did all possible and impossible tests with him, but they couldn't find anything.

 - The last time I was there was in August, and they said : now he doesn't have any problems anymore.

 - But after 14 days in September it started again : coughing, especially in the morning and easily getting a cold.

 - He already had this when he was a baby, but last year he was very strong.

 - He wants to play football and to swim and I always had to forbid him.

 - In fact I didn't want to burden him, by being an over-worried mother, but I am anxious.

 - Now, I come here.

 - A : Has he been ill before?

 - You said that it started as a baby?

 - MP : Yes, as a baby.

 - If there were problems it had to do with the bronchial tubes.

 - We have three children, all of them have the same problem, but it is worse with him.

 - 5 months ago he went to a day care centre, and when he has been there for 2 weeks he got a running nose, started sneezing and in fact everything started with that.

 - I must tell you in the hospital they did a lung function and allergic tests and the only thing they found was that the tuberculin test was positive.

 - Therefore he had to take tuberculostatics for six months.

 - A : Was there tuberculosis in your family?

 - MP : Yes.

 - A : Are you sure?

 - MP : Yes.

 - We have the other two children examined, but the test was negative.

 - We don't know whether it was only by coincidence or whether it was indeed something serious.

 - It was not the cause of his disease, but they found out at the examinations.

 - He also got an asthma spray.

 - When we go to the sea he is always better.

 - Every year in June we have been to the sea for one month and then he was much, much better.

 - In this case it is better at the sea.

 - In many cases the sea aggravates, in other cases it ameliorates.

 - A : Tell me, you give good information.

 - MP : He is very good, but very nervous.

 - It has always been so.

 - A : In what sense nervous?

 - MP : He can't sit still.

 - A : Is the father also nervous?

 - FP : No, the mother.

 - A : He doesn't sit still, so he is restless?

 - Do you call this nervousness?

 - MP : He is always jumping around.

 - When he was little, they called it hyperkinetic, always in action.

 - Let me give an example, we went swimming with 5 children and at the chute-the chute they had to queue up.

 - In this queue he was always jumping to and fro.

 - We couldn't recognize him from a distance, but we saw somebody jumping to and fro and thought that this should be our child, and indeed he was.

 - A : He can't sit still?

 - MP : He doesn't have problems with learning in school, but he can't sit still either.

 - Sometimes the teacher is complaining that he is disturbing the lessons.

 - He can learn very well, but he is also restless in class, sometimes he is disturbing the other children who don't understand so quickly.

 - A : He understands things very quickly?

 - MP : Yes.

 - A : Is there something else to say about his health, which we didn't mention yet?

 - MP : He has sensitive skin.

 - FP : At the moment it is better, but for quite a while he has had raw skin on the back which was peeling.

 - In fact, it is not an eczema.

 - A doctor also told me that it had something to do with the bronchial tubes.

 - Do you see a relationship between the skin and the cough, the shortness of breath?

 - A : No., Did you ever have eczema yourself?

 - P : No.

 - A : Has he ever been treated with ointment?

 - MP : No., In fact, it was not an eczema.

 - Don't forget that Tuberculinum is one of the most important remedies in constitutional eczema.

 - A : What about the appetite?

 - MP : Normal.

 - A : Is there something remarkable in him?

 - MP : No, he eats nearly everything.

 - A : What does he like to eat? I don't have to know what he eats, but what he likes to eat.

 - MP : Sweets.

 - A : What kind of sweets?

 - MP : Chocolate.

 - P : Also sour drops.

 - MP : Chocolate and the kinds of sweets which children like to eat.

 - A : Do you take chocolate spread on your bread in the morning? Or jam?

 - P : No marmalade.

 - FP : He never takes fruit to school.

 - A : You don't like marmalade.

 - P : Well yes.

 - MP : Anyway he doesn't eat it.

 - A : What else does he like to eat concerning sweets?

 - MP : Chocolate.

 - Normally, we don't give him any.

 - A : The question is whether he likes it.

 - What about meat?

 - MP : Not exaggerated.

 - A : He doesn't like meat?

 - MP : He eats it, but not a lot.

 - And concerning vegetables he likes carrots and spinach.

 - A : Is there a particular kind of meat which he doesn't like, or a particular kind which he likes very much?

 - MP : He prefers sausages and mutton, also chicken, not so much beefsteak.

 - P : Yes, I do.

 - A : And further?

 - FP : In fact we have very little problems concerning this level.

 - A : Is he very thirsty?

 - MP : Yes, he drinks very much.

 - When I don't give him milk he forms less mucus.

 - A : Does he like milk?

 - MP : Yes.

 - A : Warm milk?

 - MP : No, from the refrigerator.

 - FP : But he also likes chocolate milk, apple juice and orange juice.

 - A : So he is very thirsty?

 - MP : Yes., He drinks very much.

 - He also has to urinate very much.

 - A : A remarkably thirsty child.

 - He likes real cold milk, not warmed up?

 - MP : No.

 - A : Concerning meat he likes sausages, mutton and chicken.

 - Do you like hamburger and things like that?

 - P : Yes.

 - A : Chopped meat?

 - P : Yes.

 - MP : But he doesn't get any.

 - A : This was not the question.

 - I want to know whether he likes it.

 - Do you see how difficult the differential diagnosis between Phosphorus and Tuberculinum sometimes can be.

 - He is a sympathetic boy who easily makes contact with other people, who likes cold milk, but Tuberculinum children like Nesquick in their milk.

 - The delicacy is much more underlined in Tuberculinum, you don't find this in Phosphorus.

 - Besides Tuberculinum can be as thirsty as Phosphorus.

 - MP : We have been in Holland for one week, and there were meat croquettes, but he doesn't get them at home.

 - A : A don't want to judge about what you give him to eat, but I want to know what he likes to eat.

 - MP : When he gets this it is a treat.

 - Also when he gets chocolate mouse.

 - A : What is he afraid of? Are you afraid of anything?

 - P : I don't know.

 - A : You have to know.

 - Are you afraid of certain animals?

 - P : For wild animals.

 - For a big dog.

 - A : Did you notice that he is more afraid of dogs than other children?

 - FP : No., I think he is a person who has little or no anxiety at all, on all levels, not only concerning animals.

 - He is also not afraid of starting something new.

 - A : He says that he is afraid of big dogs.

 - My question is whether this is right.

 - MP : I think that it is so.

 - He always wants to go there, but he is afraid of it.

 - He controls himself.

 - Also for big animals, cows, horses, he likes to go there, but he is a little bit withdrawn.

 - A : Does he grind his teeth?

 - MP : Yes, very much.

 - A : All right, now We know his remedy.

 - This was the first consultation.

 - It didn't last a longtime, maybe 15 or 20 minutes and you can be sure of the remedy.

 - Remark : "Tuberculinum is not in the rubric 'thirst

 - A : Yes., I added it in the rubric "extreme thirst", but it is a very big rubric, and I don't like these giant rubrics.

 Follow-up

 - A : I saw him on November 7, so 5 weeks ago.

 - I repeat for my colleagues : better at the sea, the sea air ameliorates his asthma, he likes to eat chocolate, sweets, also sausages and chopped meat, always thirsty, likes cold milk, anxiety for dogs and grinds his teeth at night.

 - These are the arguments for the remedy.

 - He got the remedy in 10M potency.

 - I forgot to tell you that Tuberculinum has a desire to wander, as well as his symptoms are constantly changing.

 - First bronchitis, then rheumatic pain, then this, then that, constant changing symptoms, which we can also see in which other remedy?

 - Answer : "In Pulsatilla?"

 - A : Changing symptoms in Pulsatilla?

 - The pain of Pulsatilla is changing and Pulsatilla has alternating and contradictory symptoms, but really changing symptoms?

 - Answer : "Lac caninum."

 - A : In Lac caninum the symptoms are changing the side.

 - Berberis is another important remedy, Berberis, Cimicifuga, Abrotanum, Carcinosin are all remedies which change symptomatology.

 - A lot of remedies have changing place.

 - There is another remedy which also likes to wander, to travel, desires changes and likes smoked meat, it is which remedy?

 - Answer : "Calcarea phosphorica."

 - A : Yes, Calcarea phosphorica, a sighing remedy, but they sigh because of the pain.

 - They don't sigh because of emotional problems, as we see in Ignatia and Cimicifuga.

 - Calcarea phosphorica is also an important remedy in growing pains.

 - Which other remedy has this also?

 - Phosphoricum acidum.

 - And another remedy which has to put his feet in cold water?

 - Guajacum.

 - And which desire has Guajacum?

 - Desire apples.

 - And which other remedy has desire apples? Apium graveolens.

 - A : Tell me how did he do?

 - MP : It is better, but it has not disappeared completely.

 - When I compare it to the previous year it is very well.

 - There are certain things which I didn't tell the last time : As a child he has had pseudo croup many times.

 - I had the impression that it occurred with excitements, when he was excited.

 - A : He didn't have it lately?

 - MP : No.

 - A : Did he ever have asthma or bronchitis?

 - MP : No., He hasn't been ill, especially at the beginning he was very good.

 - Now he is a little bit worse.

 - Maybe also because of the weather.

 - The aggravation with change of weather is an important symptom in Tuberculinum, as well as the change of weather from cold to warm as well from warm to cold.

 - At which place is Calcarea phosphorica sensitive to draft of air? In the neck, the cervical region, together with which remedy?

 - Answer : "Rhus toxicodendron."

 - Answer : "Silicea."

 - A : Cimicifuga.

 - Silicea is sensitive to draft of air all over.

 - If you look under back, "stiffness, cervical region, air, draft of ' on page 947 you see three remedies, two sighing and one other.

air, draft of : Calc-p., cimic., Rhus-t.

 - Calcarea phosphorica, Cimicifuga and Rhus toxicodendron.

 - This is one of the keynotes of Cimicifuga.

 - MP : I also think that he changed by character, he is really quiet.

 - Now, it is nearly the end of the school year and now he becomes a little bit more restless and sometimes aggressive towards his brother.

 - A : He was more quiet?

 - MP : Yes, especially at the beginning.

 - But now in the last days, he isn't anymore.

 - A : What about grinding teeth?

 - MP : I didn't hear it anymore, while before I heard it down the hall when the door was open.

 - Now I went to his bed, paid special attention to it and then I didn't notice it anymore.

 - A : Has his eating habits changed or are they still the same?

 - MP : They are still the same.

 - A : Now he is relatively quiet.

 - Is he more quiet than before?

 - MP : Yes.

 - In this child you see again that he is wrinkling his forehead.

 - I think you can add this in your own Repertory.

 - The wrinkling forehead in chest symptoms in Lycopodium everybody knows, but it is not known very well that Tuberculinum also wrinkles the forehead.

 - A : Does he still drink so much milk?

 - MP : No., I gave him only tea.

 - A : But he liked cold milk.

 - Has this desire disappeared in the meantime? Do you still like to drink milk?

 - P : No.

 - MP : He also pays attention that he doesn't drink coca cola or he only takes toothpaste without peppermint.

 - A : Does he lie still in bed?

 - MP : Yes.

 - A : Was he quiet in bed before?

 - MP : Rather.

 - He has a certain position to sleep.

 - He always lies half on his abdomen and half on his side, the neck backwards and with his knees pulled up.

 - A : Under his abdomen?

 - MP : Yes., And his neck is a little bit bent.

 - This is the sleeping position of Medorrhinum, and often you can see this in Tuberculinum, on the abdomen, with the knees under the abdomen.

 - MP : His skin is very dry and raw.

 - Now I didn't put anything particular on it, but it improved very much.

 - Otherwise it was very raw, like sandpaper.

 - Even the skin improved.

 - Phosphorus is an important remedy in dry skin, ichthyosis (A group of skin disorders characterized by dry, scaly, or thickened skin.) , dry fish-like skin and so on, but here it is Tuberculinum.

 - Don't forget Tuberculinum in eczema in children.

 - And when they get asthma, after the eczema, it is difficult to decide whether the asthma occurred on the basis of the suppression of the eczema, because they treated this eczema with ointment.

 - You can use this rubric only when the asthma appeared clearly after the eczema has disappeared.

 - This rubric is very well known, but there is a remedy which is always forgotten, and this is Hepar sulphuris.

 - For me Hepar sulphuris is one of the most important remedies in asthma and eczema.

 - In the rubric "asthma from suppressed eruptions" Hepar is only one, but nevertheless it is a very important remedy which we always forget.

 - They have eczema especially in the bends of the elbows and knees, together with asthma, and they are better by which weather?

 - In wet weather, in warm, wet weather.

 - The last summer, this dry summer was very bad for Hepar patients.

 - If you have such a patient then you give him an aerosol only with water, without any medicine like LOMIDAL or things like that, only the moistness will make him better.

 - If you have a Ferrum patient with suppressed skin eruptions which is the first symptom?

 - Which symptom do you always see in Ferrum?

 - Vertigo, they nearly always have a vertigo, usually by rising from stooping and so on, with asthma.

 - You give Ferrum, the asthma disappears, the eczema appears again, and which is the next remedy, when the eczema appeared again after giving Ferrum? The skin is dry, the stool is dry, always constipated and wet weather improves?

 - Alumina.

 - Alumina is complementary to Ferrum.

 - A : Go on telling.

 - You observe very well.

 - MP : Since he has been here, he doesn't use any medicines now.

 - Before he always got a cough syrup, but now he doesn't get anymore.

 - On December 16, 1987 he got Sac lac, on March 2 again, half a year later, on June 4, 1988 I repeated Tuberculinum 10M.

 - In October again Sac lac and on March 3, 1989 again once Tuberculinum 10M, this means that within a period of 2 years he got three times Tuberculinum.

 - Yesterday when we were driving with the car to this place, we were discussing some difficult cases with 4 doctors, and then one symptom appeared which was very important to decide about the case and that was dermographism (Dermographism literally means “skin writing.” While firm stroking of the skin usually leaves some redness and occasionally mild raised areas,) .

 - Who can tell me where we can find this rubric?

 - Answer : "Skin, discoloration, red on scratching."

 - A : No, not really, but you are very close.

 - Answer : "Streaks."

 - A : Yes, streaks.

 - "Skin, discoloration, red, scratching, after streaks, after" on page 1306, this is the rubric for dermographism.

streaks, after : Calc., carb-v., eupho., par., ph-ac., phos., sabad.

 - Question : "Is there also a 'white discoloration after scratching', because there is also a negative dermographism.

 - ? "

 - A : I haven't seen it, therefore I didn't look for it in the Repertory.

 - Remark : "It exists in patients with neurodermatitis."

 - A : Yes, in neurodermatitis, but it is the inflamed, red skin which becomes white.

 - Remark : "No, no."

 - A : A normal, healthy skin, which becomes white after scratching I haven't seen it yet.

CASE6

 Bronchopneumonia

 Tuberculinum bovinum kent

 - Boy, 14 years old

 - Earlier somebody told me about a female patient who has had tuberculosis and who still had many calcifications in the lungs.

 - She gave her Calcarea on which she has reacted very well for quite a long time, until the eczema appeared, first on the leg and then in the face and this eczema was very strongly limited, an eczema anulare.

 - This is very typical for Tuberculinum.

 - Maybe other remedies have this also, but it is very typical for Tuberculinum.

 - You don't find this as a rubric under skin, you find there something else, which also indicates Tuberculinum, namely under herpetic eruptions, "herpes circinatus".

 - The vesicles are very round and in the middle you often see a white spot.

 - In Belgium they call it St.

 - Katherinville.

 - All right, this here is also an acute case.

 - The day before the patient was seen by a colleague and now it is difficult to see whether the remedy he gave him acted or not.

 - A : He had eczema from childhood on, this has been treated with ointment and afterwards he got asthma.

 - He is treated chronically for this.

 - Now he is acutely ill.

 - And again this cough (short and superficial).

 - It is as if they don't have the energy to cough really.

 - A : Yesterday he became ill suddenly.

 - He had stitching pain.

 - Is the cough now looser than yesterday?

 - MP : He can't cough.

 - A : Why not?

 - MP : Because he has so much pain.

 - A : Where?

 - MP : There (points to the left side of the chest)

 - A : On the left side.

 - MP : I think that's why he holds back his cough.

 - A : Was the cough dry yesterday?

 - MP : Yes.

 - A : Now, he coughs more.

 - Now the cough is looser.

 - MP : Yes.

 - A : Did the pain aggravate?

 - MP : He has more pain, also pain in the shoulders.

 - A : On which side did he sleep last night? On which side do you prefer to sleep?

 - P : On the right side.

 - Stitching pain while coughing and he has to lie on the right side.

 - He says that the cough is looser than the day before and when a cough becomes looser this is a good sign.

 - A : How is the pain in the side, when you are coughing?

 - P : Stitching.

 - Stitching pain indicates which remedy first? Bryonia, but for Bryonia he had to lie on the left side, the affected side.

 - A : Are you very thirsty?

 - P : Yes.

 - A : Very thirsty?

 - P : Yes.

 - A : What did he drink?

 - MP : Water and chocolate milk.

 - The way he looked at his mother Bryonia would never do this.

 - He sat there completely quiet and then suddenly he turned his head and looked at his mother.

 - This sudden movement doesn't fit for Bryonia.

 - Bryonia would turn the head very slowly.

 - A : Did you give him some of the dissolved remedy last night?

 - MP : Yes, a few times.

 - A : First he got a remedy in 200 potency, you gave him this in dissolution and later the doctor on duty gave him another remedy.

 - Did you sleep well?

 - P : Yes.

 - A : Did you cough last night?

 - P : No.

 - A : Do you think that he is anxious?

 - MP : No, he is not anxious.

 - A : When you are lying on the left side do you have pain?

 - P : Yes.

 - MP : When he lies on his back.

 - A : You have to lie on the right side.

 - P : Yes.

 - You see a child which gives the appearance of Bryonia.

 - He is sitting there, without moving more than necessary - apparently, and he has stitching pain on the left side.

 - I just remember that I told you that stitching pain in the lung on the level of the scapula, extending to the shoulder blade is a symptom of Myrtus communis.

 - The same stitching on the right side extending to the shoulder blade is a symptom of Nitricum acidum.

 - Another important Nitricum acidum symptom is the recurrent iritis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eye (uvea). )  on the right side.

 - A : Do you drink with large draughts?

 - P : No, not now.

 - Sometimes I do.

 - A : Did you only drink water?

 - P : A glass of chocolate milk.

 - A : Cold?

 - P : Warm chocolate milk.

 - A : Does he prefer cold or warm drinks?

 - MP : Now he prefers warm drinks.

 - Bryonia has desire warm drinks.

 - It is the most important remedy in this desire, and also Lycopodium has this.

 - A : Now?

 - MP : Yes, otherwise not.

 - A : Here it says that he rather wants somebody to be near to him?

 - MP : Yes., He doesn't like to be alone.

 - A : Did he grind his teeth last night?

 - MP : I don't know.

 - A : Does he do this often?

 - MP : I haven't heard it yet.

 - He is sitting under the lamp and he is still wearing his coat, this means that he wants it to be rather warm.

 - If Bryonia would sit in such a warm room he would take off his coat, because when it is very warm they have the tendency to faint.

 - Warmth aggravates in Bryonia.

 - A : Normally, does he like to drink milk?

 - MP : Yes.

 - A : How does it have to be?

 - MP : Cold.

 - Yesterday he got Phosphorus 200.

 - What shall I do now? It is a very difficult situation, because I feel this child is not good at all.

 - A : Is he afraid of certain animals?

 - MP : No.

 - A : Now the pain in the shoulder is gone and the pain is more concentrated in the left side of the thorax.

 - Take off your coat.

 - I have to auscultate.

 - Is he afraid of a thunderstorm?

 - MP : He likes thunderstorm.

 - A : Do you like it when it is lightening and thundering?

 - P : Yes.

 - A : Pull up your shirt.

 - Oh dear, what is this? He is so thin.

 - Has he always been so thin?

 - MP : Yes.

 - If you see a child with such a small breast you have to think of Tuberculinum immediately.

 - A : Turn around.

 - Where does it hurt?

 - P : There.

 - A : Does it hurt?

 - P : A little bit.

 - A : Where?

 - P : Here.

 - A : Yesterday we said that it was a beginning inflammation of the lung.

 - The cough is a little bit looser, isn't it?

 - Concerning the past history, has anybody of the family ever been in a sanitorium?

 - MP : I had a lung disease, there were two spots on the lungs.

 - I had to rest two months.

 - Then he was two years old.

 - A : How long have you been treated for this?

 - MP : I have been treated for one year.

 - A : What kind of tablets did you have to take?

 - MP : I don't know anymore.

 - I had to take 10 tablets a day.

 - I took them every day.

 - A : He is really extremely skinny.

 - I have to examine the glands.

 - There are a few.

 - Did he always have swollen glands?

 - MP : No.

 - A : He likes a thunderstorm?

 - MP : Yes.

 - Again a symptom for Phosphorus.

 - Sometimes Phosphorus likes a thunderstorm, not only Carcinosin and Sepia are the only remedies.

 - We had such a Phosphorus patient, who liked a thunderstorm very much.

 - A : How long does he already have a fever?

 - MP : Since yesterday.

 - A : Does he like to eat ice cream?

 - MP : Well yes.

 - MP : Very much?

 - MP : He likes it.

 - A : What kind of meat does he like to eat?

 - MP : Chicken.

 - A : What else?

 - MP : Veal.

 - A : Is he delicate in his food?

 - MP : He is not very difficult in eating, but he doesn't eat everything.

 - A : What doesn't he like to eat?

 - MP : Red cabbages and Belgian endive.

 - Further he eats everything.

 - A : Do you have dogs at home?

 - MP : No., We have two canary birds and two hamsters.

 - A : Are you afraid of dogs?

 - P : Sometimes.

 - A : What do you mean?

 - Did you notice that he is afraid of dogs?

 - MP : Yes, I think every child is afraid of dogs.

 - A : Did you ever hear that he said that he is afraid of dogs?

 - MP : I don't think that he is really afraid of dogs.

 - Maybe when they are barking.

 - A : What kind of meat does he prefer or what kind of meat doesn't he like at all?

 - MP : No, he is not so fond of meat.

 - A : Is there a particular kind of meat which he likes?

 - MP : He prefers fish.

 - He likes fish better than meat.

 - Again a Phosphorus symptom, but this is just not a Phosphorus child.

 - A : Does he like the fat of meat?

 - MP : No.

 - A : Fried bacon?

 - MP : No.

 - A : What about sausages and chopped meat?

 - MP : When it is not too often, once a week, then it is all right.

 - We are taught not to ask direct questions, but when I don't do this here I would sit here for another three days, because they don't give good information by themselves.

 - Here I am doubting between two remedies, between Phosphorus and Tuberculinum.

 - I need symptoms so that I can decide about the remedy.

 - The observation alone was not sufficient, because this was one of my first acute Tuberculinum cases with bronchopneumonia.

 - When I see a child like this, with a narrow chest and this appearance, I will look for glands and I am sure about the remedy.

 - But not at that time.

 - MP : In fact during the day he doesn't drink much.

 - A : Does he like you to be with him?

 - MP : He doesn't desire it, but he likes it.

 - He doesn't desire company, no he doesn't.

 - A : Does he have a particularly dry mouth?

 - P : Yes, I have.

 - This morning.

 - Again a Bryonia symptom.

 - A : Did he have gum bleeding?

 - P : No, never.

 - A : No bruises?

 - MP : No.

 - A : How is the fever now?

 - Put the thermometer under the axillary.

 - Whether Phosphorus was the right remedy is doubtful.

 - A : Did he perspire last night?

 - MP : No., Maybe this morning a little bit.

 - A : How do you feel compared to yesterday?

 - P : Worse.

 - A : Do you feel more sick than yesterday?

 - P : Yes.

 - In a Centre it is not good to change the prescription of a remedy of a colleague, but in this case I couldn't take any risks.

 - A : Would he eat fish every day?

 - MP : No, I don't think so.

 - A : He likes fish now and then, but not so much.

 - Is it a treat when he gets fish to eat?

 - MP : No, that desire is not so strong.

 - A : Here it says that he likes fish very much.

 - MP : On average he likes it.

 - Now you can get the idea to say, 'Another remedy which has the symptoms as well of Natrum as well of Phosphorus and likes to eat fish is Natrum phosphoricum.

 - " Every remedy has its own picture and such theories on a chemical level that a remedy consisting of two parts is only the sum of these two parts, this is pure theorizing, this is not homoeopathic.

 - A : When you are moving do you still have pain?

 - P : Yes.

 - A : 38oC.

 - How much was it yesterday?

 - MP : We didn't measure it yesterday.

 - A : So I have to see you again tomorrow.

 - I decided to put one tablet in 10M potency in his mouth immediately and to give him a tablet in 50M potency to take home, so that from time to time he can take a spoon of the dissolution and to see him again the next day.

 Follow-up (next day)

 - (The video is showing a case which has been taken before this follow-up.)

 - This is an Arsenicum hydrogenisatum case, a very interesting case.

 - It was a clear Arsenicum case, with the typical anxieties and stomach pain.

 - After Arsenicum everything became better, but the headache remained, which caused a weakness.

 - I looked it up in the Repertory under "weakness, headache, from" on page 1417 and there I found a very strange remedy, a remedy which I haven't seen before, Arsenicum hydrogenisatum.

 - The only thing I could do was to give it to her, because it was a clear Arsenicum case and all the symptoms disappeared, only the headache was still there.

 - But this is not so important, these are just details.

 - A : How did it go last night? Tell me.

 - P : I had pain.

 - I fell asleep and I didn't have pain the whole night.

 - A : What did you drink?

 - P : Of the 50M dissolution.

 - A : What about the pain now?

 - P : When I take a very deep breath there is still a stitching pain, further nothing.

 - A : Is the cough loose?

 - P : Looser than yesterday.

 - A : So this is a fantastic reaction.

 - It is a big improvement.

 - After the last remedy he felt worse the next day.

 - And now, indeed the redness in his eyes has disappeared and he doesn't look so ill anymore.

 - A : Did you eat this morning?

 - P : Yes.

 - A : Did you eat well?

 - P : Yes.

 - A : Yesterday you had 38°C fever, let's see how much it is today.

 - Put the thermometer under his axillary.

 - Did he drink much last night?

 - FP : He didn't drink much.

 - A : How did you lie in your bed?

 - P : On the right side.

 - A : Also on the back?

 - P : I did this morning.

 - I didn't have pain anymore.

 - This morning

 - I had some bleeding from the nose.

 - A : What came out of your nose this morning?

 - MP : Some blood came out of his nose.

 - Just a little bit.

 - A : It is a loose cough.

 - Do you have pain now when you are coughing?

 - P : No, no pain.

 - A : When do you have to come back for a check up?

 - MP : In June.

 - A : I would like to see him again then.

 - In the meantime he has to gain some weight.

 - He is too thin.

 - How much does he weigh now?

 - MP : I don't know.

 - I think 31 kg.

 - A : (Is weighing him) 40 kg, with his clothes on.

 - P : Why does he say I'm too thin?

 - A : 36.3oC.

 - It was under the axillary properly.

 - I will give you a tablet to take home.

 - When he has a relapse you have to give it in dissolution immediately.

 Follow-up (one month later)

 - A : On May 24, you were here the last time.

 - I gave you the remedy in 10M and 50M potency.

 - How did it develop afterwards?

 - P : Good.

 - I didn't cough anymore.

 - A : And the pain disappeared completely?

 - P : Yes.

 - A : Did you still have problems concerning the asthmatic bronchitis?

 - P : No.

 - A : I just weighed you, then you weighed 40 kg.

 - And how much is it now?

 - P : 44 kg.

 - Then I weighed 38.5 kg without my clothes on.

 - Last time I took off the shoes and my coat.

 - A : We can say with shoes and coat about 40 kg.

 - And now with shoes and coat about 44 kg.

 - It is only to see the difference after one month.

 - After the remedy you had a nose bleeding.

 - How often?

 - P : Two or three times.

 - A : Two, three times after the remedy.

 - MP : He didn't have this before.

 - A : When was the last time?

 - MP : Two weeks ago.

 - A : Spontaneously?

 - MP : What does it mean spontaneously?

 - A : Whether it started bleeding by itself.

 - MP : Yes.

 - A : All right, that's all I had to know.

 - In one month he gained 4 kilos.

 - You see what Tuberculinum can do in acute cases.

 - Now he came back in February (8 months later) and weighed 47 kg.

 - The problems with his bronchial tubes disappeared, but now he got eczema.

 - He sleeps well, in the morning he is still tired, the desire fish is rather strong, he doesn't tolerate the sun, talks very little, is very closed.

 - This is which remedy?

 - Answer : "Natrum muriaticum?"

 - A : Yes, then he got Natrum muriaticum, but we don't know yet how he reacted to this remedy.

 - Question : "Did he have nose bleeding from Phosphorus?"

A : No, nose bleeding is also a symptom of Tuberculinum.

CASE7

 Tuberculinum bovinum kent

 - Man, 25 years old

 - This patient came with an ulcerative colitis.

 - I think that the ulcerative colitis comes from a spastic colon and the large intestine is the mirror of the soul.

 - First there are psychological problems which develop to a spastic colon and when the process progresses, it is called the disease ulcerative colitis.

 - You know that this is a very severe disease and that the patient is suffering very much.

 - The colitis is accompanied with strong pain, with crampy pain.

 - Where do we find the rubric for this pain? Under rectum, "pain, tenesmus, dysentery, during" on page 630

dysentery, during : Acon., Apis., arn., ars-i., Caps., Colch., con., cop., dios., ip., Merc-c., merc., nit-ac., rheum., sulph., ter., xan.

and there you have to add Tuberculinum, also in the general rubric "tenesmus".

 - Question : "Is Carcinosin also an addition?"

 - A : I don't have it here as an addition.

 - There is another rubric, which indicates nearly the same and this is under rectum "constriction, painful" on page 608.

 - Also here you have to add Tuberculinum.

 - In the big rubric "constriction "you have to add Carcinosin and Tuberculinum, and after the subrubric "alternating with itching" : Chelidonium, you write as a new subrubric "bending amel." : Carcinosin.

 - In the rubric "constriction, painful" you see also Ignatia.

 - Think of Ignatia in case of Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, when the causation is clearly a grief.

 - Ignatia states can be deadly states going to ulceration and perforation of the intestine.

 - Also Metrorrhagia from grief can be an Ignatia state.

 - They have a grief and they don't show it, they express it differently, by bleeding, bleeding and bleeding.

 - Ignatia has the opposite, the suppression of the menses by grief

 - If a woman has problems with her mother-in-law, -you know the biggest problems are with the mother-in-law - and when suddenly these problems are solved the menses stop, it is which remedy?

 - Cimicifuga, suppressed menses from emotions.

 - They sigh as well as Ignatia, but Ignatia is not loquacious, and Cimicifuga is very loquacious.

 - Sighing and talking, that is Cimicifuga.

 - The cause is always very, very important.

 - For example, when something happened because of suppressed anger or disappointment, the first remedy is Staphisagria, even when it doesn't appear once in the local symptoms.

 - If a problem started after a very deep grief the first remedy is Ignatia.

 - They don't want to eat anymore, they get diarrhoea, and they could even die from it.

 - Therefore this remedy is one of the most important remedies in anorexia nervosa.

 - They refuse to eat.

 - Look on page 39 "eat, refuses to".

 - Always ask when the problem started.

 - A problem does not come just like this, and when it does come like that, you have to do with a constitutional or a hereditary problem, for example when there was tuberculosis or cancer in the family before.

 - This man was nearly at the end of his life when my colleague called me.

 - A : Originally you were seen by a colleague.

 - At a certain moment the case became very critical.

 - You were completely exhausted and then we examined the case together and gave 'you a remedy.

 - Then it developed into the right direction.

 - Since 1983 you have ulcerative colitis.

 - The reason for this disease is not known.

 - What do you think, why did you get this disease?

 - P : In fact, I don't know.

 - Maybe because of all kinds of situations.

 - P : Psychological situations?

 - P : Yes, I think so.

 - For example, because of the marriage and the whole situation at that time.

 - We had to marry, because my wife was pregnant.

 - She had a miscarriage, but we did marry.

 - I was still studying at that time and I had to study another three years.

 - A : What did you study?

 - P : Psychology.

 - WP : It was difficult, because he was still living in a students home and I was going to school.

 - P : And then also the examinations.

 - The miscarriage was also shortly before the examinations.

 - WP : We married in August and in December he got it the first time.

 - Then he had blood in his stool the first time.

 - P : That is three years ago.

 - A : Have you been treated allopathically for this?

 - P : In 1983 we went to a homoeopath the first time, and he diagnosed hemorrhoids.

 - It disappeared very quickly, without medicines.

 - I didn't have to take anything then.

 - I was bleeding only sporadically, but in fact it was not worth while talking.

 - A : Did the hemorrhoids disappear by themselves? Didn't he give a remedy or something else?

 - P : No, it went away by itself.

 - He thought I had hemorrhoids, but in fact it was already the beginning of colitis.

 - He prescribed medicines which I didn't take, because it went away so quickly.

 - WP : He saw him again and he got drops without examination.

 - It was a bottle with many remedies in it.

 - A : You have to had it prepared by the pharmacist with many remedies in it, and you had to take it.

 - But it didn't help?

 - P : No.

 - WP : During the holidays next year it became worse, it was again during the examination period.

 - P : There was also mucus with it, and we went to the family doctor and got medicines for it.

 - A : What did they do?

 - P : They didn't help.

 - A : You have taken them for a few years?

 - P : No., For two months.

 - A : Which therapy did you try then?

 - WP Macrobiotic diet.

 - It was not really bad, but it didn't improve.

 - A : And then? You have done this for about two months?

 - P : No, rather a long time, for three, four months.

 - WP Then we also saw a naturopath.

 - P : Before we were in Holland.

 - A : What was he?

 - P : A natural healer.

 - WP : Only for a short time, because it was rather expensive.

 - We had to drive a very long distance, and in his state it was impossible.

 - A : Were you so thin?

 - P : Not so thin as now, but rather strong.

 - WP : He went on studying the whole time, three years in fact without big problems.

 - P : Always when the examinations were finished it was better, but afterwards it came back.

 - A : You have been treated here and there and in January 1987 you came here.

 - WP : We wanted to have an earlier appointment, but it lasted awhile before I could come here.

 - A : You have been here very often, every week, until a certain moment.

 - During the first consultation my colleague wrote here that you have had ulcerative colitis for three years.

 - Now and then with diarrhoea, worse after tiredness, over-exertion.

 - Usually you had it in the evening after supper and in the morning before getting up.

 - Then you had to go out of bed urgently.

 - Normally it began after supper.

 - Diarrhoea after supper in students, is which remedy? Kali phosphoricum.

 - "Diarrhoea, supper, after" on page 615 in students who study very much, who study very strenuously.

supper, after : Hyper., iris., kali-p., trom.

 - It also might be during eating; look on page 612 "diarrhoea, eating, while", Kali phosphoricum and Ferrum and other remedies.

eating, while : Ars., chin., crot-t., Ferr., kali-p., podo., puls., trom.

 - Kali phosphoricum is one of the remedies in Crohn's disease and Colitis ulcerative, especially in young people, normally students, who become weak because of the studies and the worries.

 - A : There was quite a lot of mucus in the stool and it was shooting out.

 - Afterwards you still had 2,3 times mucus and then you could go working.

 - He didn't work yet at that time?

 - WP : In June he finished his studies and in November he found work.

 - A : Are you still working at the moment?

 - WP : Yes, he could work until the end of January.

 - A : Do you feel better after stool.

 - My colleague gave you China D 6, Silicea, Lycopodium, Kali bi, everything in D potencies.

 - This all occurred in relationship with these problems of marrying and things like that which you just told us about.

 - Further, it says that you are rather slow, closed, untidy, fear of heights, irresolute.

 - You couldn't stand very well, likes music, can't tolerate many people very well.

 - Dry skin, greasy hair, white spots on the nails, vesicles on the upper lip, when you have fever.

 - Which remedy do you think of here?

 - Natrum muriaticum.

 - A : Doesn't like gingerbread, curry and sweet-sour.

 - Likes very much highly seasoned food, milk, fat and strong beer.

 - Very thirsty with large draughts.

 - Sleeps on the left or the right side.

 - While sleeping salivation from the mouth.

 - Puts the feet out of the cover, not refreshed in the morning.

 - Then you got Sulphur, which didn't act.

 - This was in January 1987.

 - On February 19, 1987 you came in an acute state : very thirsty, large draughts, very often stool, dry lips, vertigo, diarrhoea while moving and turning in bed.

 - Then you get Bryonia 10M.

 - This was on February 19.

 - On February 20 you came back.

 - Here it says that you have been belittled by your aunt, rather closed by character, likes to drink milk, fear of dogs, and as a child you were very weak.

 - On February 21 you got Colocynthis, because you had to pull up your legs to the abdomen during cramps.

 - It was not clearly better.

 - You see, even from the beginning he had Tuberculinum symptoms : the desire milk, as a child he was very weak, fear of dogs and so on.

 - Remark : "But he didn't get it.

 - A : No, the doctor didn't give it and therefore it is good to show many cases of the same remedy, so that you have a picture of the remedy in your mind and that you have the reflex at the right moment.

 - A : The mucus was a little bit less, less pain, but you were very tired, irritable.

 - It was better with the cramps, then you weighed 50 kg.

 - On March 10, you weighed 49 kg, more cramps, worse stool, the worst period was in the afternoon, again more thirsty for large draughts, less energy, couldn't tolerate pressure on your abdomen.

 - You got Lycopodium 30.

 - On March 17, 1987 you lost weight until 46,5 kg ( 103 pound ).

 - You were very strongly emaciated.

 - With the right remedy the emaciation had to stop, but first he got this remedy, then that remedy and the weight dropped down from 50 kg to 49 kg, further to 46,5 kg.

 - A : Did you eat much the whole time or didn't You?

 - P : Normal.

 - A : Nevertheless you became thinner.

 - You walked at the age of 16 months, had a crack in the lower lip, aversion fat, anxiety about health, these were the arguments for Natrum muriaticum.

 - You had inflammations at the eyes, withdraws with fights.

 - We were thinking of Staphisagria and on March 17,1987 we chose to give Staphisagria.

 - You got this remedy in 200 potency.

 - On March 26,1987 you weighed 47 kg, so you gained half a kilo, again diarrhoea while moving and when getting up.

 - Very thirsty, good appetite.

 - The lips were still dry, but also less than before, tired with the least exertion.

 - Again Bryonia was given.

 - On April 2, the weight went down from 47 kg to 46,5 kg and here it says : alternating and changing states.

 - When you had headache you had less complaints with the diarrhoea.

 - The diarrhoea was alternating with the headache.

 - Again you see the changing symptoms : if the diarrhoea becomes better, the headache is aggravated; besides there is a good appetite with emaciation.

 - A : At night ten times diarrhoea, always with mucus.

 - Further here it says; aphthae on the tongue.

 - Likes eggs.

 - Still very thirsty, drinks with large draughts, dry mouth, cracks in the corner of the mouth.

 - This was the situation on April 2, 1987.

 - Then on April 16, you weighed 45 kg.

 - Before you got Natrum muriaticum 200 on April 9.

 - On April 16, 1987 again more strength, less stool, in a better mood, had to go less to the toilet, was dreaming about work.

 - And now it is underlined that you were on the right way.

 - On April 23, 1987 you weighed 44 kg, on April 30, 1987 53,5 kg, on May 7, 1987 it went down again to 50 kg.

 - Natrum muriaticum was repeated.

 - On June 2, 1987 no joy of living, no appetite, less energy.

 - It started again to become worse.

 - On June 2, 1987 Natrum muriaticum 10M.

 - On June 10, 1987 again Bryonia 10M.

 - On June 8, Lycopodium 6 LM, afterwards Sulphur 6 LM.

 - You see the doubt of the doctor.

 - A : Then the moment that you weighed only 41,5 kg.

 - The situation was very critical, you were burned out.

 - You were lying in the observation room, very pale, perspiring very much, hasn't been like this before.

 - WP : But then it was also very warm.

 - A : I saw you and I prescribed you something.

 - It was remarkable that you were perspiring very much at night, you were exhausted.

 - Then you were perspiring every night.

 - P : When I had go get up I was already perspiring.

 - A : A second point was that you were very thirsty and you drank especially milk.

 - I asked you then.

 - And it had to be cold milk.

 - P : Yes.

 - At that moment the doctor asked me to come with him and to see the patient.

 - Then he was even more emaciated than now and very tired.

 - I asked him about the thirst and his wife said that he drank more than one litre of cold milk every day.

 - At that moment I only had to think over some things shortly and the remedy was clear.

 - If you see somebody like this man the first remedy you have to think of is Tuberculinum.

 - You still see this consumption appearance.

 - He is suffering from a consumption disease - that is the typical Tuberculinum appearance.

 - A : Third, we remember that you were afraid of dogs.

 - And how much did you weigh then?

 - P : 40 kg.

 - A : You liked fat?

 - P : No, not so much.

 - A : But surely cold milk.

 - And what about ice cream?

 - P : Yes, I like to eat it.

 - WP : He has stayed away from it for quite a long time, because we thought that he was not allowed to eat it.

 - A : In the past history the tubercular tests were positive.

 - Whether your mother had tuberculosis you didn't know exactly.

 - Do you know it in the meantime?

 - P : Yes, she had.

 - If you take a case don't forget to ask about the family history.

 - Sometimes you will need this information.

 - If somebody in the family has had tuberculosis, this is an important indication for the remedy, a Tuberculinum symptom.

 - A : I have to stress it explicitly that your mother had tuberculosis; And his tuberculin test was positive regularly.

 - I can't describe your situation at that time, but it was very had.

 - You didn't have an appetite anymore, you were really doing badly.

 - Do you remember the first case? The child of the gynecologist from North Germany? Here is somebody from North Germany and before she told me that she has known the family for many years.

 - The mother had Hodgkin's disease, and what did you tell me about her?

 - Afterwards I could confirm that the mother was Tuberculinum.

 - It was a very vivacious, lively woman, but she was doing very badly.

 - She has been ill very often, first because of the Hodgkin's disease, second because of a late pregnancy with thrombosis and so on.

 - Nevertheless she has always been very vivacious and active, and when I heard this yesterday, I could understand that the mother would have needed Tuberculinum - so the grandmother of the child, we saw yesterday as the first case."

 - She said that the grandmother was very active, although she was very ill.

 - Where can we find this? In which rubric? Hopeful, when somebody still has much courage.

 - Notwithstanding this serious disease she is still hopeful.

 - You see in the rubric "hopeful" on page 52 Aconitum, Ferrum magneticum, Hydrastis, Senega and Tuberculinum.

HOPEFUL : Acon., ferr-ma., hydr., seneg., tub.

 - A : You got the remedy in 10M potency on July 4,1987.

 - On July 4 he got Tuberculinum in 10M poteney for the first time and now it is August 19.

 - A : At that time there was a big panic.

 - Tell me how was the reaction to the first remedy which we gave at that time?

 - P : The first days it didn't improve at all, just a little, but then the Physical situation became better.

 - A : Did you get some more appetite?

 - P : Yes., Again more strength, more power, more energy.

 - A : You didn't lie so much in bed anymore, and on July 17, 1987 you weighed 40 kg, on August 6 already 41 kg.

 - The general situation was better, you were walking about much more, still diarrhoea at night and in the evening.

 - Very good appetite, numb feeling in the arms.

 - Is that right?

 - P : Yes, in the hands, but it was improving then.

 - A : On July 4 - it is written here in between - you weighed 38,5 kg.

 - After the 10M potency, on July 17 you weighed 40 kg, so 1,5 kg more and 14 days later again I kg more.

 - You got Foliata squallosa twice and how are you doing now?

 - P : It is about the same.

 - My physical situation hasn't improved much.

 - WP : Especially concerning the intestine, but he says much more, he is more lively.

 - A : But the physical situation doesn't improve much.

 - A : Since when?

 - P : Since about one week.

 - If they say something like that they want to be cured very quickly.

 - He says that he is not so bad as before, but it doesn't improve either.

 - Be careful in such a case and don't do anything, you could slow down the curing process.

 - If he has a relapse you can repeat the remedy If you have waited for one or two weeks and if the relapse is clear.

 - P : Concerning the diarrhoea it has been constant for quite a while, although it is a little bit less the last days, the last weeks, especially during the day.

 - The frequency of the stool has decreased.

 - A : Do you still have pain?

 - P : Yes, when I sit on the toilet.

 - A : During the stool?

 - P : Yes, during the stool, but it is much less than before.

 - A : Has it improved since the last remedy or since when are the cramps less?

 - P : Yes, I think since the last remedy.

 - A : Since July 4 the cramps are better.

 - Do you still have blood in the stool?

 - P : Now and then.

 - WP : It has been away for quite awhile, also before the last remedy, but now, since about 14 days, since we were here the last time, it started again, it went away for a while and now it is a little bit more.

 - It goes up and down.

 - A : What kind of colour is the blood? Is it dark - or bright red?

 - P : Both.

 - Sometimes when there is mucus with it, it is pink and sometimes it can be really red

 - A : But sometimes it is also dark?

 - P : No.

 - A : What about the cramps in the abdomen? Do they still appear often?

 - P : Yes, during stool I still have them or just before I have to go to the toilet, just before the stool.

 - This was one month after the remedy.

 - I didn't do anything.

 Follow-up (may 5,1988)

 - (The patient is hard to recognize, he gained weight.)

 - This is now 10 months later and you hardly recognize him, he looks so well.

 - A : On July 4,1987 I saw you in a very critical situation and I gave you a remedy.

 - Since then you are doing well.

 - Tell me, how much did you weigh then?

 - P : 42,5 kg.

 - A : How did it develop?

 - P : Especially my physical situation has improved, also my weight.

 - A : How much do you weigh now?

 - P : 60 kg.

 - A : So you gained weight from 42 kg to 60 kg?

 - P : I even weighed 38 kg.

 - A : That's right, in July 1987 you started gaining weight.

 - When I gave you the remedy the first time you weighed 38,5 kg.

 - In August 1987 you weighed 42 kg and now 60 kg.

 - P : Yes.

 - A : Your face also looks a little bit more full.

 - What about the diarrhoea?

 - P : The stool is not completely normal, but it is all right.

 - A : Did you start working in the meantime?

 - P : Yes.

 - A : What kind of profession do you have?

 - P : I'm an educator.

 - A : This is a fantastic development, isn't it?

 - P : Yes.

 - A : What did the medical officer say?

 - P : First I haven't had to go to the cheek up for quite a long time.

 - In March, I said myself I didn't want any sick leave anymore.

 - A : You started working again?

 - P : First, I was unemployed for 11/2 months.

 - A : Did you go to the medical officer again?

 - P : No.

 - A : Here, I see that erythrocyte sedimentation rate was 36 in May 1988, Hb 8, 6.

 - There were no other examinations, were there?

 - P : Not since January.

 - A : In January the erythrocyte sedimentation rate was normal, the Hb remained the same.

 - The iron was very low.

 - Now, we will still do a blood examination.

 - How often do you have stool a day?

 - P : A few times.

 - Especially in the morning.

 - 2 - 3 times, during the day usually not, sometimes still in the evening.

 - A : Do you still have blood in the stool?

 - P : Yes, still a little bit and also a little bit mucus.

 - A : Sometimes, or always?

 - P : Nearly always.

 - The stool is not really solid.

 - A : We can't say that you are really cured, but that you are on the right way.

 - Your remedy was given the first time on July 4 of last year.

 - In the meantime you got lower potencies.

 - High potencies on July 17, on August 19, 1987, on February 16, 1988 twice 10M, twice 50M.

 - All right, that's it.

 - I only wanted to know how you were doing.

 - You see the result with the right homoeopathic remedy.

 - In the meantime he didn't find any other remedy and how often my colleague repeated Tuberculinum I don't know, but it doesn't matter.

 - Remark : "The hair is also darker."

 - A : Yes, the hair is healthier.

 - Before they looked like the hair of somebody who got antimycotics.

 - They were dead.

 - Now it is dark and lively.

CASE8

 Bronchitis, metrorrhagia

 Tuberculinum bovinum kent

 - Woman, 48 years old

 - A : You came because of all kinds of complaints.

 - But first I want to say something about the past history.

 - Concerning your family it is important to know that your mother died of cancer and that your brother had a cerebral haemorrhage.

 - Your father was killed in an accident.

 - You had twice tuberculosis between the age of 9 years and 16 years with a strong positive tuberculin test.

 - You are a nurse.

 - Where do you work?

 - P : Now at the plasma centre.

 - It is strange, I don't know why, but the frequency of Tuberculinum in nurses in bigger than in any other profession.

 - I don't know why, I just observed it.

 - A : Your problem was originally general tiredness, complaints from flatulence, which recurred regularly and a strong desire for chocolate, for sweets.

 - P : But not all kinds of sweets, only chocolate.

 - I don't eat cake or bonbon, but only chocolate.

 - A : The flatulence occurred only after cabbages and onions.

 - P : Yes.

 - A : Now, I have to look up something, because I didn't treat you before, but only since 1986 or at the end of 1985.

 - Your problems were then swollen eyelids, above and under the eyes., Quite a lot of flatulence, especially in the evening and pain in the right elbow, a kind of tennis elbow.

 - P : Yes.

 - A : With a clear lack of self-confidence.

 - P : It is still very strong.

 - Especially at work.

 - I don't dare to do anything.

 - I'm always afraid I will hurt people.

 - I shouldn't have it, I should go on.

 - A : You are not only afraid just before you stick with a needle to take blood, but you are afraid of many other things.

 - P : Yes, it is very clear, especially, for example, in injections.

 - A : It is better with the swollen eyelids, it is not so clear anymore.

 - Concerning your character you have a lack of self-confidence in everything you have to do?

 - P : Yes, I have a fear of failure.

 - A : On the other hand you are very conservative by nature.

 - P : yes, that's right.

 - A : Here I wrote down that only the family is important for you.

 - P : It is a very big importance for me.

 - A : I call it often collective egoism.

 - P : It is so.

 - Although I can get away from it.

 - A : There are elements in the direction of a conservatism.

 - It is not the duty which is the central point for you, I think it is more the family, isn't it?

 - P : Also the duty.

 - I don't say easily, "I don't feel well today, I won't go to work."

 - A : You don't do it?

 - P : No., I would even go to work when I'm ill.

 - Except when I really feel bad, then I stay at home.

 - What is here the differential diagnosis? Between which two remedies?

 - Kali carbonicum and Kali bichromicum; the duty in Kali carbonicum and the collective egoism in Kali bichromicum.

 - A : What do you think about the youth of nowadays, the behaviour of the youth and things like that?

 - P : What do you mean?

 - A : The way they are at present, they are rather loose.

 - Is this something you get annoyed by?

 - P : No, if you have children of your own about this age you learn very much about it.

 - A : I think that you are conservative, but you are rather tolerant.

 - Your eldest son went to America to do his last year of school.

 - These are things you have to deal with.

 - You don't mix up with it.

 - P : I am able to release the children.

 - A : Anyway, you have easily pain in the right region of the kidneys.

 - P : Yes, before.

 - Now, it is completely gone.

 - A : You also went through a development.

 - Before I wrote down : sometimes has complaints of varicose veins, desires chocolate, complaints at the right kidney, the swollen eyelids and a lack of selfconfidence, excessive flatulence and you slept on the right side.

 - Which is the remedy?

 - Lycopodium.

 - A : Can you also lie on the left side?

 - P : Yes, sometimes on the left side, but usually I sleep on the right side.

 - A : Then I gave you a remedy, let's call this remedy number one.

 - You have reacted very well to this remedy for quite a long time, for example, with herpes at the nose.

 - At a certain moment you also had pain in the lower limbs, especially in the right leg.

 - All your complaints were more on the right side.

 - In 1986 I gave you a remedy.

 - You have been in treatment since 1984, but in February 1985 you got the remedy for the first time.

 - In November 1986, so one year later, in October 1987 also, and again in April 1988.

 - But then comes the next step you made.

 - I gave your so called constitutional remedy in April 1988 again in 10M potency.

 - You came back this year on July 4 and said, "I have very strong bleeding of the menses."

 - It was very bad.

 - How old are you.

 - P : I'll be 47.

 - With one dose of Lycopodium every year she was doing very well for 4 years.

 - Now she comes with very, very strong bleeding of the menses and she is 47 years old.

 - Which rubric can we take for this?

 - "Metrorrhagia, climacteric period" on page 730.

climacteric period : Alet., aloe., arg-m., Calc., carb-v., croc., ferr., kali-c., Lach., lyc., med., murx., nux-v., plb., psor., puls., sabin., sang., sec.,Sep., Sulph., tril., ust.

 - A : These strong menstruation pains meant for me that you were in the climacteric period.

 - P : Yes, that was also my first idea.

 - A : Second the herpes was good after the treatment, after the first remedy.

 - But there was always a vertigo in the morning while waking up.

 - Third, the bleeding was painless.

 - You hardly had pain with it.

 - Which is the first remedy in painless metrorrhagia?

painless : Bov., calc., croc., ham., Kali-fer., mag-c., mill., nux-m., plat., sabin., sec., ust.

 - Kali ferro-cyanatum.

 - Kali ferro-cyanatum in people with a Kali character, who are very conservative and to whom duty is very important.

 - A : You have taken iron tablets for some months.

 - Who prescribed you these?

 - P : Nobody.

 - At work there are many iron tablets.

 - I thought it can't be bad.

 - Maybe this is the cause for the metrorrhagia.

 - She is working in a centre for plasma, where everybody who donated blood gets iron tablets.

 - She didn't feel well and therefore she started taking these iron tablets.

 - What happened?

 - The abuse of iron.

 - Often Ferrum is the right remedy when there is a lack of iron and when they take iron it improves.

 - You often see this in pregnancy.

 - Women in general become pale and with the slightest thing they blush.

 - One of our secretaries who was pregnant came in the kitchen where I was supervising a case I noticed how pale she was and I said, 'My God, you look pale!" She blushed immediately, because I said this in the presence of other doctors.

 - She took Ferrum and she was doing well afterwards.

 - "Iron, after abuse of on page 1369 these are the remedies which can start bleeding after the administration of iron : Pulsatilla, Arsenicum, Sulphur and Zincum.

IRON, after abuse of : Ars., puls., sulph., zinc.

 - A : You have taken them for one month already?

 - P : Yes.

 - A : In Homoeopathy we know that this can lead to problems.

 - Then we told you to stop taking these iron tablets immediately.

 - I gave you a remedy which fit for the bleeding and then the bleeding stopped very quickly.

 - How quickly?

 - P : The same day.

 - And which remedy is complementary to Lycopodium? Pulsatilla.

 - A : On July 4, 1988 I gave you the remedy, the loss of blood disappeared, you had regular menses again for two months.

 - You came on August 16, 1988, so 14 days ago.

 - The new problem was hoarseness and then you got influenza.

 - Can you give me some symptoms of the influenza?

 - P : I had a terrible heavy head and was tired.

 - I was very tired and I also had fever.

 - A : What else did you feel in your body?

 - P : I just had a big need for sleeping.

 - A : It didn't hurt everywhere?

 - P : Yes, it did.

 - A little bit, not really pain in the muscles, but I felt uncomfortable.

 - A : Did it hurt?

 - P : No, not so bad.

 - A : So the main complaint was the tiredness.

 - Not the pain in the muscles?

 - P : No, not so much.

 - A : Although, the symptom was present?

 - P : Yes.

 - A : Then you also told me that your head and chest were obstructed.

 - When you came here you were coughing for 14 days.

 - P : Yes.

 - A : Although the tiredness was better than at the time of the bleeding?

 - P : Yes.

 - A : You said, "The cough is worse when I get in bed."

 - Was it because you became warm in bed?

 - P : That's right.

 - She said that the cough was worse in a warm room.

 - Look on page 810.

room : Acon., all-c., ambr., anan., ant-c., apis., arn., ars., brom., bry., Coc-c., com., cub., dig., dros., dulc., iod., ip., kali-s., laur., lyc., mag-p., med., mez., nat-a., nat-c., nit-ac., phos., Puls., pyrog., sanic., seneg., spong., sulph., tub., verat.

 - Pulsatilla is capital, but she got Pulsatilla and she got the cough only afterwards.

 - Also Tuberculinum is second degree in this rubric.

 - Tuberculinum states come like a thief in the night.

 - You don't expect them.

 - If you are treating somebody for four, five years, suddenly he is there, you don't expect it and you don't think of Tuberculinum in these patients whom you know for such a long time.

 - In the subrubric "warm, room, entering, from open air" and 'going from, to cold air, or vice versa, agg." you have to add Carcinosin.

 - The aggravation in a warm room is not only Pulsatilla, but also Tuberculinum.

 - She also said that it is worse when getting warm in bed, Tuberculinum is not there.

 - The first remedy here is Causticum.

 - It also started with a hoarseness, and Causticum also has this soreness, which is ameliorated by motion.

 - In the rubric "cough 'bed, warm, on becoming, in, agg.

 - "you can add Tuberculinum If you want, but it is sufficient if you know that the aggravation in a warm room is a Tuberculinum symptom.

 - A : Then you didn't like meat.

 - I asked you this question, because I thought of a certain remedy.

 - P : Yes, that's right.

 - A : "But I like to drink milk", you said.

 - And which temperature does the milk have to have?

 - P : Cold or warm.

 - A : What do you prefer?

 - P : Cold.

 - A : You also had loss of urine while coughing and the mucus which was coming up was thick, but you swallowed it.

 - "Expectoration, thick" on page 819 is a very big rubric and Tuberculinum is capital there.

THICK : Acon., agar., aloe., alumn., am-m., ambr., ant-t., arg-m., Arg-n., ars., atro., aur-m., bry., cact., calc-s., calc., carb-ac., carb-an., caust., chlor.,cist., cob., coc-c., cycl., dulc., ery-a., eucal., eupi., ferr-ar., ferr-i., ferr-p., ferr., glon., ham., Hep., hura., Hydr., ip., Kali-bi., kali-chl., kali-p., kalm., kreos., lac-c., laur., lyc., mag-m., merc-i-r., naja., nat-p., oena., ol-j., op., ox-ac., phos., phyt., puls., pyrog., raph., ruta., sacc., sang., senec., seneg., sep.,Sil., squil., stann., stram., sulph., syph., tarent., thuj., Tub., ust., zinc.

 - In "expectoration, thick, morning" you have to add Natrum phosphoricum.

 - Did I tell you that Natrum phosphoricum is one of the remedies which is indicated in Dupuytren's contracture? And do you also know the other remedies in Dupuytren's contracture?

 - Plumbum, Causticum, Ruta, Sulphur, Natrum muriaticum and Lycopodium, but Natrum phosphoricum is a very important remedy, especially in diabetics who are treated with insulin.

 - It is a very important remedy for contractions, also in the bends of the knee.

 - In the rubric "expectoration, yellow, morning" on page 821 Tuberculinum and Natrum phosphoricum have to be added.

 - A : During the bleeding you were very emotional.

 - You were weeping easily.

 - P : Yes.

 - A : The hyper-emotionality went away when you came in a new situation.

 - I asked you an additional question, "Do you like to travel?" You answered, "I like to travel."

 - P : Yes.

 - A : Can you tell me something more about it?

 - P : I don't like the sea so much.

 - Although I do, but not to lie at the beach.

 - I rather prefer to drive somewhere where I can walk or visit something.

 - A : Does this mean that you like to see something or that you prefer to go to the mountains?

 - P : I like to go to the mountains, but I also like to see something.

 - I prefer an active holiday.

 - The desire to travel means in Tuberculinum not that they drive to Spain to lie at the beach.

 - It is a real desire to travel ' in the mountain with a rucksack, from village to village.

 - It is something different in Sepia women, who go to the South and lie in the sun for 14 days.

 - A : So your expectoration was green.

 - P : I think so.

 - A : You said so.

 - P : The expectoration from the nose.

 - A : This was a very critical situation.

 - P : I didn't feel well at that time.

 - A : Indeed, medically speaking it was a serious situation which probably could go in the direction of a pleuritis.

 - I gave you the remedy in 10M potency, the remedy number three, one tablet.

 - It was on August 16, 1988 and I told you that I had to see you again within 4 days, because I thought it was rather serious.

 - On August 20 the hoarseness was much better.

 - The nose was good, the cough was still there when you became warm.

 - The expectoration became slightly less.

 - Already one day after taking the remedy it was much better.

 - P : Yes.

 - A : On August 27, four days ago, I saw you again.

 - You were still coughing a little bit, the hoarseness was completely gone.

 - You could work better, were less quickly tired.

 - If you cough for quite a longtime there was still some expectoration and still coughing from warmth.

 - But in general a clear improvement.

 - This was the last check up, and now how are you doing?

 - P : Better, it is gone.

 - A : Everything is gone.

 - P : Yes

 - A : This was your history.

 - Are there other things which you have to remark? to tell you that I had very painful glands

 - P : At that time I forgot during the influenza, here just under my ears, at both sides.

 - A : Did you have pain while swallowing?

 - P : Only when I touched them.

 - It didn't have anything to do with swallowing or anything else.

 - A : Did the pain extend to somewhere?

 - P : Yes, to my ears.

 - It has remained for quite a long time.

 - It went away very slowly.

 - A : Now everything is all right.

 - You sleep well, you eat well, you can work well.

 - I forgot to say, but on August 16 you got the remedy in 10M potency and on August 20 I repeated the remedy in 50M potency.

 - To avoid all the risks I decided to give another high potency.

 - I gave her Tuberculinum 10M and 50M.

 - Often it is so when you give Pulsatilla and Pulsatilla doesn't work you have to think of Tuberculinum.

 - Both remedies have many identical symptoms and modalities, so that they are easily mixed up with each other.

 - Often you can't decide about it, unless you give Pulsatilla and you see that it doesn't-help, it must be Tuberculinum.

 - The reason why she came into a Tuberculinum state was the weakness because of the bleeding.

 - If there is a Tuberculinum state and then a loss of fluids or other big problems arise, they become weak and the Tuberculinum layer appears.

 - In this patient the Tuberculinum layer appeared after the abuse of iron and the metrorrhagia.

 - This case shows again how important it is to be flexible.

 - It is not only one remedy which cures the patient.

CASE9

 Diarrhoea

 Tuberculinum bovinum kent

 - Woman, 70 years old

 - This is a woman from high society.

 - She comes from Amsterdam or Den Haag and now she is here with her brother who is a bishop.

 - Immediately you will see her behaviour and recognize with which remedy I treated her before.

 - Now she comes with constant diarrhoea and abdominal pain and the constitutional remedy didn't help.

 - A : Put on this microphone, otherwise the people don't understand you, because you are a very particular case.

 - P : Yes?

 - Is my voice not too loud?

 - A : No, so they will understand you better.

 - P : Oh, I thought I had a very clear voice.

 - A : But here is the amplifier.

 - P : Now I'm in contact with the other people?

 - A : The other doctors in the auditorium are following the course and therefore I have you come here; because it was very difficult at that time.

 - P : I prefer to sit in a corner, then I don't have to worry about anybody.

 - I don't like to be the centre of attention.

 - A : You are in treatment here for quite a long time because of all kinds of complaints.

 - You were doing rather well on Lachesis and Sulphur, but then a while ago you came with a kind of diarrhoea.

 - Tell me how did it start exactly.

 - P : In fact I don't know anymore.

 - I'm really so thoughtless with these kind of things.

 - I think this is going on for quite a long time.

 - Anyway it started with vomiting.

 - I still remember, because otherwise I don't have to vomit.

 - Many children aren't in the world for one minute or they start vomiting, but I didn't.

 - My problem is more that everything is constipated.

 - Now, I speak softer because of this microphone.

 - A : It is my fault.

 - When did it start?

 - P : I don't know exactly, but I think it was May 1988.

 - A : Yes, May 1988.

 - Then you got diarrhoea.

 - P : No., It was an ileus (Inability of the intestine (bowel) to contract normally and move waste out of the body.) ; my children who are medical specialists at least say that it was an ileus.

 - Nothing is coming out, but you become crazy from pain.

 - I couldn't talk because of the pain.

 - Fortunately, my brother was at home, and the only thing I could say was that I had very much pain.

 - Then I knew something was wrong.

 - Otherwise I don't go very easily to see the doctor.

 - So Dr.

 - X didn't come, he came twice a day, but it was impossible, we tried to get him here, and we could call up the anthroposophist, as they call them, and he sent me to the hospital as an emergency case.

 - I think the emergency was in May 1988.

 - A : You don't have to say this so exactly.

 - P : My brother said I shouldn't go to the hospital.

 - A : Is your brother the bishop?

 - P : Yes, he was at home by coincidence.

 - I said to the anthroposophist, this and this is going on with me.

 - He is a mad doctor, but a good one.

 - He said it was an emergency.

 - It takes quite a long time before I go to the hospital, because I often come out of the hospital more sick than on being hospitalized.

 - Every bacterium affects me.

 - I reacted a little bit to the injections.

 - It was a whole story of suffering.

 - A : You have been in the hospital for that?

 - P : No, no.

 - After these injections the abdomen became a little bit softer, because I had an abdomen like a real ball.

 - I don't know what it was exactly.

 - I had terrible pain and said, "I become mad from pain."

 - I didn't say it like this, I'm reserved, when I don't know the doctor.

 - It took a little while and then he said, 'You can try it at home."

 - We tried it at home and afterwards I also got through this.

 - A : Anyway I saw you because of this problem.

 - And then you called it an ileus, that's the way you explained it.

 - P : Yes, the intestine was caught.

 - I escaped death by a hair's breadth.

 - Normally, I don't mind these things, in fact I'm rather thoughtless about my health, but at that moment the pain was really indescribable, so terrible that I could only moan and say that my brother had to give the absolution.

 - This is a real Sulphur cliche, "Oh, it was so painful!" It doesn't come where it should come from; you get the feeling that they are acting.

 - A : So we can say that the pain occurs suddenly.

 - P : Yes., I go upstairs and then suddenly I think, "What is this?" I have to lie on my bed and sleep.

 - I was half unconscious.

 - A : Was the pain accompanied with diarrhoea?

 - P : No, I was just constipated.

 - A : But it was afterwards, afterwards came the diarrhoea.

 - P : Yes., There you see again the thoughtlessness about me.

 - I trust you and then I just forget what it was.

 - My son also said so, that I forget everything I had.

 - That's right.

 - But it started with bleeding : there was only liquid with some blood coming out and therefore I became anxious.

 - When it was dark blood, I would have been very anxious, but with this bright blood I didn't worry at all.

 - I may say so because my children are doctors as well.

 - A : You told me that it was shooting out sometimes.

 - P : Yes, sometimes it still happens.

 - But I think I have more pain when I go 5 to 6 times to the toilet.

 - After a while the stool becomes a little bit solid.

 - I said, "Doctor X, listen how my intestine is doing."

 - But I think I had this already for quite a long time, because I had to walk for quite a long time.

 - I had a kind of poison in my blood, but now I got rid of it.

 - Now, I'm more cheerful, lively.

 - How should I say it in Belgian? Normally, I'm always interested in societies of arts and things like that, but now I was so ill that I wasn't interested in anything.

 - A : Anyway, the time before the last time you were here you had quite a lot of pain.

 - P : Yes.

 - A : But - as you told me - it was shouting out, the liquid was shooting out.

 - P : At is still so, like a cannon.

 - It still happens, especially during the night.

 - Sometimes I get up at two, three o'clock at night.

 - A : Are there nights where you don't have to get up?

 - P : No.

 - A : You have to get up a few times at night?

 - P : Once I am up and I'm in movement it is a little bit better, then the diarrhoea becomes a little bit more solid, not real solid, but a little bit more solid.

 - A : Then you also told me that the diarrhoea was less especially during the day when you are busy.

 - P : Yes, it is always better when I'm in movement.

 - A : But in the morning you have to get out of bed.

 - P : After midnight it starts.

 - A : After midnight.

 - At what time is this for you?

 - P : 4 : 00 o'clock, I also got it at 3 : 00 o'clock.

 - A : In the beginning it was more?

 - P : Many times I haven't seen my bed at all the whole night.

 - When I slept twice very shortly during the the night, then it was already quite a lot.

 - Everywhere you can recognize Sulphur in her: her behaviour, the theorizing, she is haughty and the kind of diarrhoea, so that she wakes up with urging at night, diarrhoea after midnight, this is all Sulphur.

 - I gave her Sulphur, but it didn't change anything at all.

 - Also her hair and her clothes are clear Sulphur symptoms.

 - Her hair is very messy and her clothes are not really clean.

 - Indeed, she is wearing very expensive clothes, but they are very dirty.

 - She doesn't care about her appearance.

 - A : So the situation has been very critical for two months.

 - You didn't sleep anymore, had to get out of the bed constantly, because you had diarrhoea.

 - I gave you two remedies which didn't act.

 - But then on October 26, I examined you thoroughly and gave you another remedy.

 - I saw you on November 10 again and you told me, 'It was a fantastic development, an enormous amelioration."

 - I was also very satisfied.

 - First she got Nux vomica and then Sulphur and then because of her story which you will hear, the remedy which helped her.

 - She still has diarrhoea a little bit, but I think that she is exaggerating considerably when she says that she still has to get out of bed and so on.

 - I'm sure that there is a very big amelioration, if you compare the situation before the remedy with the situation after the remedy.

 - A : You live in Holland and you have a weekend home in Belgium.

 - P : Yes.

 - A : I heard that your brother is a bishop, who travels regularly.

 - P : Yes.

 - A : And you like to travel yourself?

 - P : Yes., Now I go with him to Athens.

 - There is a congress about alternative medicines.

 - Doctor X is the godfather and then I go with him.

 - But I don't always go with him, because I don't understand anything of it.

 - A : So you like to travel.

 - Another element is - I also asked you, did you have diarrhoea before in your life?" and you told me, "Before when I was a young girl..." tell me, you got typhus?

 - P : Yes, I know a thing or two about that.

 - I was nearly dead.

 - My parents didn't want to send their children to the hospital, it was very strange, but it didn't happen much in our family.

 - There was always a kind of behaviour, of solving things without the help of the doctors.

 - I'm also a person who doesn't easily go to the doctor.

 - Doctor X also says, in fact you always come when it is too late".

 - I think that's not the fault.

 - Probably I got typhus by drinking contaminated milk.

 - She got typhus from drinking milk.

 - What does this mean?

 - Probably it was an intestinal tuberculosis which she calls typhus.

 - A : How old were you then?

 - P : I think 15 or 16 years old.

 - I have been in the hospital for nearly one year.

 - I was on the black list.

 - I didn't get better at all.

 - At that time there were no antibiotics.

 - A : What did you live on?

 - P : A kind of milk and then I got something like puree.

 - This here is the same story as the patient with the ulcerative colitis.

 - Also he had a constant diarrhoea and he drank only milk.

 - P : Then they thought that I nearly got over it, I was doing a little bit better, but then I got an enormous high fever, I was nearly gone with the fever.

 - They said that I had to drink milk, but this is not my way, I don't like milk, I want solid food.

 - Then a friend of us came, who was a specialist and said, "This is so in typhus."

 - And I didn't worry anymore, I drank the milk and then I was better afterwards.

 - In fact, I'm as healthy as can be.

 - The only fault is that I'd worn myself out.

 - A : Now, you still drink milk?

 - P : At least a mug, I can't tolerate much of this mucus.

 - A : On October 26 it says, "I drink half a litre cold milk."

 - P : Yes, I drank this at that time.

 - The eldest daughter said to me, "Well yes, it doesn't have to be that cold, but it may not be warm either.

 - You have to take the nutrients.

 - A : So, we can describe the case as a chronic diarrhoea which is still there partly, an ileus, constipation of the intestine, which finally ended with an excessive diarrhoea.

 - P : I call "diarrhoea" when it is still a little bit solid, but with me it was just watery.

 - A : So we call it diarrhoea, when it just runs through, whether it is a little bit bound or watery, is not so important.

 - P : Yes, but I see it differently.

 - They gave me all kinds of medicine that time.

 - The anthroposophist gave me a remedy which made me completely dull.

 - I don't know what it was, but well yes, this is another case.

 - Doctor X gave me TYPHOLAX and ANGANO, but it didn't help anything at all.

 - A : Now compared to before it is better.

 - For how much percentage?

 - P : It is really much better, as long as there is no bright blood with it.

 - It still occurs in the morning, after midnight, and I don't have it anymore during the day.

 - The funny thing is that the digestion of the food is much better, but the peristalsis doesn't want to throw it out.

 - It is terribly painful.

 - A : What do you mean?

 - P : Every time I think I have to go to the toilet, but nothing is coming out.

 - I can't press it out.

 - If I could go to the toilet twice in the morning, it would be over I think.

 - Then I wouldn't have problems.

 - A : You also became very weak.

 - Now you have become stronger?

 - P : Yes a great deal.

 - On Sunday my eldest daughter was with me and she said, "Mamma, you have to gain some weight, you have to take care that you don't loose weight!' That's the way she said, she can say it so nice.

 - 'You have to eat something in between meals.

 - You have to get something in your abdomen."

 - A : How is your appetite? Do you eat meat?

 - P : No., Hardly not.

 - I don't like it so much.

 - A : No meat at all?

 - P : No., I eat a very little piece just for the sociability and the politeness.

 - I also can't see eggs.

 - Before I liked them so much, but now I can't see an egg at all.

 - It is stupid.

 - Then I boil them hard and cut them on the bread and then they still lie in the refrigerator.

 - I always have the need to drink a glass of wine, but I don't tolerate it.

 - A while ago doctor X, from Pasteur from France, gave me a bottle of medicine.

 - It was against the influenza, and there was an influenza in my region and I thought, "I take this, it can't do any harm."

 - And there was very much alcohol in it, so that I felt bad afterwards.

 - I shouldn't do things like that.

 - A : When you were 16, 17 years old did they tell you that it was typhus?

 - P : Yes, exactly.

 - A : Did people die from it?

 - P : Of course, you couldn't get healthy from it, there was no method of curing.

 - A : Did you see other people at that time who had typhus?

 - P : Yes, it might be, because I was lying in a shed.

 - But most of the time I was unconscious.

 - It was completely mad.

 - Because I have a straight character I trusted, when somebody said something to me.

 - My father was an officer, I come from an officers family, my brother also was a military man.

 - He was killed in action.

 - Only my son didn't want to go there.

 - A : So, what was I talking about, about typhus?

 - P : Yes, the people were dying, but I don't know much about it.

 - The sister, an old sweet friend of my uncle was a nun, she knew that there was no possibility of cure.

 - A : They were all dying?

 - P : Yes.

 - A : Did the people also cough?

 - P : I don't know.

 - I was too ill.

 - Besides, I didn't cough.

 - A : You didn't?

 - P : No, only when I was choking.

 - P : Was there somebody in your family suffering from his lungs?

 - P : No., My mother died when the German soldiers came from the front.

 - My father was killed.

 - He was always going to my mother's grave at the churchyard and then he was killed in an accident.

 - A : How did your mother die?

 - P : I just told you that the German soldiers came.

 - A : A kind of cholera.

 - P : Many people died of this.

 - In the evening we went to the children's nurse, we were three children.

 - We were riding on a bike somewhere and by telephone we heard that probably she was infected.

 - I didn't have it.

 - But many people died because of that.

 - They didn't go to the hospital.

 - Later with the death of my mother...

 - A : So your mother had cholera.

 - P : Yes, choleritis or something like that.

 - In the same night when we went away in the evening, they said that my mother was not well.

 - And everywhere where she was lying they used a disinfectant.

 - The doctor said that before the evening starts everything has to be treated with an antiseptic.

 - The washing had to soak 24 hours and then I had to do the wash.

 - I was not allowed to take it to the laundry.

 - After her nobody died.

 - A : Was she the only one in your family who died of cholera?

 - It is strange : she had typhus herself, later chronic diarrhoea and her mother had so called cholera.

 - P : She lost quite a lot of liquid, she needed boiled tea every five minutes.

 - When I wanted to carry it inside they always said, "No, your mother is sleeping."

 - I didn't have energy to fight against them.

 - Maybe she got too little liquid.

 - The professor came in the morning.

 - At noon I was allowed to see her and said, "Mamma, you stay with us."

 - She opened her eyes and although she was a little bit unconscious she said, "Oh, I already hear the angels sing."

 - I'm still thinking about that.

 - That is the only thing I know about her.

 - A : Your parents always stayed in Holland, they have never been to Indonesia?

 - P : No, my brother who died, did.

 - He was leading the war over there.

 - A : Have you ever been in Indonesia yourself?

 - P : No, I never had the need to go there.

 - I have a sister who was in India.

 - Once I visited her.

 - It is very interesting, but to live there, is nothing for me.

 - I prefer to say at home.

 - Then you also have to send the children back to Holland for studying and I had to stay there, oh, no, that's nothing for me.

 - You see that the disease which they have as a young girl comes back in the same form at an old age.

 - Maybe this fatal disease comes back, as well with diarrhoea as with the cough, because the resistance came down.

 - Surely, in your practice you will struggle with old people who come for a cough, which develops to a pneumonia, of which they finally die.

 - That is Tuberculinum.

 - In this case I was sure that Sulphur was the right remedy, but it didn't do anything at all.

 - Also Nux vomica didn't do anything at all, only Tuberculinum gave an amelioration.

 - In the Repertory I didn't find Tuberculinum in any of her symptoms, only her story made me think of this remedy.

 - Now she is doing well, but it took a very long time.

 - The ameliorations in Tuberculinum cases need a long time.

CASE9

Tuberculinum bovinum kent

 Woman, 73 years old

Five years ago I lost one of my patients - it was a female patient 76 years old -, because I didn't recognize the remedy. She died in the University hospital. Since then I have been wondering why I didn't find the remedy, because normally old people die peacefully and not because of obstruction of the lungs or things like that.

A few years later I recognized which remedy I should have given and I think, sooner or later you will come into such a situation. Therefore I want to show you that Tuberculinum bovinum Kent is not only a remedy for babies, small children or young people, but it is also very important in old people.

A: You came for treatment here because you had quite a lot of complaints with the joints, especially the joints of the hands and the thumbs. The complaints in the joints of the thumb were especially on the right side. It was clearly more on the right than on the left side, very strange. It was very strong before a thunderstorm, or was it?

P: Yes, the kind of weather we have now, damp and windy.

 A: Especially before a thunderstorm?

 P: Yes.

 A: Were the joints swollen?

P: No, they were not swollen. They were only painful. There were terrible stitches.

A: So with damp weather, with changes of weather, and especially before a thunderstorm or a storm. It was clearly more on the right than on the left side. These were the complaints. It was painful especially in the evening, while sitting still it was worse. The pain was better when you were busy.

P: No, it was worse in the evening, because I was tired, because I worked all day.

A: So it was worse in the evening after working.

 P: Yes.

A: Was it also painful while working?

P: Yes, also. It was a terrible stitching pain.

A: Did you have pain only in the thumbs or in the other fingers as well?

P: No, only in the thumbs. It was such a stitching pain. When I bend them it is very painful.

A: Lately you had a remedy, and this remedy worked spectacularly. This remedy cured you of your complaints. You could say that the very painful complaints, the pain in the thumbs is better.

P: I was even without pain. It has been completely gone.

 Which was the remedy?

Worse with changes of weather, before a thunderstorm and it was on the right side?

 Audience: Rhododendron.

 A : Right, Rhododendron.

But now comes the problem. Some people say that you can treat palliatively with homeopathy, this means that although you don't give the right remedy, it ameliorates - but I call this suppressive. This happens very, very often, because often you only take the local symptoms into consideration. I also didn't always ask for mental symptoms, Rhododendron was a very quick prescription. Miraculously the pain disappeared quickly, but it was only a good prescription for the local pain, not for the patient as a whole. This would have been something else. And why? After some time Rhododendron didn't work anymore and the symptoms returned, together with coughing. What does it mean when the old symptoms return together with a cough? That the choice of the remedy must have been wrong. You can discover this only after three or four years, if the old remedy doesn't act for the same symptoms anymore.

In Homeopathy we can easily suppress if we don't take all the symptoms of a patient into consideration.

You will see another patient whom I cured wonderfully with the wrong remedy. If you choose a remedy only on the basis of local symptoms without taking into account the desires, aversions, the way of being then you will never be sure whether it is the right remedy.

P: Then I fell out of the car and down an escalator. I had pain in the shoulder and then the pain in the hands returned.

A: In the meantime it has been so well that you don't even need the tranquilizers anymore which you had to take before.

 P: No, I don't take anything anymore.

You see, these are all modalities of Rhododendron, but these are also the modalities of Tuberculinum bovinum Kent. Wet weather aggravates, changes of weather aggravate, aggravation before thunderstorm, aggravation during rest, motion ameliorates, these are all Tuberculinum bovinum Kent modalities, but also Rhododendron modalities. And we could also easily mix this up with Rhus toxicodendron. Rhus toxicodendron also has these modalities, it is more left sided, and they like cold milk, like Tuberculinum bovinum Kent.

A: I repeated the remedy a few times in 1984 and then I gave you another remedy once, remedy number one, this was the remedy for the thumbs. Then suddenly you had pain, stitching pain in the nates. It was located in one spot. Here it says: beautiful reaction of the remedy.

This was very interesting. She had stitching pain in the nates, located only in one small spot. Which remedy has this symptom?

 Audience: Kali bichromicum.

A : No. Look in the Repertory on page 1145:

EXTREMITIES, pain, stitching, nates, small spots:

 Calc-p

 small spots : Calc-p.

She reacted wonderfully to this remedy. Besides she liked to travel, this is also a Calcarea phosphorica symptom, aggravation from change of weather and wet weather, desire for bacon and so on.

A: Because you reacted wonderfully I asked you some more and then you said that you could only walk properly at the age of 4 1/2 years. The legs were too flexible. That's what you told me. This is strange.

She was late in learning to walk, this is also a modality of Calcarea phosphorica. In Calcarea phosphorica it is because of the weakness, not because of mental reasons like in Natrum muriaticum.

A: There was also the ointment of the quack with which you rubbed the painful spots.

P: I brought the ointment along. It is made in Hong Kong.

A: Have you been in Hong Kong?

P: Yes, there is a lion on the wrapping. And now you can buy it in Belgium as well.

A: The remedy helped you a lot for the stitching pain in the thigh, and this corresponds with the fact that you learned to walk late. I repeated the remedy. Later on you started coughing. When did it start? I think in April 1988. You had been to Spain.

 P: To Tenerife.

A: Do you travel to Tenerife every year?

P: Yes, in the winter. I like it.

A: You can't bear the winter very well, can you?

 P: No, I can't bear the cold.

A: How often do you travel in a year?

 P: Once.

A: You have been to Hong Kong?

 P: Yes, 12 yeas ago.

A: Where else have you been?

P: In Thailand, in France, Germany, Romania, Holland, Greece.

A: You have been to all these countries?

 P: Yes.

A: Do you like to travel that much?

P: Yes. But now I only go to Tenerife.

A: How old are you at the moment?

 P: 73 years old.

This is strange. A woman from this surrounding, a farmer's woman, who likes to travel so much and so often in the history of world.

A: You have been to Tenerife, came back and then you had a cold?

P: Yes. I even started coughing in Tenerife.

A: Even in the warm climate you started coughing?

P: I didn't dare to take any medicines, because I'm not allowed.

A: Then I asked you something about the diseases in the family. Your father had asthma. You had stitching pain under the left breast and you were coughing and coughing. Tell me what happened.

 Again on the left side.

P: First I had been hospitalized because of the bronchitis and then I had an inflammation of the lungs.

 A: Why?

P: Because the windows were open and I was lying near the door. There was a draft of air. Doctor X was very angry with the nurses. I was in the hospital for seven weeks.

A: On which side did you have the inflammation of the lungs?

 P: On the left side.

Very strange, every time on the left side.

A: Anyway, I gave you a remedy which didn't do anything at all, it was Carbo vegetabilis. In June you were still coughing, and at the same time the pain in the hands returned, aggravated before a thunderstorm, worse from changes of weather.

She was coughing and coughing and I gave her Carbo vegetabilis, because I didn't recognize the remedy. Then I didn't see any connection between the cough and the previous pain in the joints, only when the rheumatic complaints appeared again at the same time with the cough. It was clear that both symptoms indicated the same remedy.

A: What did I have to do? I repeated Rhododendron again, but it didn't help anymore.

Then you came back on August 2 and said that you had a severe cold. There was discharge.

P: I had thick, yellow discharge especially in the morning and the whole day.

A: Because the discharge was thick in the morning and the rheumatic complaints appeared at the same time I gave you Kali bichromicum, but it didn't help anything at all. On August 9 you called me and said, "Doctor; I can't hold it anymore." You were weeping when you arrived, do you remember?

 P: Yes.

A: You were doing very badly and you felt forsaken.

Weeping, weeping, weeping and you had a cold feeling on the back. You said that you wept easily lately. I gave you a remedy, number three, because of the weeping and the yellow discharge.

Afterwards you improved a little bit, in general a little bit better, also the weeping, but the rheumatic complaints remained. You felt very tired and finally you had to go to bed. Tell me something about this. How was it then?

P: Usually I remained in bed. Normally they brought my food, but I didn't want anything to eat. I felt weaker and weaker.

 A: Very tired?

 P: Yes.

 A: You remained in bed?

 P: Yes.

A: And the cough became worse?

 P: Yes.

Because she felt forsaken, was weeping a lot and because of the discharge I gave her Pulsatilla.

A: The last time you were here was on August 27, 5 days ago. Up to that point between August 9 and 27 you continued coughing, with pain and tiredness. The chilliness was gone.

P: And headache. Now it is better again. Yesterday I went after the newspaper the first time. It is not so far, but it was the first time I could do it again.

A: During the consultation I asked you, "Have you been bitten by a dog in the past?"

P: Yes, a very long time ago.

 Why did I ask this?

Because dogs bite only these people who are afraid of them. If somebody goes for a walk and suddenly a dog runs to him and bites him it must be a remedy with fear of dogs. We know that Lyssinum is in this rubric.

Remark: But sometimes the dogs are crazy.

A : Yes, there are dogs with rabies, that's what you mean, but people who have been bitten by rabies dogs ... however, if somebody has been bitten by a dog, it means to me that he has fear of dogs.

A: But you are not afraid of dogs.

P: No. It might have been in 1938 or 1939. I called the bus to stop and the dog was lying in the garden next to the house which I left. The dog had puppies and didn't know what was going on. She ran to me and bit me.

A: You always had a lot of expectoration. Which color was the expectoration?

 P: Now?

 A: No, before.

 P: Before it was yellow.

A: You didn't have pain in the lungs, but you had pain under the left breast.

P: Yes, I had stitches on the left side a few times.

A: Did you drink a lot lately?

P: No, very little, because I lost urine while coughing.

A: That's why you drank little?

 P: Yes.

This often happens in Tuberculinum bovinum Kent. They lose urine while coughing. With this symptom first of all you have to think of Spongia, Causticum, Pulsatilla and so on, but also Tuberculinum bovinum Kent has this symptom.

 A: What did you drink?

P: This homeopathic coffee, sometimes a glass of lemonade. And tea.

 A: Did you drink milk?

P: No, not at that time.

A: Do you like to drink milk in general?

 P: Yes.

A: Does it have to be warm?

P: No, it doesn't have to. But I eat pudding every day.

A: Do you drink milk from the bottle?

 P: Seldom.

A: On August 27 you received a tablet and the next day you had to take another one. So on August 27 you took three times a spoonful...

P: On August 28 again three times a spoonful. The next day I had the other tablet melt under my tongue. This was the big breakthrough, it helped me a lot. It might also be the other tablets, but especially this tablet helped me a great deal.

A: How much did it help you?

P: I suffered less from tiredness. One night I even didn't have to get up, and the other nights I had to get up at least once. Before, I had to get up often at night.

 A: How often?

P: I don't know precisely. Three or four times.

 A: Do you sleep better?

 P: Yes.

A: Did you have to get up to urinate?

P: No, because of the cough. Normally, I drink a lot, but now I have to limit it.

A: On which other level have you improved?

P: I can rest better, although I didn't sleep last night, maybe because of the weather.

A: Did you take a rest during the day yesterday?

 P: Yes.

A: Did the cough also improve?

P: Yes, the cough improved, but it is not gone yet. I'm sorry.

A: The cough cannot possibly be gone. It is only 5 days ago, you feel that the energy is increasing, and the appetite is also better. You almost didn't eat anything. You were also very sad. What about your energy?

 P: It is much better.

A: You look a little bit better also.

 How are the rheumatic pains?

 P: Rather good.

A: Rather good. This is the first time that they are better when the cough is also better. Has something else improved after the last tablet?

P: I can't think of anything else. Oh yes, I have less expectoration. I only had yellow discharge once, otherwise it is white and transparent. The discharge was yellow only once.

A: Good, I think you will become healthy again.

P: I feel it myself, because I was really anxious. I was really afraid that I would have taken my last trip. Do you understand?

A: You have really suffered. But we avoided it this time.

P: That's why I trust you so much.

A: You don't need to trust me.

P: Yes, I do. I have been everywhere with my hands and instead of improving it became worse. I have been very far and everywhere for this problem.

Afterwards I thought that the first remedy was wrong, maybe palliative, but I think rather suppressive.

I don't know anything about the relationship between Calcarea phosphorica and Tuberculinum bovinum Kent. Does anybody have experience with this?

 (No answer)

If you have problems on different levels, diarrhea, lung or rheumatic problems, these three together or only two of them, for example, rheumatic and lung problems, then you have to think of Tuberculinum bovinum Kent.

 Question: Which potency?

 A : 10M, 50M

Question: Aren't you afraid that maybe she is too weak, because she is so old?

A : No, I'm not afraid of that. But I'm afraid of giving the wrong remedy. When I'm sure of the remedy I'm not afraid to give high potencies, except in patients with eczema.

 Remark: ... shaking head ...

A : Involuntary movement of the head, I don't know. Up to now I haven't seen it in Tuberculinum bovinum Kent patients, but maybe it is a symptom of Tuberculinum bovinum Kent, I don't know.

Question: Did you ever see an aggravation after Tuberculinum bovinum Kent? Not one of the patients ever said anything about this?

A : All of them were better without an aggravation. I haven't seen an aggravation yet and most of my Tuberculinum bovinum Kent cases were acute cases, except some so-called "difficult children", children with character problems. You know that the first remedy in nervous, difficult children is Tuberculinum bovinum Kent, and also in these children I have never seen aggravations. Don't forget the nightly waking in these children, by which they cling to persons or objects who come near, just like in Stramonium.

CASE10

 Lung tuberculosis

 Tuberculinum bovinum kent

 Boy, 17 years old

This is a boy with early lung tuberculosis.

A: On the X-ray you can see a few spots. They are rather round and precisely marked. You can also see the lymph nodes...

 Tell me the story.

D: (Doctor who treats the boy in the Center) Now he is 17 years old. He hasn't been ill often, he had an ear inflammation as a child, no other childhood diseases. He bore the vaccinations very well. With Pentecost he went to England and there he had diarrhea with pain, and also fever. The fever didn't go down. After three days he had to take antibiotics. Then the fever went away, but since then he feels very tired and weak. Normally he is very tired in the morning, this lasts for a while and in the evening his energy is high. But now he is weak all day long. He has fever and a short cough. His mother says, "As if something is stuck."

Rather high in the left lung he has stitching pain on inspiring and on coughing.

You see, again it is on the left side, stitching pain on the left side.

D: He likes to travel a lot. He perspires at night, at the moment much more than before. He is easily warm and he can't bear the warmth in the car. He suffered from this often in the past and this symptom is increasing now. During auscultation you can hear crackles heard close to the ear and somewhat wheezing, a slight obstructive noise in the upper and in the middle zone of the lung, when he inspires deeply, otherwise you don't hear anything. He desires fresh air, feels better outside. He is much paler than before. Otherwise there are no other peculiarities. He likes salt a lot, highly seasoned food, pasta and milk. As a child he liked fat a lot. In fact he doesn't eat it anymore. Now he doesn't desire it at all. He likes cheese a lot, smoked meat, smoked horse meat, sausages, very clearly salty smoked meat and milk. He is very thirsty and he still is. In fact there are no anxieties, he has a little fear of heights, it must be rather high, he can climb on a ladder or a roof. He is quiet and he makes contact with other people very easily. When he is sad he stays by himself, he doesn't want to be consoled. He has many friends. When he has been hurt or offended he doesn't forget about it. As a child he had an allergy and he had a course of desensitization. He was here once before for eczema on the feet. Then he received Natrum muriaticum and the eczema on the feet improved very well.

This is a case which I supervised. First the doctor who treats this patient introduced this case and now the patient himself enters the consultation room.

A: Does he have lymph nodes?

D: Yes, in the neck he has small lymph nodes, not very large.

 A: Also under the armpits?

D: In the armpits he has big lymph nodes.

Normally you also find inguinal lymph nodes.

 A: And in the groin?

D: Yes, the whole inguinal region is full of lymph nodes.

 These are all Hodgkin's symptoms.

D: He has a tickling cough, a short hacking cough.

A: When does he cough most?

P: The whole day. I don't cough at night, only during the day.

D: The cough is really superficial. He doesn't have expectoration, nothing comes out.

A: What about the perspiration? Did you perspire last night? How did you feel this morning when you woke up?

P: This morning I felt well, not really fit, but good.

A: You said that you felt weak in the morning, but today ...

P: No, not today, today I felt good, but I perspired last night.

A: He still takes antibiotics. He is rather emaciated and tall, he always has been this way. As a child he had an ear inflammation and an allergy and he had a course of desensitization one year ago.

Is he afraid of animals? Of dogs?

P: We have a dog at home. No, no problems.

A: He doesn't have any other symptoms. He has been coughing for 4, 5 days. In the past when he was coughing he took antibiotics and then the cough diminished. Now, he is coughing again, but it is not the same cough as before. Also this time he started taking antibiotics. We want to stop the antibiotics and give the remedy in 10M or 50M.

The cough should disappear after 10 days. First it should become loose and then it should go away.

Here you have all the Tuberculinum bovinum Kent elements: left-sided, perspiration at night, desire for milk and the enlarged lymph glands. There is no doubt about the remedy.

 FEEDBACK

A: You received the remedy one month ago. You had it only once. How quickly did you react?

P: I took the remedy on Thursday, on Saturday the pain was gone and on Monday the cough went away.

 A: And the fever?

 P: I didn't have fever anymore.

 A: And the perspiration?

P: It is completely gone. Since then I feel fine.

A: No problem with your father?

 P: No.

A: Four weeks later the doctor had another X-ray taken. Here is the first X-ray so that we can compare. This X-ray was taken two months later.

Already after 14 days you can see that the thickness has diminished. You can still see the lymph glands. There is still some shadow to be seen, but it is essentially less thick, although it has been taken with the same intensity. You can only see it if you look very closely.

I would like to show that the calcifications after tuberculosis disappear with homeopathic treatment, but never with allopathic treatment. This is the difference between a suppressive treatment and a really curative treatment, with a suppression the calcifications remain your whole life, while they disappear with a really curative treatment.

Up to now it has improved a lot in this patient, but it hasn't disappeared completely yet.

A: This time he came because he has had pain in the stomach for three weeks with constant nausea. But because he was still doing fine, I gave him Foliata squalosa. I didn't want to repeat. Only when this lasted and when he was doing badly, when he started to perspire I repeated the remedy and the next day the nausea and also the perspiration were gone.

Question: Do you have experience with homeopathic treatment after allopathic treatment?

A: This patient has been treated allopathically first and I stopped the antibiotics immediately when he came to me and I gave him the homeopathic remedy. Only if somebody has taken allopathic medicines, for example, like Cortisone for quite a long time it might cause problems.

Question: Have you ever seen that kidney stones or calcifications have been dissolved after homeopathic treatment?

A : Yes, that is no problem. Maybe when it is a big stone, but the little ones are urinated out.

Question: I mean whether they disappear.

A : Yes, yes, they disappear with the right remedy. With a big stone maybe you have to wait 5 or 6 years, but the little ones disappear immediately. The stones are caused by the production of the urine and in gallstones by the production of the bile. They will go away with the right remedy.

Question: I also want to know whether tubercular calcifications disappear?

A : Yes, yes, they also disappear.

CASE11

Dd sulph., tub.

Woman, 35 years old

 February 24, 1988

A: Your main problem is backache, isn't it?

 P: Yes.

A: Where do you have pain?

 P: Low in the back.

A: At the height of the belt or lower?

 P: Just below.

A: How long have you had this pain?

 P: Already for 4 or 5 years.

A: Did you have such complaints in the past?

P: No, not that I know of.

A: When do you suffer most?

P: Especially when it is cold.

A: With cold weather or when it is cold inside?

P: When I'm freezing. And after a lot of exertion.

A: After a lot of exertion, what do you mean?

p: For example after a big job or after a walk.

 A: What happens from standing?

P: I even have problems while standing. Standing doesn't do me any good. I can't stand longer than 20 minutes.

A: Now and then you need a support?

P: Yes, or going to and fro. I have to. I can't lie on the back.

Which is the first symptom we can use?

I know her mother-in-law. She is an old woman and when I cure somebody in her family I get one of her old books. In these old books you find all the information which Hahnemann had. Here you find all the possible indications for Sulphuricum acidum, Nitricum acidum and all these remedies which already existed long before Homeopathy.

Anyhow, I had to cure this patient because her mother-in-law always complained that her daughter-in-law couldn't run or walk properly.

I already treated her husband because he had constant sneezing, sneezing from cold, perspiring feet, stinky perspiring feet and his mother told me that as a child he always fainted from pain, when he was hit somewhere. He is a chilly man.

 Which is his remedy?

 Hepar sulphuris.

Then her son came with cracks in the fingers and the feet. He was in treatment in the Center and he had already received all possible remedies, Sarsaparilla and so on, until he came to me. Without any mental symptom indicating Hepar I gave him Hepar. I have this case on video and when I show you the video nobody would ever think of Hepar. Also I couldn't have found it if I hadn't known his father and some physical symptoms which indicated the remedy. He was cured with Hepar.

This is his mother for whom I try to find the right remedy.

Which is the first rubric we can take?

 Look on page 898:

standing, while : Agar., agn., asar., berb., bry., calc., cann-i., caps., cocc., coff., con., hep., ign., Ind., kali-bi., kali-c., kali-p., kali-s., lil-t., lith., lyc., meny., merc., mur-ac., nit-ac., petr., ph-ac., phos., plan., plb., podo., puls., rumx., ruta., sep., spong., Sulph., thuj., tus-p., Valer., verat., zinc.

 BACK, pain, standing while

 A: What about local warmth?

P: I already tried a hot water bottle.

Look very closely. It is already the third time she does something with her tongue. What do you see?

Audience: She is licking her lips.

A : Yes, that's what she does all the time. Where do you find this in the Repertory?

 Look on page 407:

to and fro : Cupr., hyos., lach., sulph.

MOUTH, motion, lapping, to and fro: Cupr, hyos,

 lach, sulph

And what kind of impression do you get from this woman? What can you say about her hair?

It is not very correct, although she is rather rich. Her father is a dentist, one of her sisters works in a hospital in Switzerland and the others somewhere in Belgium. They work until they earn enough money and then they travel to India. Now they are on a trip with the rucksack on the back. When they have spent all the money they come back and work 1 1/2 or 2 years until they earn enough money to travel again to India.

I know there was tuberculosis in the family; her mother had tuberculosis.

How can you use the symptom of her hair as a mental symptom?

It seems that she doesn't care about her hair, she is rather indifferent about her personal appearance. There are not so many remedies in this rubric.

A: What kind of pain is it, how does the pain feel?

 P: Like needles.

A: Are you easily warm or how is your temperature?

 P: I'm rather frozen.

 A: What do you mean?

P: When the others are taking off their pull-over I keep mine on for quite a long time.

She says that she is rather chilly. Be careful when it comes to this theme. For example, a Pulsatilla patient may say that she tolerates the sun well, that she likes to lie on the beach. "Oh, can you lie on the beach?" "Yes, I enjoy lying on the beach." "And for how long?" "All day long."

All day long? And this must be a Pulsatilla?

"And how often do you go into the water?" "Every quarter of an hour."

Be careful, also with Natrum muriaticum. For example, they can say that at home they can lie in the sun the whole afternoon, but they have a hose so that they can squirt themselves with cold water.

Up to now I never - "never" does not exist in Homeopathy, you know that - but up to now I haven't seen a Natrum muriaticum who can tolerate the sun well, neither a Pulsatilla, but there are always exceptions to the rule.

 P: I don't say it has to be 23° C ( 73f ) in the house, then I get a headache.

A: Then you get a headache?

P: Yes, whenever it is too warm, when the air is too warm, there is not enough air-conditioning, then I get a headache.

 A: You need fresh air?

 P: Yes.

A: Are there other situations in which you get a headache?

P: Yes, also in the car, when there is too little oxygen.

A: When you drive the car?

 P: Yes.

A: Could it be that it is too warm in the car?

P: Yes. When it is too warm I easily get a headache. I rather easily have cold hands.

A: Cold hands during a headache?

P: No, I may be warm all over, and yet I might have cold hands.

A: May I see your fingernails?

They are normal. Do you bite them?

 P: No.

What can you observe about the fingernails of Sulphur?

 Audience: They are dirty.

A : Yes, they are dirty, there are black stripes under the nails. You should also have a look at the feet ...

A: Are there other situations in which you get a headache?

P: No, not that I know of.

At the moment I have a headache.

A: Yes, it is too warm in here. Do you have a headache at night?

 P: No.

A: How is it in the morning?

P: Now and then I have a headache.

 A: When exactly?

P: When I wake up or when I have to get up.

A: At what time do you get up?

P: At a quarter past seven.

A: Do you get up at a quarter past seven every day?

 P: Yes, about this time.

When I don't have to get up...

A: What about the headache then?

P: I get up later, but not, when I go to bed at the regular time.

A: And when you don't go to bed at a regular time?

 P: It might happen that I don't wake up before 9:00 o'clock.

A: What happens when you stay in bed until noon?

P: I never sleep until noon.

 A: Why?

P: I think it is because of my internal clock that I wake up.

A: And when you don't wake up?

P: Then I have pain in the back and I get up and think that everything is bad again.

A: So pain in the back. Are you irritable then?

P: Yes, it's not good for the mood when I stay in bed too long. Then the day has passed when I get up and I haven't done anything. I don't like that.

Which symptom am I trying to get out?

The headache during weekends. When they sleep too long they have the typical Sulphur headache during the weekend or on a holiday. When they used to get up at 6:00 a.m.  and when they sleep until 9:00 a.m.  they have a headache. This is caused by sleeping too long.

 Do you know the rubric?

 Look on page 1402:

 GENERALITIES, sleep, long, agg.

long agg. : Ambr., anac., arn., ars., asaf., bell., bor., bry., calc., camph., carb-v., caust., cham., cocc., con., dig., euphr., ferr., graph., hep., hyos., ign., kali-c., kreos., Lach., lyc., mag-c., nux-v., ph-ac., puls., rhus-t., spig., stram., Sulph., verat.

This is the reason for the weekend headache of Sulphur.

A: Are there situations in which you are anxious?

P: Yes, when I wait for somebody and he doesn't show up.

A: Do you have fear of heights?

P: Not when I can support myself. But I can't look downwards while standing on a high mountain, I don't feel 100% sure.

A: What do you feel then? Do your knees become weak?

 P: Yes, something like that.

A: Do you become dizzy afterwards?

P: Yes, I become dizzy on stooping for a while and when I have to get up again.

 A: Just from stooping?

P: Yes, but then I was stooping so often. Then it went away.

A: How was it? Was it while getting up from stooping or just while stooping?

P: Yes. Now I have more complaints in this matter.

She doesn't answer my question correctly, she is just talking. It is very difficult, but I know her behavior and therefore I know which remedy she needs. Now I try to show it, but it is very difficult.

A: On which side do you sleep?

 P: It is the same.

A: On the left or the right side?

 P: Yes.

 A: Never on the abdomen?

 P: No, never.

 A: And on the back?

P: I think that I lie on my back while sleeping. But then usually I wake up because of pain in my back.

A: Then you wake up from pain?

 P: Yes.

 A: Do you often dream?

 P: Yes.

 A: What kind of dreams?

P: I can't say. I don't know what I dream of. I dream, but of nothing in particular. These are more or less vague dreams.

A: Do you wake up from a dream sometimes?

P: Yes, it can happen, but not so often.

 A: Are these nightmares?

 P: No, in fact not.

 A: What about your appetite?

 P: It is very good.

A: What do you like to eat and what is a real aversion?

P: I like to eat everything. Especially a lot of sweets, but in fact I like to eat everything.

A: But you are very much attracted to sweets?

 P: Yes.

A: How does the food have to be prepared, highly seasoned, or rather less?

P: I prefer it rather highly seasoned. It has to be spicy.

A: How spicy does it have to be?

P: Not so spicy that I have to extinguish it afterwards with water, but I like it rather highly seasoned. I like to taste what I eat, don't you?

A: What about fat? Do you like the rim of fat on the meat?

 P: I don't prefer it.

A: Are there restaurants where you prefer not to eat?

P: I can't say, because I hardly eat in restaurants. I'm not so fastidious, but I can appreciate something good.

Which symptom am I trying to get out now?

 Disgust.

A: Do you often drink out of the glass of somebody else?

 P: I hardly do.

A: Can you tolerate this well?

P: No, it is not so strong.

 A: Are you easily disgusted?

P: No, in fact I'm not.

A: Do you think that you can smell well what you eat?

P: Yes, I smell it very strongly.

A: So your smell is very good?

 P: Yes.

A: You have a very good sense of smell. Do you smell when something is rotten?

 P: Yes.

A: Do you throw it immediately away when something doesn't smell fresh?

P: It depends whether I think something is really bad. I smell immediately when something is rotten or not.

A: What about your stomach? Do you have complaints with your stomach when you eat something?

 P: No.

A: Are you cold in bed?

P: Yes, in the beginning I'm cold, but after a while, when I can cuddle up against my husband I become warm.

A: But you are never too warm?

P: Yes, sometimes I am terribly warm.

A: Do you have to uncover yourself?

P: No. Sometimes it is so bad that I wake up from the warmth, that I'm really wet, from head to feet, soaking wet.

A: Do you often perspire at night?

P: No, not so often. Before it was less. Lately I have to sleep with the windows open. When the windows are closed I can't sleep properly at all. Then I get up and look to see if the windows are open.

A: Do you have itching of the skin sometimes?

P: Yes, the whole day. I have constant itching somewhere. And once I start scratching I can't stop.

 A: Without a skin eruption?

P: Yes, it might start somewhere and then it goes on. Sometimes I have an eruption here in the neckline, so little white points. When I start scratching I can't stop at all and then it starts burning. I have complaints especially when I wear something synthetic, for example, a shirt which is not completely made out of cotton. When I wear shirts made out of cotton I don't have it.

A: Which materials don't you tolerate?

P: Synthetic. When I wear a synthetic shirt my skin itches. I put a little ointment on it and after a few days it goes away. I may not touch it, otherwise it becomes worse. When I wear something made out of pure cotton I don't have it.

 A: What about wool?

P: I don't tolerate it. I never wore it on the bare skin, it is not an agreeable feeling.

Itching from wool, everybody knows the rubric.

 Look on page 1329:

SKIN, itching, wool agg.: Hep, phos, psor, puls, Sulphur

If somebody tells you this spontaneously it must be one of these remedies.

A: Did you have eczema in the past?

 P: No.

A: Can you tell me something about your character? I mean what is remarkable in your character?

P: Sensitivity, I think. Yes, I'm easily worried about everything. I have fear that somebody else is deficient. I also react too quickly instead of thinking first. Sometimes I think it would be better to think first before saying something.

A: Do you easily give up your ideas?

P: Yes, I'm rather easily influenced.

A: Or are you a person who perseveres in his ideas?

 P: Yes, I have a certain pride.

A: Are there other remarkable things?

P: Maybe I'm too easily excited. A little bit hot-tempered, impulsive.

A: Is there something else which is characteristic for you?

 P: No, in fact not.

 A: Nothing in particular?

 P: No.

A: Are you a thirsty person?

 P: No.

 A: You drink little?

 P: Yes.

 A: OK. This is clear.

In these cases you must prescribe Sulphur on the appearance and on something particular which I can't explain.

They can turn you around their finger and give a completely different picture of what they really are.

 FEEDBACK (April 11, 1988)

(after remedy on Feb24 1988)

A: You were here on February 24. This is 1 1/2 months ago, what did you feel after the remedy?

 P: Nothing.

 A: You didn't have a headache?

P: No, nothing in particular. I paid attention to it, but I didn't notice anything in particular.

A: So there was no aggravation?

You had pain in the back from a burden, from a long walk, while lying on the back and with cold. How is the pain in the back at the moment?

P: Lately I do quite a lot of exertion and the pain in the back has certainly not aggravated at all. It isn't gone yet, but ...

A: So the pain in the back didn't aggravate although you have done a lot of exertion. If you would have done this kind of exertion in the past you would have certainly had more pain?

P: Yes, now I can do a lot more things.

Listen very carefully. You will hear a clear amelioration. These patients will never admit that they are better, you know this.

P: I also detected that the stool improved.

A: The stool is also better.

P: Yes, probably because I do a lot more exercise and a lot of walking.

These are all theories; the stool is better because she does more exercise.

A: But before you also did a lot of walking?

P: Yes, but since Christmas I participate regularly in orientation running. I don't run uninterrupted, in between I run, then I walk, but every week I'm on the run for 8 or 9 kilometers.

A: Is the stool better since Christmas or since when?

P: When I was here on the 24th I didn't have the strong pain which I had before. I still feel it, but I can tolerate it.

A: Do you think that you tolerate physical exertion better since you have been here?

P: Yes, I run regularly. Before I never did this regularly, but now I run every week.

A: Before you were rather constipated.

P: This is not the case anymore; I notice that the stool has become softer.

Before she went with my wife to gymnastics every week and my wife always told me that she had a lot of difficulty and now she runs 8 to 9 kilometers every week.

P: I can't run a very long time, but I can do it to some extent.

A: Before you took the remedy did you suffer a lot with your back, could you move? Did you still suffer from your back sometimes?

P: Yes, I had pain, especially at night, but not as intense as before. No, I didn't really wake up at night from pain, no it was never so bad.

Before she said that she couldn't stay in bed from pain in the back.

A: What about the sensitivity to coldness?

P: It is terribly hot in here. I could take off all my clothes, it is so warm in here.

A: But before you said that you are easily cold, that you easily freeze?

P: Yes, I'm not so sensitive anymore. Yesterday it was not really cold, it was rather chilly, but I could tolerate it well. But here, I don't feel so well here.

A: Besides you were complaining about a headache when it was too warm.

P: I had a headache two or three times since I've been here. I turned off the central heating and I don't let it come that far.

A: Are you still dizzy on stooping or while getting up?

P: Yes, I still had this. I think it has something to do with my blood pressure. In the summer I was often dizzy and then my mother-in-law said that I should have my blood pressure taken and it was too low.

 A: How is it lately?

P: Between 120 and 130. But the complaints which I had during the summer didn't come back.

A: At that time you also told me that you had itching of the skin?

 P: Yes, I still have.

A: Did you have more eruptions of the skin eventually?

P: At the moment I have these little points all over, you can hardly see them, but I feel them.

A: How do you feel in general?

P: Tired. For a while I have felt really tired.

A: Nevertheless you run a few kilometers during the week?

P: Yes, to be in the air outside is a real relaxation for me. I walk at least 5 or 6 kilometers a week.

A: But afterwards you are not so extremely tired?

P: Yes, I notice that I'm not in condition, but ...

A: Apparently your sleep has improved, hasn't it? You don't wake up so frequently anymore?

P: Yes, that's right, it is really true.

It is a very important, deep amelioration when the stool and the sleep ameliorate. She doesn't accept this amelioration, also Lycopodium clavatum often doesn't do this. In these cases you have to give Sac-lac and wait and after some time all the other complaints will improve.

 A: You don't drink coffee?

P: No, I drank only two cups of coffee.

 A: Do you take peppermint?

 P: No.

A: Do you have other particular complaints?

P: Yes, my vision is very bad. I also have an eruption of the skin.

A: Homeopathically this skin eruption is a good reaction. I like this kind of reaction.

P: Somebody else has this also, I'm not the only person who suffers from this.

Her husband also had an eruption. He got Hepar.

A: But it is an excretion.

Tell me, you had a headache while driving the car?

P: In fact I don't have it anymore. It is less, but I switch off the heat whenever it is possible.

This was in April 1988. I gave her Sulphur10M and then I didn't have to repeat the remedy anymore. Later she had a discharge from the right ear.

 FEEDBACK (September 9, 1989)

A: After your earlier complaints you had a discharge from the right ear. This was the main complaint. You also had pain in the region of the right mastoid. This chronic middle ear inflammation lasted for 4 months in June. It started in February.

On June 4, I repeated your constitutional remedy, but it didn't change anything with the ear. On July 26 you got another remedy. Tell me what the reaction was.

P: First the discharge went on, there was discharge from the ear until August 5, so 11 days. On August 6 or 7 the ear started bleeding. I thought, "What is wrong?" and then gradually the bleeding stopped, and then everything stopped. This was the end of the story as you can say. And now I'm saved.

A: Now you are saved, in fact that's all I wanted to know. This shows that your so-called constitutional remedy on which your other complaints improved a lot didn't help you anymore.

That's what I want to show you. You give Sulphur, the pain in the back is better and then, at the beginning of 1989 the right ear starts running, with pain in the mastoid. I repeat Sulphur, no reaction. This is the point where I have to make a decision.

A: How are you doing otherwise?

P: I feel good, now and then a little bit stiff and some pain.

A: Do you have this when you run a lot?

 P: Yes, exactly.

With this case I want to show you that we have to be flexible and to do the next step, to give the next remedy at the right moment.

If you don't give the right remedy, Tuberculinum bovinum Kent, in a case of chronic ear discharge you have to send the patient to the throat-nose-ear doctor. He gives antibiotics and maybe also Cortisone and then you can't really cure the patient profoundly. The development may go the other way around, somebody who was cured by Tuberculinum bovinum Kent will need Sulphur later on.

Tuberculinum bovinum Kent as a complementary remedy is often indicated to cure the patient profoundly.

Question: The symptoms for Tuberculinum bovinum Kent were only these ...

A : The symptoms for Tuberculinum bovinum Kent were the chronicity of the discharge, the tuberculosis in the family and the fact that after Sulphur she didn't develop any symptoms for another so-called normal homeopathic remedy. Patients with a strong psoric remedy like Sulphur, Calcarea or Lycopodium clavatum do not easily develop to another classical homeopathic remedy, but rather to a nosode. I don't like to use the word nosode, because every homeopathic remedy has its own picture, but do you understand what I mean?

Question: Couldn't this be Kali sulphuricum or something like that?

A: If it would have been Kali sulphuricum I would have expected more Kali sulphuricum symptoms, more mental Kali sulphuricum symptoms, like Pulsatilla symptoms. But if there was a case of tuberculosis in the family some time you must give the patient Tuberculinum bovinum Kent if you treat him long enough.

 P A U S E

During the break somebody made a very good remark, namely in the USA "delicacies" means "delicate food", and he explains this as being very expensive food.

 Remark: Very good food.

A : What is good is subjective, but what we know of the rubric when we look at the rubric ... -

Who can tell me the most important mental symptom, the essence of China?

 Audience: Haughtiness.

A : Yes, that's right. And you see China is capital in the rubric "desire delicacies". It must be very good food, but what does this mean in China?

Audience: China wants only special things.

A : Very special things like what?

Audience: Very good and very high in value.

A : Very high valued and expensive things. China will never buy something cheap, but only the most expensive, the best there is. In this rubric there is also Aurum metallicum. Aurum metallicum likes very delicate things. Very important things are always expressed by black and gold, black and gold are the qualities with the highest value. Therefore usually Aurum metallicum writes with a black pen with gold borders. They also like to stay in a 5 star hotel, everything has to be very pretty, they only eat with real cutlery, not with plastic cutlery, they prefer gold cutlery, silver cutlery is also all right. Anyhow it must be very valuable cutlery.

As you can see China and Aurum metallicum are delicate in the sense that everything has to be of a very high quality. In Calcarea this delicacy has another meaning. Calcarea likes the eggs only soft boiled, and only in a very particular way, not too soft and not too hard, it must be right. It is the same in Tuberculinum bovinum Kent. They don't like this kind of meat or that kind of meat, but only sausages and hamburgers.

Both interpretations fit the rubric, that everything has to be of a very high standard of quality as well as the fact that the food has to be prepared the way they want.

CASE12

Dd borx., sep., tub.

 Girl, 5 months old

 DECEMBER 4, 1989

The mother came because she couldn't become pregnant. She is a nurse and you will see which remedy she received.

Now she comes with her second child, which had an icterus neonatorum(yellowish discoloration of the skin)  immediately after birth and now she suffers from anxiety, sleeplessness and digestive disorder.

A: (to the mother) You were in treatment for sterility problems in 1987. You are a nurse. At that time you were rather pale. Because of your wish for children you had been everywhere and you tried everything.

MP: Everything which was possible in classical medicine.

A: For us it was easy, because the remedy was clear. You have a particular appearance (has dark hair, dark eyes, dark tint), and you theorize in the sense that you try to find an explanation for everything. In the evening you felt good, in the morning not refreshed, and did not have a great sexual desire. You slept on the abdomen, had pain in the back after standing a long time. You couldn't tolerate tight clothes, had headaches, especially after shopping and some liver spots.

You know this typical symptom, don't you?

 "Headache after shopping".

A: Now you trust me a lot, but at the beginning you reacted rather sharply.

Then I gave you a homeopathic remedy.

Being a nurse is a profession which you often see in Sepia officinalis women.

At the beginning it is very difficult to have good contact with them. You have to prove that you can cure them and when you succeed they won't let you go anymore. They call you for every single problem.

A: When did you become pregnant?

MP: 7 months after I started the treatment.

A: Is this your second child in the meantime?

MP: Yes. Now I don't necessarily want more children.

A: Everything turned out very well. The last time you needed a remedy, it was on April 12 of this year.

MP: Yes, when I was pregnant with this child.

A: Then you had early contractions. Do you remember?

MP: Did you give me the remedy or did your colleague give me the remedy?

A: I gave you the remedy. You called me and told me a very particular symptom.

MP: I had pain in the abdomen, but no pain in the back, and I couldn't tolerate them. The child was very restless.

A: You woke up because this child was kicking so much.

MP: Yes, it was very unpleasant.

A: Indeed this was the symptom. You felt the movements of the child in your abdomen.

MP: Yes, but it was very unpleasant.

A: And you woke up from that.

MP: Yes. Immediately after the remedy it was better.

It was a very strange symptom and I believe in particular symptoms when they are in the Repertory. When she called me she said, "That child in my abdomen disturbs me a lot! It is jerking and kicking so that I wake up from it. I can't sleep because of the movement of this child." Which is the rubric?

 Look on page 554

MOVEMENTS of the fœtus cause nausea and vomiting : Arn.

disturb sleep : Con.

ABDOMEN, movements of the foetus, disturb sleep:

 Con.

 There is only one remedy.

 Remark: And Thuja!

 And also Medorrhinum (Ananda Zaren)

A : Thuja and Medorrhinum are additions here. So I gave her Conium maculatum and immediately afterwards everything was better.

A: The second  child is now 5 months old. Are you still breast feeding?

 MP: Yes.

A: This child had an icterus neonatorum. It was very yellow.

MP: Enormously. There is incompatibility of the blood groups. She is the second child and this is always worse. The bilirubin increased to 15 mg % within one day. This is high.

The incompatibility of the blood group was the cause for the icterus, but this is not interesting for us, it is only an explanation.

Do you know the rubric for icterus neonatorum?

 Look on page 1307:

new born children : Acon., bov., chin., nat-s., sep.

SKIN, discoloration, yellow, jaundice, newborn children

Ananda Zaren has a lot of additions for this rubric.

Chelidonium, Nux vomica (underlined), Lycopodium clavatum (underlined), Sulphur(underlined), Phosphorus, Lachesis, Alumina (underlined), Arsenicum, Calcarea carbonica (underlined), Bryonia alba, Kali iodatum, Mercurius (underlined), Nitricum acidum, Aesculus, Selenium, Zincum, China, Chionanthus, Leptandra, Myrica sebifera, Chamomilla, Magnesium muriaticum, Carduus marianus, Dolichos, Podophyllum peltatum, Ptelea, Conium maculatum, hippozaeninum, Jodum, Laurocerasus and Medorrhinum.

A: Have you been in the hospital?

MP: Yes. Although she received plasma proteins before she had icterus with all the consequences. Within a few days she lost 1/2 kilo, she was very weak and tired.

A: Then somebody gave you a remedy?

MP: Yes, she received a remedy.

A: A colleague gave her Aconitum. Then you called me because it didn't improve.

MP: Yes. Her movements were uncoordinated, so awkward and she was completely cold. According to me it was not normal. She reacted like a child who has too little calcium.

A: Was it better the day after she received the remedy?

MP: No. First, you gave her another remedy and later you called and said that she needed another remedy. She reacted enormously well to the second remedy.

A colleague from the Center first gave Aconitum, because the cause for the icterus neonatorum in newborn children is often fright during birth, but it didn't help. The next remedy I gave her was China, because often I have good results with it, but it didn't help either.

What other remedy could I give?

Because I knew the mother and I knew that Sepia officinalis was the right remedy for her, I tried Sepia officinalis in her child. One day later there was a clear amelioration, the child was healthy again.

But now she comes for other problems.

A: How is she doing now?

MP: I think this is a completely different child than the other one. She is enormously sensitive, she doesn't tolerate any noise.

A: Is this an actual problem?

MP: I think so. For example, I just can't switch on the radio, then she doesn't want to eat or she becomes restless, when I give her porridge (pap). She has a lot of rumbling in her abdomen. One hour before stool she starts moaning and becomes unbearable. Then she weeps a little bit. When she can have flatulence it is better. In the morning she does well, in the afternoon she becomes unbearable. She doesn't know what she wants. She doesn't want to sleep, or eat,  she doesn't want her dummy (pacifier) nor the breast.

 A: Especially in the afternoon?

P: Yes. She especially doesn't tolerate noise. When I feed her the television can not be switched on and I can not talk. Then she releases the breast immediately. She doesn't want to eat anymore.

 A: Does she startle?

MP: She just doesn't want to go on nursing anymore.

A: How does she react the moment she hears noise?

 MP: She startles enormously.

The first problem is that the child is very irritable and starts weeping very quickly. When she is feeding her and she is talking meanwhile or a door opens the child starts weeping immediately.

The first symptom is startling from noises, but many remedies have this.

 A: Does this occur regularly?

 MP: Yes.

 A: Since when is this?

MP: The last few weeks, but it is very remarkable at the moment.

She gasps air or there is something wrong. She has to eructate. It takes quite a long time, because they are very small burps. When I try to feed her again she drinks only very little and then she stops again.

A: Is her abdomen distended after eating?

MP: She doesn't have much elasticity. She has a very rigid structure, like a block. There is not so much to feel.

A: Since when does she have this problem?

 MP: Since Thursday.

A: (the child is chewing on a biting ring) Does she bite regularly?

 MP: Yes, a lot.

A: Probably this has something to do with dentition.

 MP: Yes, I think so.

A: The problem only started on Thursday.

MP: Yes. She doesn't want to lie on her abdomen either, when she has problem with the digestion.

She is biting and drooling for quite a long time.

A: So biting, drooling (salivating), some colic.

 Does she have diarrhea?

MP: No. Yesterday her stool was thinner than usual, but not really diarrhea.

 A: Does she weep easily?

MP: No. She moans a little bit and then she stops immediately.

 A: When?

 MP: After eating.

A: She doesn't weep when you do something in particular with her?

MP: She woke up four nights in a row and when I give her something to eat and I put her on her abdomen she doesn't like it. When I hold her upright it is all right, then she sleeps.

A: When you hold her upright, she falls asleep?

 MP: Then she is fine.

A: Do you have to put her on her abdomen?

MP: Then I feel more sure myself.

 A: That is your feeling?

MP: Yes. When I put her on her abdomen she wakes up immediately, immediately she opens her eyes wide.

A: So you hold the child, then she falls asleep and at the moment you want to put her down she startles?

MP: Yes. I never saw this with the first child. She has also cold wet feet.

A: It has to improve this week. Call me on Friday. I would like to record the result on video.

MP: You can't do what you want with this child. It was a lot easier with her sister.

 What is the rubric?

 Audience: Anxiety, from downward motion.

A: Yes, look on page 7:

 downward : Bor., gels.

 MIND, anxiety, motion, downward

The moment she puts the child down she starts weeping. As long as she holds the child upright there are no difficulties. It is not a problem of putting her on the abdomen or on the back, the problem is the downward motion.

There is another rubric on page 82:

MIND, starting, anxious, downward motion from

Remark: She also said that she had it from noises.

A: Yes, also. The combination of both symptoms is important. In starting from noise one remedy is very important and this together with the anxiety from downward motion, there is only one remedy.

noise, from : Aloe., alum., ant-c., apis., ars., aur., bar-c., Bor., bufo., calad., calc., camph., cann-s., carb-v., caust., chel., cic., cocc., con., cub., hipp., hura., kali-ar., Kali-c., kali-i., kali-p., lach., lyc., lyss., mag-c., med., merc., mosch., nat-a., Nat-c., Nat-m., Nat-p., Nat-s., nit-ac., Nux-v.,op., ox-ac., ptel., rhus-t., sabad., sabin., Sil., spong., sulph., tab.

 Audience: Borax veneta.

A : Yes, Borax veneta. Digestive disorders in dentition and so on. The best description of the picture of the remedy you find in Boericke. When you read Boericke you will find all the symptoms she has told us.

 Question: Which potency?

A : 200, but this is not so important.

Typical for Borax veneta is the tangled hair tips you can also see in Tuberculinum bovinum Kent and Vinca minor.

 FEEDBACK (December 7, 1989)

 A: How did it go?

MP: Very well. On Tuesday it was already a lot better and on Wednesday it was very good.

 A: What about the startling?

MP: She doesn't do it anymore. She doesn't startle anymore when I come into her room. She falls asleep very well. It's very nice to see how deeply and peacefully she sleeps. She also has nice warm hands. Before they were cold.

A: She also wept a lot.

MP: This is over. Now she has become a very easy child. She is not so moody anymore. When she is tired you notice it. She just wants to sleep then. I put her down and she just falls asleep peacefully. Before it was always a problem.

A: Further she doesn't have any complaints?

MP: No, everything is all right. I don't understand how a child can change in its totality from one day to the other. I don't understand. I didn't make any effort to understand.

A: You don't have to worry about that, you can't understand this rationally. If you find the right remedy a lot can change.

MP: Surely, but what do you do? Do you restore the balance in the organism with one tablet?

A: We don't know ourselves exactly.

 MP: I don't believe you.

A: Of course you can give a remedy which fits for particular symptoms. But what the remedy does exactly in the organism, how it works, we don't know.

MP: But it does something. You cannot compare it with a normal medicine. It works totally different.

A: Of course. It works on the energetic level. But we don't need to ask more questions when the remedy works.

MP: Yes, I learned it from you.

This was the reaction to Borax veneta.

A few months later she started coughing. You see this on the next video.

 FEEDBACK (June 1990)

MP: She is coughing. For 5 or 6 weeks I have been seeing a lot of doctors. The last time she was here she received a remedy from you.

A: I repeated Sepia officinalis because after birth she also needed Sepia officinalis.

MP: Now she has a cold all the time, and is coughing. She is coughing a lot, also at night. She starts crying and she cries very loudly. I have to shake her awake and when she wakens she stops crying. In fact she wakes up from coughing. It is a loose cough which she can't get rid of.

 A: Does she have mucus?

 MP: No.

A: Can you hear her swallow mucus?

MP: Not really. She starts weeping immediately.

A: Does she perspire at night?

MP: Yes, at night she is very warm and perspires on the face.

 A: Only on the face?

MP: I think also on the rest of the body, but it is immediately absorbed. When I touch her she doesn't feel wet.

A: We can say that she has a chronic cough especially at night.

 MP: Yes.

A: How is it during the day?

MP: She again has difficulties falling asleep. When I put her down she tosses and turns. It is as if there is something wrong with her. When I give her the breast she falls asleep better. One hour later she is coughing again.

A: Does she still startle when you put her down?

 MP: No, that is over.

A: Does it have something to do with dentition?

MP: In fact not, because she eats well. It is strange that before you don't see anything on her gums, there is no swelling or anything, and suddenly there is a tooth.

 A: Is she thirsty?

MP: She is always very thirsty. She drinks a lot of water.

 A: Does she drink milk?

MP: No, she doesn't want the bottle, only the breast.

A: Does she have teeth only above?

MP: Above four and below two.

A: Does she grind her teeth?

 MP: No.

A: I just heard her coughing.

MP: Yes, but she has a heavy cough. She is coughing like an old man who has severe bronchitis.

 A: Like a coalminer.

 MP: Yes.

A: In what position does she sleep?

MP: Now she sleeps on her back.

 A: Is she anxious?

 MP: No.

A: Also not for certain animals?

MP: No. I can distract her with animals.

 (The child is coughing)

MP: Let's state it this way, during the day it is rather good with the cough, but at night she has severe fits of coughing.

A: During the day the cough is loose and at night it is dry.

 MP: Yes.

A: Then she wakes up from it?

 MP: Yes.

 A: A cold?

 MP: Yes, watery.

 A: Did she have discharge?

MP: A few weeks ago she did, but not now anymore. She also has purulent eyes. Now they are bloodshot.

A: In the history we see that your grandfather had silicosis (lung fibrosis caused by the inhalation of dust containing silica. ). Before he was a coalminer. Did he die from that?

MP: Yes, the lungs were very bad.

A: Did he also have tuberculosis?

MP: Yes, the tuberculosis appeared together with the silicosis and was treated.

A: Does the child eat well?

MP: Yes, when I give her something she likes.

A: Is she fastidious in eating?

MP: Yes, she has always been very difficult. When she doesn't like something she clenches her mouth and you cannot put a single piece into her mouth.

A: Are there a lot of things she doesn't like?

MP: She is too little yet.

A: You don't know her desires?

MP: No. The only thing I know is that she likes sweet things a lot. She prefers warm food. I give it to her twice a day at the moment.

A: When do I see your other daughter again?

MP: She is still coughing, but less. I hope she doesn't have to come anymore.

A: I would like to see the child after 10 days. Does she like going away with you?

MP: Yes, a lot. When she is sitting in the car she is very peaceful and she sits very quietly. Otherwise she is always very restless.

 Now it becomes difficult.

Surely she is Sepia officinalis constitutionally, the icterus disappeared, during dentition she needed Borax veneta in an acute state and now she has been coughing for one month. I repeated Sepia officinalis, without any reaction.

Do you see a symptom which indicates another remedy? A particular symptom?

 Audience: No.

 Audience: Desires sweets.

A : 150 remedies have this symptom. You cannot prescribe a remedy upon the symptom, "desires sweets".

There is not one clear symptom.

Remark: ... (not understandable) ..., that the child only does what it wants and it is worse in the afternoon than in the morning. This symptom is .... (not understandable).

A : Yes, when a child has really clear psychological symptoms you can take them, but when this is so the mother will say it spontaneously, as she told us about the anxiety when putting her down and the anxiety from opening a door. But you cannot prescribe a remedy upon these symptoms.

What do we have to give her now?

 Audience: Tuberculinum bovinum Kent.

A : Good, Tuberculinum bovinum Kent.

In 30, 40 % of all the children you can see that first you give them the right constitutional remedy, for an acute state, diarrhea or anything else,  you give another remedy and then suddenly they start coughing. Coughing, coughing, coughing, you give a remedy, nothing, you give another remedy, also nothing. Tuberculinum bovinum Kent can imitate every remedy.

When there has been tuberculosis in the family, especially in the grandparents, one day you will have to give Tuberculinum bovinum Kent. Therefore you always have to ask about tuberculosis in the family history. Often you cannot repertorize Tuberculinum bovinum Kent. If you cannot find the remedy for a chronic cough then you should have the reflex to think of Tuberculinum bovinum Kent.

I gave her Tuberculinum bovinum Kent M and I repeated it a few days later.

Question: If there wasn't any tuberculosis in the family would you have given Tuberculinum bovinum Kent? Or is it a remedy which you generally often use in children with cough?

A : Yes, I give it very often. Tuberculinum bovinum Kent is the second most frequent remedy we give after Sulphur. The longer you treat the children, the more often you have to give Tuberculinum bovinum Kent.

Question: Why did you repeat Tuberculinum bovinum Kent after a few days?

A : It was better, but not good enough; I mean, there was a slight relapse. Therefore I repeated it.

Remark: I don't think you can talk about a relapse four days after you gave the remedy.

A: No? When the symptoms become worse this is a relapse and I repeat the remedy.

 FEEDBACK (May 16, 1990)

A: Tell me, how did it go?

MP: You can see the result. She has much better skin color. Before she had such a withered, pale color to the face. She doesn't have purulent eyes anymore, her nose isn't running anymore....

A: Not too quickly, I'm not a computer. I must write it down ....

 MP: That's right.

 A: What about the cough?

 MP: It is over.

A: I must add that I gave the remedy on June 4. Then I talked to you here in the waiting room in between. The cough improved, but she had a relapse. I repeated the remedy on June 13, so three days ago.

It was not four days, but 8 or 9 days. I gave her the remedy on June 4, then she improved for 8 or 9 days and then she had a slight relapse. Therefore I repeated the remedy.

MP: The first time I had to give the remedy rather frequently.  I gave her the remedy three days in a row. The cough was really very bad, I waited too long. Then she was a little bit better and then she had a relapse. Then I gave her another three spoonfuls.

A: When she had this relapse?

MP: I waited another two days and then I repeated the remedy.

A: How long did it last before she was better?

MP: Within one day she was again her old self.

 A: Afterwards she did well.

MP: I gave her three spoonfuls in three days and the next night she almost slept the night through.

 A: Fever?

MP: She doesn't have fever nor purulent eyes anymore.

 A: Did she have fever?

MP: She had an increased temperature, but not what you could call fever. About 37° - 38° C. I didn't measure it. The cold has gone. She didn't have the real heavy fits of cough. Now she also has good color. Everybody says that she has been outside a lot, but this is not the case. This is her normal color. She is difficult to control. Sometimes it is really exhausting with her.

A: But she reacts very well. Although before she didn't react to Sepia officinalis. Sometimes it is strange, that children need this remedy when there was tuberculosis in the family.

MP: She doesn't need a lot of sleep.

A: Doesn't she sleep the night through?

MP: No. She eats too little during the day and then she is hungry at night.

 A: Do you still breast-feed?

MP: Yes, in the evening she wants the breast. In the evening she looks for me, but when she doesn't see me, she eats something else. But then she eats too little and she wakes up at night. After 1 1/2 hours sleep she is very vivid and refreshed.

I'm curious whether she will need Sepia officinalis again after a period of time, whether she will develop again a Sepia officinalis disease. If this is so it would be very interesting and I'm really sure about that.

I already told you with Tuberculinum bovinum Kent patients that these are patients who will go to the hospital with bronchopneumonia. Normally they have very high fever and everything starts with an influenza, an influenza with sore pain in the muscles. This is the typical onset of a Tuberculinum bovinum Kent influenza.

If somebody says that he has a sinusitis or bronchitis a few times a year and every sinusitis or bronchitis starts in this way, with sore pain in the muscles and cold shiverings, then you have to think of Tuberculinum bovinum Kent.

CASE13

Dd ign., tub.

 Case

 Woman, 35 years old

 March 22, 1988

This is a patient with recurrent bronchitis which developed into bronchopneumonia. She is the mother of the osteogenesis imperfecta child and has been in treatment for a longer period.

She was seen by a colleague for this bronchitis because I was not in the Center at that time. It was on March 19, 1987. She was coughing and all her muscles hurt, she couldn't lie down quietly.

Which rubric can you take for this? Cough, sore pain all over, has to be in motion constantly?

 Audience: Pain, sore, motion amel.

A : Yes, in the generalities on page 1385:

amel. : Caust., pyrog., rhus-t., tub.

  Generalities, Pain, sore, motion amel.

At that time she also said, "I would rather cry than laugh", so she was sad, melancholic. Cold shiverings alternating with perspiration, cough worse on lying down and in the evening in bed, after midnight.  Also she was wearing make-up.

Why did the colleague write this down?

Because he was thinking of Sulphur, but here he made a mistake. Her make-up is appropriate, Sulphur make-up is exaggerated. There is too much lipstick, the black is too black, the blue too blue and so on. You can already smell them at a distance and you are afraid to touch them because you could dirty your hands. This is Sulphur, but in this patient the make-up is not exaggerated.

She came with an acute disease and my colleague thought it should be a complementary remedy to Sulphur. Because the cough was worse on lying and in the evening in bed, she had fear of heights, vertigo and was chilly, what remedy did he give her, which is complementary to Sulphur?

 Audience: Rhus toxicodendron.

A : Rhus toxicodendron complementary to Sulphur?

No. Rhus toxicodendron is complementary to Calcarea carbonica.

 Audience: Nux vomica.

A : Yes, it could have been Nux vomica, but he gave Arsenicum. This was on March 19, 1987 and on March 23 she came back and everything had become worse. The pain in the muscles had become worse and she had diarrhea when she drank something. She had had this diarrhea only three days, she woke up from pain in the abdomen and pain in her back at 3:00 a.m.  and she couldn't sleep anymore. My colleague gave her Sulphur, because Arsenicum didn't help and he thought that the so-called constitutional remedy probably would help. But it didn't act either and she went to the hospital with pneumonia.

You see that after the wrong remedy new symptoms appeared. She had among other symptoms cough and diarrhea, this means that we are dealing with a remedy which can provoke symptoms in different places. This remedy is one of the most important in chronic diarrhea.

Anyway she had to be hospitalized in a Bryonia-like state, this means with diarrhea, thirst, paleness, cough and so on.

One year later, on March 9, 1988 she came back with a cough similar to the one the year before. This time I could give her the right remedy, because I knew the picture and we will see it now.

A : You were here on March 9, 14 days ago. At that time you had a severe cough. When did the cough start?

P : It might have started one month ago. Before I was also coughing, but less.

 A : But you didn't come?

P : No. I called you, but you weren't here.

A : Then you saw the family doctor.

 P : Yes.

A : And then you took antibiotics. How long did you take them?

 P : Only a few days, because I didn't tolerate them. After 2 or 3 days I got diarrhea.

A : You took it two or three days?

 P : Yes.

A : But the cough continued until you came here?

 P : Yes.

A : It was about February, March, and strangely enough you had been seen last year by a colleague for a cough. All your muscles hurt, you couldn't lie still, would rather cry than laugh, had cold shiverings alternating with perspiration and you turned up the heat. The cough was worse on lying in bed in the evening. At that time you wore a lot of make-up, that was an observation.

 P : I don't know anymore.

A : Your hands perspired, thirst was normal. At that time you had a desire for warm drinks, perspired from coughing and here it says fear of heights.

I forgot to tell you this: desire warm drinks is also Arsenicum, Arsenicum is one of the most important remedies in acute states.

A : At that time my colleague was thinking of the constitutional remedy Sulphur and gave Arsenicum acutely. No effect. Four days later you came back and you felt badly. You were coughing a lot, but the pain in the muscles was better. Diarrhea after drinking. You woke up at three o'clock in the morning and you couldn't fall asleep again, pain in the back and you were thirsty the whole day.

All these symptoms indicate Bryonia: diarrhea from motion, thirst and so on.

A : At that time you received Sulphur and you had to be hospitalized. I saw you afterwards and thought, this could have been an acute Bryonia state. You suffered from a severe lung inflammation. In May you had a relapse. Then you said, "I have a cold again." This was about two months after you were dismissed from the hospital. You started coughing again. It seemed to be one of the remaining problems. This happened in 1987. The last time, one year later, I examined the whole case again.

Last year I made a mistake: I saw her in May 1987 and I gave her the remedy. She came back in 1988 with the same symptoms.

A : Besides the cough you had a lot of pain in the muscles.

 P : Usually I have.

A : The cough went along with the pain in the muscles, but you don't have pain in your muscles all over, sometimes here, sometimes there. Do you remember? Describe it.

P : One day I had pain in my legs, then in my back, sometimes in my arms, so that I couldn't even comb my hair.

A : During the cough you feel very badly in general. Coughing and pain in the muscles, and it is remarkable that the pain is first here, then there. That's what you told me at the time. That is strange.

It seems that the pain is not always in the same place. A remedy which is warm in general, but cold in acute states, with wandering pain is which remedy?

Pulsatilla. But other remedies also have this wandering pain. Look on page 1046:

wandering shifting : Acon., agar., Am-m., arn., ars., asaf., bapt., bell., bry., calc-p., Carb-s., caul., caust., cedr., cham., chin-a., cinnb., colch., coloc., form., ign., kali-bi., kali-n., Kali-s., kalm., Lac-c., lact-ac., laur., lyc., mag-p., merc-i-r., merl., mosch., nat-a., nat-s., nux-m., nux-v., phyt.,plb., Puls., rhod., sabin., sars., sep., still., sulph., tarent., tub., valer., verat-v.

EXTREMITIES, Pain, wandering shifting: ... tub ...

Here you see Tuberculinum second degree, and there is a very important addition, namely Thuja.

A : I also asked whether you were afraid of anything and you answered ... Tell me again, what is your behavior towards animals?

P : I like animals a lot, but I don't want to have any at home.

 A : Why not?

P : I don't know. Dogs frighten me. Now we have a very big dog at home because our daughter loves animals a lot. Of course I'm not afraid of this dog, but when I see a dog on the street I would rather go another way.

A : Are you afraid of mice?

 P : Yes.

A : Are you disgusted by animals?

 P : Yes.

A : What do you mean?

P : My child has a little bird and when I'm preparing dinner I can't stand it when it flies around. I'm disgusted. I would never let it land on my hand.

A : So disgusted by animals. What about other animals? Are you also disgusted by other animals? For example, cats?

P : I can touch them. My mother has a cat, but I would never touch it.

She is disgusted by animals, she can't tolerate them at all, and in Tuberculinum we also see an allergy to animals.

Do you know which remedy likes animals most? More than people? Someone who loves animals more after they have learned to know people?

Aethusa. And which is the first question you have to ask when you think of Aethusa? Aethusa is a constitutional remedy, so that there already may have been symptoms during childhood.

 Audience: Vomiting milk.

A : Yes, vomiting milk. And what is this vomiting like? What is the milk like they vomit?

 Audience: Like cheese.

A : Curdled, the milk is curdled.

We had patients in the Center for whom we couldn't find the remedy by repertorisation. All the anxieties of Aethusa are not in the Repertory. The essence is that they love animals excessively. They have three, four cats and two, three dogs and they buy them good food to eat, instead of buying good things for their partner or themselves. Their refrigerator is full of cat and dog food. These people have been very much disappointed in their life.

A : Usually you go on holiday with your son. Do you like that?

P : Very much. At first, I thought I couldn't go on holiday this year and I was very sad. Then I went away at least one week in between. I need to go somewhere else, I need to travel.

A : Everybody likes to go on holiday for one week in between. Are you always at home during the week?

P : No, I work two half days a week.

A : What interests you in traveling? Do you like to travel?

P : I want to be myself for one week, at home it is impossible. I'm not really myself. My husband laughs at me when I say that I want to be myself. To be able to do what I want to do, what I want without paying attention to whether I may or not. My husband likes to be at home, and I try to adapt myself lately because he doesn't like to go away, but it's not good for me. After a while I withdraw myself and if I want to go away I quarrel with my husband. I'm very unhappy and that's the reason why I want to go away.

Her husband is a Natrum muriaticum man, a very serious, hard working man. These men like to stay at home with their family, their children, like Kali bichromicum also. Natrum muriaticum also doesn't like so much visit, he wants to have his wife to himself. On the other hand it is important for her to go away, she likes to dance, she likes to go out, but because her husband is Natrum muriaticum she can't. He is jealous when she goes dancing. She can't do what she wants; she wants to live, therefore she goes to Lourdes with her sick child, not to pray, but to go out, to be away from home. She wants to be herself, she wants to do what she likes. Desire to travel.

You know the Nomads from North Africa who always travel around with their tents. This is a prominent Tuberculinum symptom.

Remark: Also the Romans and the Sinti in Europe, the gypsies.

A : Yes, it is the same with the gypsies. Also Calcarea phosphorica has this, but it is sufficient for them to drive around with their bicycle. In the morning they take their bicycle, they go for a ride and they come home in the afternoon. Tuberculinum has to go further, has to travel around the world with their rucksack on their back.

A : In the past did you like to travel?

 P : Yes, but I didn't drive anywhere.

A : Now you could travel for three weeks just like that?

 P : Yes, easily.

A : Without thinking of home?

 P : Yes.

A : You like to travel?

 P : Yes, very much.

This is the situation she is living in. If these people don't have the possibility to go out they become ill.

You could also say that she was suppressed, but it is not the kind of suppression that we know, for example, from Staphisagria, it is more a kind of, "Give me space to live."

Her husband doesn't give her this space, she cannot live the way she needs to and therefore she becomes ill, she gets this cough.

A : Can you occupy yourself a long time with the same thing or do you need diversity?

 P : Yes, I want diversity.

A : Your character is a little bit like your pain, wandering.

P : I like diversity. I like it very much. To sit at home all week long is not for me. It's boring for me. The winter lasted too long for me.

A : Is this also at work? To do the same work for a long time is not for you?

 P : No.

Don't forget the changeability of the Tuberculinum character. Tuberculinum can be very soft, very sensitive and on the other hand very harsh.

Boericke describes them as contradictory. The characteristics of Tuberculinum are mania and melancholy, sleeplessness and shyness. The states are like their pain, wandering, but they also alternate. We often forget Tuberculinum in cases of psychological disease. Sometimes they are very, very sensitive, even in the sense of Medorrhinum, so that you could mix up Tuberculinum and Medorrhinum.

A : So clearly you need variety. The cough went along with a lot of perspiration on the forehead. At that time did you perspire without any cause?

P : Yes, I started perspiring just like that. I still have that.

A : Tell me something about the perspiration. What kind of perspiration is it?

P : It appears suddenly, usually on my face, on my forehead.

A : Are you warm then?

 P : No, I just perspire.

 A : On the face?

 P : Yes.

A : Does it alternate with cold shivering?

 P : No, only perspiration.

A : Also when doing nothing?

 P : Yes.

 A : During the day?

P : Yes. I never had it at night. I don't perspire at night.

A : Your food desires are also a little bit strange.

 P : I don't know.

A : They are strange. Tell me, what do you like to eat?

P : Lots of sour things.

A : Here it says that you liked pudding a lot among other things.

P : Yes, sometimes also sweet things.

 A : What about drinking?

 P : Fruit juice, lemonade. Actually I don't drink a lot.

A : Do you like milk?

 P : I seldom drink it.

A : And if you drink milk how do you like it?

 P : Not warm.

A : So cold. Do you drink cold milk from the refrigerator?

 P : It happens.

A : Do you like it a lot?

P : If there is nothing else, I like to drink it.

A : What kind of meat do you like to eat?

 P : Beefsteak.

A : Do you prefer this? You don't like pork so much.

P : Well yes, I eat that also.

A : Here it says you like bacon.

 P : Yes.

A : Can there be fat?

 P : Yes.

 A : A rim of fat?

 P : Yes.

The differential diagnosis with Pulsatilla is not so easy. Pulsatilla also likes bacon, because bacon is somewhat salty and spicy, but the bacon has to be fried, so that the fat is gone. In Pulsatilla there can be no fat, but well spiced, with pepper and salt, they like that. In Tuberculinum the bacon doesn't have to be fried well, they also like the fat.

That's how you could confuse it with Pulsatilla, when they say that they like bacon.

A : Do you like that?

P : Yes. I used to eat it a lot, but not now.

A : Do you like ground meat or sausages?

 P : No, I don't like it anymore.

Summarizing, the following can be said about this case:

Sore feeling in the extremities with frost and heat, better by motion, wandering pain, diarrhea after antibiotics, desire to travel, anxiety, disgusted by animals, yearly periodicity and her brother's son has tuberculosis.

A : On May 12 I gave you the remedy in 10M potency. It developed beautifully. On March 9 I repeated the remedy in 10M potency. You also had a dizzy feeling after waiting.

P : Yes, when I had to wait.

A : When you had to wait at the cash desk.

P : Yes, I started to get excited and I became dizzy.

A : Also while coughing you had vertigo. At that time you took tablets for your blood pressure. I had them stopped.

 P : Yes, I haven't taken them anymore.

A : What kind of tablets were they?

 P : I can't remember.

A : Why did you get tablets for the blood pressure?

P : At that time the family doctor was treating me for a cough. He took the blood pressure and it was 190/110. That's why I got those tablets.

A : Then you came here and were talking about vertigo and you said, "I take tablets for my blood pressure." I took your blood pressure and you had 120/80. I had the tablets stopped. How high is the blood pressure at the moment?

 P : 140/80.

A : So normal. At that time you were coughing when you went to bed until you had to vomit. How did you react to the tablet on March 9? What happened to your cough and the pain in the muscles?

P : The cough completely disappeared.

A : In how much time?

P : It went away quickly, after about five days.

 A : Completely gone?

 P : Yes.

A : Has the pain also disappeared?

P : Yes, everything is gone.

A : So the complaints for which you came have completely disappeared?

P : Yes, they are gone.

A : It is remarkable that they seem to come back every year about this time. This is strange, there is a periodicity of about 1 year. It is one year ago tomorrow that you were hospitalized. This is strange. If you don't take care of such a state it is not surprising that you end up in a Bryonia state.

It was a Bryonia-like state, not really a Bryonia state. Bryonia didn't touch the case at all. It was a Tuberculinum state.

A : Your brother's son had a certain disease. Hasn't he been in a sanitarium?

 P : Not that I know.

 A : He had tuberculosis.

P : Yes, tuberculosis of the glands.

A : There is no other case of tuberculosis in your family?

 P : No.

A : Not in your parents or grandparents?

 P : No.

 A : All right.

This was the problem at that time, and now comes a new one. A few months later she came with the same kind of cough and I repeated Tuberculinum, but this time it didn't act at all. She called me, I had her come and recorded the case once again.

 FEEDBACK (December 9, 1988)

A : Since 1986 you have had a cough and have been cured with Tuberculinum. In May 1987 you were hospitalized for pneumonia. In March 1988 you were coughing again. The problem was solved with Tuberculinum. You came back in November for a cough, and it hasn't disappeared since then.

Yes, this is the problem and here we have to be flexible, here we have to take off our blinders and recognize that everything is dynamic, that everybody can be influenced by his surroundings.

A : The reasons you received Tuberculinum were that your cough always started with an influenza feeling all over, all your joints hurt and when you were moving it was better. You had fear of dogs and you liked to travel. Your youngest son has osteogenesis imperfecta and he is doing well at the moment.

 P : Yes, really.

A : In the past he was always sick and now you haven't been here with him for 2 years. He has been in treatment since 1983, hasn't he?

P : Yes, it might be.

A : Back to you: chronic cough, desire for pudding, cold milk, fat, bacon, pork, meat, desire to travel, wandering pain all over, also in the muscles, first here, then there. "Extremities, pain sore during chill." This was the main rubric. You had diarrhea when you took antibiotics - Tuberculinum has to be added here -, disgusted by dogs, periodicity of one year. Your brother's son had tuberculosis.

Now you came back, "I'm coughing day and night, especially when I go to bed, when I lie down." You were coughing day and night, but when you lay down it was unbearable. Also when lying in bed alone. Nobody could lie next to you. Many people start coughing when somebody they can't stand is lying next to them.

P : No, that was not the reason.

A : You went to work every day and you said that you lost four kilos in one month. You also said, "I go to work in order to be occupied."

P : Actually that was the reason, but now I like to work. I enjoy it very much.

 A : Since when?

P : About seven weeks. I'm tired when I come home, but my husband thinks that I strain every nerve.

A : How many hours a day do you work?

P : It is different; sometimes four, sometimes six, sometimes eight hours.

A : Why did you go to work?

P : Because I'm always alone. My husband is working day and night.

A : Your child with the osteogenesis imperfecta stays at school in the Netherlands. Is this a very good school?

P : Yes, the social care is very good in Holland. The eldest also goes to work, and usually he works in the evenings.

I would like to draw your attention once again to the appearance of the patient. She is wearing make-up, but not in an exaggerated way like Sulphur. The make-up is appropriate.

A : You are always alone.

P : Yes, the last year I have always been alone.

A : And that is the reason why you started working?

P : Yes, that is the main reason. Before I went to work two half days a week. Actually that was enough for me in order to be busy, but I was alone too much.

A : You were alone too much?

P : In the summer it was all right, but I was afraid of the winter. When it becomes dark outside I don't dare to go out anymore.

A : And now? When it is dark you are still working?

P : Yes, I am, but they bring me home by car.

A : When do you come back?

 P : It varies. Sometimes I work from 10:00 a.m.  until 4:00 p.m. , sometimes from 4:00 p.m.  until 11:00 p.m.

A : What has changed in your life what makes you so unhappy? Because you felt very unhappy, didn't you?

P : Yes, I became very unhappy. I felt forsaken. I was only a servant for everybody at home.

A : When you came here the first time with your youngest son he was always with you. You had to take care of him the whole day. Now he is at school in the Netherlands and there is this emptiness.

P : But he has been at school already for eight years. This can't be the reason. In the beginning I suffered from it, but not anymore.

A : Then your daughter started working. Could this be the reason?

P : Last year she started studying and was living in a student home. She was also gone and actually it started then.

A : And you didn't have anything with your husband?

P : No, he is never at home. He only lives to work. Really. And when I say something ...

A : How is the relationship with your husband?

P : At the moment very bad.

People like her husband, and also Aurum people, who don't do anything else but work create Ignatia states in other people. They work, work, work and don't pay attention to their wife, and the result is: Ignatia.

A : Do you suffer from this?

P : Yes, I suffer a lot. Before I would get upset about this, and cry or scream, but I don't do that anymore. Today I cried twice without any reason. Why?

 A : Before you couldn't cry?

P : No. I already told you. The last few years I couldn't cry or express myself. I told my mother about this a few times, but otherwise ... I felt everything passed over me. I was very sad when I sat at home in the evening, but I never told anybody about it.

She feels forsaken and at the same time she closes herself and doesn't tell anybody. This goes more in the direction of Ignatia, but it could also be Pulsatilla. Why not? Forsaken feeling. We have to look further to see whether it is Pulsatilla or not.

 A : Sad?

P : Yes, very unhappy. I sat down and got some video films, but actually it isn't that

 A : Grief?

P : Yes, I'm not used to that. In the past I could be hot-tempered towards my husband, but it has been a long time since I was like that.

A : How many months ago did it change?

 P : A long time ago.

A : For how many months haven't you cried?

P : I can't remember, but a very long time ago, and otherwise I cry very easily.

A : Today you cried twice?

P : Yes, without any reason.

In one way it is the same as in the woman with the ovarian tumor and the impaired hearing. What she suffers from doesn't touch her anymore, she lets it go over her. Now she cried twice, but this was after the remedy.

A : You could work very well?

 P : Yes.

A : And you were coughing less?

P : Yes. The last time I was here I was coughing constantly.

A : It's difficult to describe, but once you started coughing you had to go on coughing. You couldn't stop coughing.

P : It was tickling and I had to cough.

A : I asked you an impudent question, whether you were in love?

P : No, otherwise I would have told you.

A : It happened once in the past, but it was purely platonic.

P : Fortunately you helped me to get over it.

When she went with her son to Lourdes she fell in love with a 19 year old boy and she couldn't put him out of her mind. This is typical for this remedy: they fall in love with somebody and they can't put the picture of the man or the woman out of their mind. They just can't get rid of it.

A : You said, "It will never happen again."

P : Yes, I was very unhappy at that time, I admit it.

A : So that you had to stop it?

 P : I couldn't hurt my husband.

A : You forbade it yourself.

 P : Yes.

She reproaches herself, another essential point of the remedy.

 A : A human being doesn't make himself.

 P : I understood at that time.

A : You told me something else, "I perspire only on the face", and then I understood.

She was coughing, and once she started coughing she couldn't stop. This is which rubric?

 Look on page 794:

COUGH, Irritation, increases the more one coughs: ... Ign ...

 Ignatia is capital.

Secondly she perspired a lot, but only on her face. Look in the Repertory on page 391:

  FACE, Perspiration, face only: Ign

There is only one remedy in this rubric: Ignatia.

The cause of the cough was a grief, not a sudden grief, but a continuous grief with her husband. You see how difficult it is sometimes to differentiate Ignatia and Natrum muriaticum.

P : I have fewer problems with it at the moment.

A : Another thing was that you smoked a lot. You also sighed a lot. This was an expression of your internal pain, of the silent grief. This sighing was an expression of your feelings. At that time I underlined this symptom three times, it was very prominent with you. You didn't notice yourself that you were sighing a lot. Now you don't do it anymore.

 P : Did I sigh here?

A : Yes, I wrote it down. The cough is clearly better now. Actually today, so three days after the remedy. Yesterday morning you said on the telephone that it wasn't better and so I had you come today. But the cough is clearly better now.

P : When I got up I had a terrible attack of coughing so that I thought I would vomit. This afternoon I noticed that I have used my handkerchief much less and I'm coughing much less.

A : We are on the right track. You cried twice, the perspiration is clearly less, the cough is better and you look very well. We are satisfied. Call me again whenever there is something wrong.

 Question: I didn't quite understand ... also a relapse ...

A : No, she was only coughing, there was no fever and no pain in the muscles. Maybe I said she had the same symptoms, but that was not right, she only had the symptom of the cough.

Always try to find out why somebody gets symptoms. There are so many remedies of which we understand only a few, most of them we don't understand in depth. I'm sure that after 10, 20 years if we work together and pass on our knowledge we will understand the reasons for the diseases better and you will see that every disease starts on the emotional level, sometimes even in newborn children. I do not talk about hereditary problems. Anyway you must always try to find out why symptoms appear and how the remedy works, which is the psychological background of every remedy, but this is a task for all of us.

Question: ... diarrhea after antibiotics ...

A : Yes, Tuberculinum is one of the remedies for diarrhea after antibiotics, together with Nitricum acidum.

 Question: ... (not understandable)

A : No, no, this is from Vithoulkas. He told me this. He mentioned both remedies.

EXTRA

- You tried all kinds of remedies, but the cough develops to a pneumonia on which side?

 - On the left side and then the patient has to be hospitalised.

 - That is the Tuberculinum case.

- Tuberculinum sleeps on the abdomen, like Medorrhinum, Lycopodium, Sulphur and so on.

Which is the first examination you have to do, when you want to prescribe Tuberculinum ? Where do you have to feel ? You have to feel here, both sides of the neck. Tuberculinum children have always 99 % chronical glands here, sometimes thick, sometimes thin, but you can always feel glands. In Tuberculinum you always have to look at the back, they have very much hair on their back, and when they take off their clothes, you see a narrow chest, they have a very narrow chest - and you see the rips.

Up to now we have a lot of symptoms which indicate Tuberculinum bovinum Kent: anxiety for animals, better at the sea, desire for hacked (ground) meat, this kind of ground meat and so on. Tuberculinum bovinum Kent seems to be too lazy to chew.

This is the son of a pilot. His father had tuberculosis and his son is delicate in his food. Desires delicacies, Tuberculinum bovinum Kent is capital.

Now we are in a difficult position. Is this a Tuberculinum bovinum Kent or a Sepia officinalis case?

But blue sclerae, anxiety about animals, he likes meat which he doesn't have to chew, he is lazy, these are all Tuberculinum bovinum Kent symptoms.
